self serving

Post by crazylegs32 »

Now that Kenny hasnt been regulating Ive seen alot of self serving. Like 3-6 self serves per person over and over.
Is self serving still considered a no-no? Does anybody else notice it the way I do?

In the very isolated scene that is Australia, it depends what city you're in. Dunno about the rest of the world though.

I think it's generally a non-issue these days. Some people do it and others don't and nobody makes a big deal about it. I tend to mainly not self serve, but especially when you're playing with a group of people who do and also don't give passbacks, which seems like all the circles I play in :P it seems far better to just start self serving as well, rather than either making any conflict out of it, or just continuing to play in the same manner but getting resentful every time you don't get a passback - especially I recall at Aus champs this year the person before me dropping, I picked up the bag and passed it on rather than self serving and didn't get a passback. I'm sure being in that situation many times would be annoying (I laughed and started self serving from that point on I think).

It seems to me that the self-serve rule is there as more of an ettiquette thing than an actual rule. I think its a sound principal to follow though and one i will encourage, but not enforce. Personally, If i recieve a serve, i do my thing, and then when I drop, I pass on. If i only get one kick out of it though, or its a poor serve, then yes, ill self-serve.

Again, I think its more a rule of ettiquette to prevent sack-hoggers

i wish it was upheld more often.

upholding the no-self-serve & the passback rules cause all the players in the circle to pay attention to each other, as opposed to developing an inward mentality that is supported by self serving over time.

but it's probably not a enough of a concern to make a big deal about it. if i find myself in a circle that is heavily self-serving, i treat it more as a training circle than a real circle & take the opportunity to try out some weaker concepts knowing that self serving is alright under the circumstances.

for me it still depends on how well i know the people in the circle, but generally I will try a single trick up to 3 times or will self serve once if I drop a string like 2-3 tricks in.

some people I have played with will self serve once and then still seem to expect a rebate, that gets confusing.

i also don't enjoy playing with players who will self serve up to 5-6 times.. even if the 6 self serves take less time than one good string, it seems to slow the circle down more.

Abstract made a good point about people paying attention to each others play. I do tend to zone out from what someone was doing if they are self serving alot. Also the rebates- There shouldnt be any expectation of a rebate. No Scott D. stares forcing people to give the bag back LOL.
Myself, when I drop 95% of the time I pass. And if you think I deserve another shot then rebate me. I dont even like it when people ask if I want it back because its not up to me IMO.

Way back in the day My Mom bought me my first hackeysack (neon orange/green) the first rule in the instructions was either no self serves or dont say sorry. :D

That's basically how I think about it.

To me a sack hogger is someone capable of 20 contacts, who drops after 3+ contacts and then self serves or gives a weird rebate stare. Or if you drop and self serve on 2/3 of your turns you are burnt- you suck at footbag and need to take up soccer :D

In my circle you get the look of death from the regulars if you self serve, so the common etiquette there is its still a no-no

I wish this was an issue in New Orleans. I am one of two shredders in the city and since I usually play alone, I do self serve.
When Im in a circle though, as long as there are only two or three people, then self serves are ok.

I keep myself under a two drop count. If I drop within the first 2 contacts of my first string, I feel that I'm obligated to self-serve to correct myself and rework the string more comfortably. If it doesn't work on the second go-around, I let it pass. However, if I have a pretty decent string where I drop after a pretty consistent amount of contacts, I let it pass as well. It depends on the situation.

I feel that if you're in a cricle that is more oriented to hard tricking, though, you're obligated for more self-serves/pass-backs. But even then, I still try to keep it at 2-3 (4 only in the instance that I'm REALLY feeling that I can hit it right there and then).

And if you can keep it to a minimum, it doesn't hurt to ask the person that's following you for a pass-back, or the person that precedes you if they want a pass-back.

It really depends on the skill level of the players, and the size of the circle. At Worlds on Finals night we had to deal with five and six man circles, and everybody was Open level, so we said no passbacks.

If there is an intermediate in the circle, I think it's reasonable to allow some self-serving, as long as they are aware that there is a flow to the circle, and they shouldn't take more time than other people's turns.

For me personally, most times I play I'll use Circle comp rules. If I drop the first real trick, I'll self-serve. If I drop after a few contacts I'll pass it on.

In the olden days self serving was more of an issue than it is today.

I doubt anybody is going to run into your circle and take the bag away from you if you self serve.
