Setting

Post by Green Lanturn »

Does anyone practice just setting the bag or is setting something that you gain consistency by just drilling the tricks? I've noticed that the success of many of my tricks really depends on the set. For example, if the bag is set too far away or too close to my body, or if it is set too low or too high, I have trouble recovering. So I find myself just practicing setting the bag to get it just where I need it and drilling the sets over and over. I was just wondering if anyone else ever drilled setting when they first started.

Setting seems to be almost as important as the trick itself... as a mismanaged set will cause you to flail or compensate your normal body motion which leads to poor form...

Practicing set after set after set is perfectly acceptable

You're right, sets are very important and should be practiced. Sets can only be practiced after a stall, though, and the best way to improve your set is to improve your stall form.

I presume you're talking about toe sets, so here's a brief explanation of proper toe form:

As the bag is falling, let your support leg sink at the knee without moving your stalling leg at all. Toe stalls require very little cushion. Your stalling foot should be with toes curled and pointed upwards (like if you were stretching your calf muscle) to form a pocket. When the bag lands in this pocket, just use your already spring-loaded support leg (and your stalling foot) to push straight up. Some people make semi-circles with the bag as they set, like me, but in the beginning it is much harder to set that way.

I suggest making a video, because if you're drilling sets it's not going to help if you're doing the stall the wrong way.

I remember, after I stalled, I closed my eyes, and placed my hand in a cup shape where I wanted the footbag end up. This helped me get very accurate sets.
