Tentative New Orleans Footbag Event - November 5-7, 2010

I'm planing a footbag event in New Orleans during the first weekend in November. I have a small venue for freestyle available (with a possible expansion) and a few possible net sites picked out. I am planning to award an overall trophy as well, so to facilitate all events I plan to have net during the day and freestyle in the evening, into the night. Everyone will be able to compete in all events.

Certain events:
singles net
doubles net
freestyle routines
freestyle 30 second shred
ironman

Possible events:
golf
two square
circle contest
5 minute timed consecutives

Every event would rank all competitors numerically from first to last. The product (as in multiplication) of all of a player's rankings would be his or her score for the event. The three lowest scores will receive trophies.

My questions to you:
1. Would you come?
2. Would you compete in all events (of course you wouldn't have to.)
3. Umm, any other thoughts? Like, what else do I need to know as a first time event planner?
4. Oh, if you have nets, could you bring one or two? I only have one.
5. What should I call the event?

1. Maybe, depending on work and scheduling. What's the weather like in NO at that time? Is the freestyle venue indoors?
2. Depends on who else is there. If all net competitors are open, I'd skip net because it'd be a waste for everybody if I played.

I'm interested. I wanna come. If you build it I will come.

I will compete, but, not in Net or Golf (with the exception of competing in Iron Man) I like the idea of Timed Consecutives. I've always liked the event, but its been a decade since I've gotten to actually compete in it. (Its pretty brutal actually -- harder than it sounds -- kills your legs).

I also like the idea of the Time Aloft. Sounds like a fun little side event.

My recommendations for a first-time event planner:

1. Don't over-do it -- that is, don't schedule too much for you to have to organize, leave yourself time to play and enjoy by making the event relatively simple.

2. Enlist help -- get some other people to take full responsibility for certain important arrangements, like making somebody capable to be fully in charge of having music arranged (equiptment, power, a schedule/plan for when music is needed, for example, background music during some events, and specific music for the competitor's performances.)

3. Have only one round of 30-Second-Shred, on the first day (or the 2nd of three days), so that the shred can be scored over-night. Its poor planning to have to do the the time-consuming task of actually SCORING the shred contest by video review on the fiinal day of the event before you need to announce results, and, in my opinion, because the event is not scored subjectively, you only really need ONE round of this event.

And, lastly, and most specific to you and your event, make sure your players get out and see whats really cool about NEW ORLEANS. I'm sure you know what to do, but, my suggestions run to seeing WHO IS PLAYING WHERE in the evenings and scheduling things to allow people to go out and see Rebirth at the Maple Leaf, or something cool like that.

My suggestions to anybody else reading this topic -- NEW ORLEANS IS AN AWESOME CITY -- EVERYBODY SHOULD CONSIDER COMING TO THIS EVENT BECAUSE ITS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE NEW ORLEANS AND HAVE SOME FUN (that is, have fun doing things besides just playing footbag, though, of course, footbag is also a good way to have fun.)
