Let's Reaminate Modified!

Post by F[uns]tylin' Eclectic »

Post here if you're with me and want to get back into the modified groove or get into it for the first time!

Please don't let facebook.com be completely in control of our sport. That is messed up. We need our own place of congregation back and it's RIGHT here on Modified.

Lets see this forum fill with life again like it was a handful of years ago!

I agree.

I used to go to Modified multiple times a day, but that was waaaay back. I suppose a forum was more crucial to us years ago when there was no youtube and facebook. I still prefer a forum over a facebook group any day, but yeah....what can you do?

Perhaps an update...or even simply a new template would spark the initial interest for coming back, who knows. Restructuring would also be welcome. Like how there are too many sub-forums. It is unrelated, but I believe this one is a good example http://forums.sonicretro.org/

Forum is dead coz we have no any young talented players, who could be add fresh breath for forum, we need new wave of unique players, but we haven't it. Few years ago it was contest, contest of any records, fearless links and etc.. Super killers vids every week in video topic, beastly combos in other topics, but wave of players who did it is dead. :(

I like this idea, as it is always nice to have a community meeting place. Although, there is already LOTS of info on these forums for people to see, just not much of an active community.

I'm still on modified at least once a day. I don't keep my footblog up or anything because I don't kick enough to really have much new stuff, but I still always check here to see if there are new videos and I like the Discussion section, which has been dead for a while too. I like discussing non-footbag stuff with people who are brought together with the commonality of footbag :D

I think a lot of this stuff comes and goes in waves. There are still clearly some dedicated players and enthusiasts who are on here posting regularly to keep the site alive. You never know when a new rush of interest will hit or what will spark it.

I'm more active in the past year than I ever was when I first signed up. And I'm a weird anomaly in that I'm not particularly good at the sport, I've just been into it and around for long enough to be an old timer (I mean, I still have several issues of Footbag World Magazine, as well as a couple issues of the "other" footbag publication -- yeah, at one point there was another one -- and I also still have my first pair of footbag shoes: LeCoq Sportifs), and I'm genuinely interested in how the sport is evolving and the community. But most people just want to shred and hit cool stuff (which is okay by me - cause then I get to see the videos!).

Maybe an idea would be to encourage everyone make at least one post every day that they log on — so you don't have people just silently stalking. It doesn't have to be a huge diatribe or lengthy response, just a quick post. That ups the activity level on modified and would provide that many more posts to react and respond to, which could potentially have an avalanche affect. And, one post any time you log on isn't asking that much of people, so it seems reasonably easy and not overwhelming. Plus, this is a pretty involved community that likes to respond to things, so if someone who normally doesn't actually post, makes a comment and has some reaction, then they get a whole new modified experience.

I like it. Even quick comments on videos/blog posts make the OP happy in my experience.

if it has come to the point where we need to ask people to post, then we know that the end is near hahahaha

I still check unread posts every day. Most of the topics I don't bother to reply to, because most of the discussion is nothing new. I still send private messages sometimes.

Many of these arguments to why the use of Modified is declining are hilarious. Then again I couldn't say why Modified should be used instead of Facebook. What the sport needs is people who actually shred and get better at footbag. If they get their motivation from the Internet the exact source isn't important.

Awesome! Glad people are responding pretty positively to my post! I am so down with that idea of a post a day, to bring it back to life. Some of my students recently signed up and they are getting good quick. I think we should also work as a team to try to recruit new players. I probably make some absurd long post about that too later on :P

Information can be found relatively easy on a forum...facebook is just a mess.
Also, hope that Modified mods make backup copies from time to time.

Forums are still a widely used resource on the internet. A facebook group is just a slow chat room. Of course forcing people to post won't work, but when I want news or information or videos or just to catch up I expect to do it here, and it should be the go to place for footbag. I admit to having dropped off the charts for a few years now, many other active posters have simply lost interest in footbag. Is it just a north american thing?
I also admit that after having been around for so long I no longer have the urge to debate technical aspects of the sport as I used to. But I sure as heck like following people's footblogs, checking in on new vids and tourney information.
Anyway, let's just do our best to keep things rolling.

There's certainly no way you can force people to post. But just throwing that out there as a suggestion - see if it becomes kind of a "Modified Grass Roots Movement" to get people posting.

I think a lot of the technical discussions regarding footbag have been discussed to death on the forums, so if someone relatively new pops up and asks a question, they'll usually get directed to a previous thread where the issue was debated and argued. Which gives them great insight, but certainly doesn't spur ongoing conversation. And, of course, the oldtimers don't mind that because ... really ... nobody wants to discuss the shortfalls of the ADD system, whether Paradox should really be an ADD, is X-dex an ADD, what the hell is X-dex, what's the deal with self serves, how come all you guys wear that stupid shoe, or any of that stuff any more. We just want to play.

Honestly, what's exciting me the most about footbag right now is the effort a lot of the players are putting into promoting the sport in a very professional manner and spreading the word. But, again, that is not of any interest to a new player who just wants hints on hitting a move, or wants to see some sick video for inspiration. And making videos is a time-consuming process that not everyone is capable or interested in doing.

This was a rambling post with no real point except to say that there are a lot of roadblocks to getting new members actively involved, and there are a lot of reasons oldtimers don't post a lot. One post every time you log on will increase activity, but if nobody really latches on and keeps conversations going, it won't result in a lot. Of course, even the illusion of activity may get more people interested!

Also, can Nick or an Admin change the title of the thread from "Reaminate" to "Reanimate?" "Reaminate" sounds like a machine is going to ream us on modified, which is horrifying.
