Jiawei's footblog

Post by Jiawei »

Hi, this is my first post on my footblog. I started footbag during May 2014. Before that, I had been plactising freestyle football since October 2012. For the past week, I have been working on my clipper style. Today, I did around 5 butterflies same foot with both legs and around 10 alternating butterflies. I did not train swirl today but I landed it a few times already. I started trying ripwalk but for the last clipper part, I kept hitting instead of stalling. It means that I am still too slow in my dexes. I have tried whirl a few times already but it is still like the ripwalk, I keep hitting the bag. I started training outisde tricks since yesterday. I do do other ticks like atw, legovers and mirages. I have never trained illusions before. Sorry if I got any terms or names wrong because I am still pretty new to the sport. Btw, I use rod lavers. I hope to be able to post here often :D

My training schedule - I can't train on Mondays and Fridays due to after school activities (CCA).

welcome to freestyle "footbag"! i'm pretty sure your football techniques will transfer over well to the bag. we have a few around here that do both. khoa nguyen is one of them.

upload some video of your progress so we can check it out!

I decided to try ducking osis and managed to get it. I landed diving clipper - ducking clipper - 5 alternating butterflies. I realised the my right leg butterflies doesn't set straight so I am working on them now. I did swirl in my first 5 tries. I don't use the roll method when I do swirl. I also did my first ducking butterfly. I managed to beat my mirage record today. I am still learning ripwalk.

I went to a freestyle football meeting today but I managed to find time to do footbag.

Today, I finally managed to do rip walk. Whenever I end with the clipper, my hand would crank too. I tried to make it normal and I managed to land it.

I finally did whirl today too. What I have been doing wrong was that after the dex, my clipper leg still has not come up yet. So what I did today was to lift my clipper foot up earlier while I am dexing.

I'm not sure how to write this but I will try. I landed Clipper - dex(out) - far clipper.

I also landed 2 consecutive ducking clipper and 3 rakes. I can still land swirl but I am still not consistent at it.

I did not get a chance to film anything yet but I will try tomorrow. Thanks for the replies, they are really encouraging :)

Thanks, I am from Singapore. A few years back, there was a footbag competition here. I hadn't started then though. Some of those who started footbag because of the competition were interested and even had accounts on footbag.org. However, now they seem to be all gone and have quit already. I hope to find some of them around  .

Great stuff. I went to Malaysia for the same event, the one sponsored by Adidas. I hope to visit that part of the world again, hopefully by next year. Would love to have a kick

I realised that my right leg clipper still has some style problems so I am working on it. For today, I concluded that my right foot had to move slightly forward without changing the position of knee and that I should bend down a little more so that my clipper surface is flat.

30th July 2014
I still worked on style. Today I concluded that my right foot had to crank more and the clipper leg knee should be diagonally behind my supporting leg knee. I filmed the trick for the funny trick competition also.

31st july 2014
I trained on style and other tricks today. I kept trying Datw but I am not close to landing it. I found out that I was doing a outside butterfly instead of a whirl so I worked on that. Managed to get it a few times. I studied my clipper style longer and I came out with this. I naturally have one clipper side that the support foot turns turns much more. I did not like the turning of the foot last time so I went to make it not turn but when I reviewed my videos it looked awkward. I also realised that my other clipper side also has a little turn. I realised from the start that my inside stalls were different. For my right leg, the feet is close to the standing leg and the knee sort of juts out. That is the clipper side that my support foot turns much more. While for my left leg, the feet is further away and it reaches "out" so the knee does not jut out. I did everything but the style still does not seem right so I am experimenting using the turn but have yet to review it. This is not an advice but just something that I wanted to record down somewhere. This is likely not accurate and is prone to further changes. If you have any advice, it would be gladly appreciated :D

1st August
I did not have much time to train but I managed to land datw barefoot. It is either because I used barefoot, or because I used a stally bag yesterday and a round bag today.

Hey dude, just a few things I noticed about your video above that will really help you:

Try to stay off your heel and on your toes. I saw that the Ducking Osis was ended with you coming up on your heel. That is bad for your legs and bad for form, in general. Try to do Ducking Osis and all other tricks by just standing on your toes. Much easier that way and also it will look cleaner.

Your Pdx Mirages and Infinities (Far Butterflies) in the video.. You plant your feet twice during each in the video... Try to do both tricks with no plant. We call this no plant style "muted". So try some Muted Infinities and Muted Pdx Mirages.

Your game is really looking great right now. Also, I loved your funny trick submission!!!! :D

Keep it up man. You're going to be very very good if you keep progressing like this.

10th September 2014
Since my last post, I hadn't train much tricks because I am still working on my right leg clipper and on freestyle football. I decided to try 2 dex tricks today after being motivated by watching Anz footbag videos. I managed to do Datw and another similar trick that I don't know the name. The first dex is a legover and the next is an Atw. I also landed my first barfly. In previous sessions, I did 2 whirls and 5+ mirages.

Nice job man. Your second trick sounds a lot like a Double Switchover, maybe?

This trick:

I hope you keep playing footbag, as well as football. You have a lot of footbag potential.

Double Legover is something else. DLO is a mirage dex with one leg, then a legover with the other.
