Re: Thanks for your Ideas from a Community College Student

Dear Mr. Colclough,
Read your letter with much interest. Glad you found the talk interesting. I've written quite a lot about these topics for over 20 years, since the Reagan administration declared its "War on Terror" in 1981. Quite a few books and many articles. I have in fact written extensively on the media also, including several books specifically on the media (Manufacturing Consent, with Edward Herman, for one).
The idea that there is no "immediate way to implement change" may be correct, but it is worth noting that it's a peculiarly American view -- or more accurately, one common among people like us, who enjoy unusual freedom and privilege, and are not used to committing ourselves to the painstaking hard dedicated work that does bring about change, including significant change, but not quickly. This country is far more civilized than it was 40 years ago, in just about every dimension, because a lot of people, most of them young, were willing to devote themselves to these efforts. There simply isn't any quick easy way, and never has been.
I do like music -- conservative tastes though; run out in about the 1930s, mostly.

Noam Chomsky
I guess that's a yes.
My dad- a writer with similar political views- has written back and forth with him a few times. He says Chomsky's always open to thoughtful, public communication, which I think is pretty cool, considering he is somewhat of a legend (though he probably doesn't appreciate such a label).
Thanks for sharing.
