David's Worlds Adventures

Post by david »

I don’t have a blog and I didn’t feel like starting one just for the sake of writing this somewhere, so I figured id start my own thread about my trip to worlds, what happened there, and all my highlights. I’m going to make this pretty long and thorough, because I know I like it when people write a lot and I have stuff to read, so I figured I might give something back. So here goes.

My world’s adventure started on Friday the…. Arg, like 21st or something. At around 7 or so my parents drove me to long island New York (I live in Pennsylvania). Long Island is like a 2 hour drive away so I got there around 9 and met up with my friend Alex Strassman who lives there. We went out to dinner with my folks, discussed worlds and all, and by the end of the night I and Alex were pretty stoked about worlds and what was going to start tomorrow. Fast forward to Saturday morning at 4:00 a.m. We woke up and it frikken sucked waking up the early, but we had to leave. So we go downstairs, get all our shit together and James Geraci comes and picks us up. We throw all our stuff in the trunk and were off. 45 minutes later we are at jfk airport. We were there to pick up mike Hansen who is wolfpacc on this forum. It was cheaper for him to fly into New York and get a ride up then to fly straight to Montréal, so we were glad to help him out. We traveled for a bout 2 hours, and stopped for breakfast. While we stopped mike and I kicked around and impressed some people who were eating and stuff. I got a bagel and we were back in the car. We played stupid games for like 7 hours until we got there. We made up this one where you had to come up with a trick and everyone else had to try to guess what it was. This is how it went: say I would think of… nemesis. Everyone would go around asking questions like “does it start on clip?” yes or no questions like that. It was pretty fun for a while, but when we got into this like warp and slicing mirage, it got really hard. So we all listened to music and talked and stuff. We got into Montréal at about 12 or 1. What sucked was we had no idea where the hotel was or anything. We walked the streets for a while and met up with nick laroche randomly. He said stuff was going down around 6 at le place des arts. So we hung around until then, kicked at the art place, and then we ended up meeting up with Steve Goldberg and ales. That was really cool. We walked with them downtown, and then I saw Vasek and Honza right in the middle of the street. I was so stoked. All of us (by this time it was me, Alex, James, mike, ales, Vasek, honza, Dexter, Ellis, Andrew Coleman, Steve Goldberg) went down to this pier and started shredding. We got kicked out, but moved farther down the street and shredded there. What happened then I kind of forget. I remember watching fireworks with Vasek and everyone, and then shredding in the dark in some lighted tunnel with the Nova Scotia crew. That night we slept at tom mosher’s sister’s house (thanks tom!). Day 1 complete!

Day 2: woke up at moshers. Went to a restaurant, grabbed some food, and then went to the tam tam jam. Everyone was there, it was sick. I met ken Somolinos, and all these other shredders. Everyone kicked like, all day. It was really cool. I met Derek vandal and hood and so many people. The vibe at the tam tam was sick. I played really well that day and was really happy. Then we went back to the hotel and checked in. We were in a sweet ass room. It was a multi 8. It was myself, Scott Bevier, Alex, James, Crisco, outsider, Jack Keller, Andrew Ivanyo, Josh Benham, Stan Sagalofsky. Phatty. I slept on the floor with an air mattress and everyone else had beds. The room was really sweet. That night I forget what I did, I think I just shredded and hung out with people. A sweet Sunday at worlds!

Day 3: woke up around lunch time. I went outside and shredded it up with some guys. I met Juan Rangel (taco!) and Eric Reile! Arg!!!! So many people. I can’t even remember everyone I met. Loren Baum is so cool! Anyway. That day at 3 we went to big shred 1 at place des arts. This was phat. Everyone kicked for like 5 hours. Then I had my first orange Julius. That was really good. I think that night I had 99 cents pizza and hung out and went to bed early. I wish I could like, recall everything but its sucks because all the days blend together. Ok, so let’s just say I went to bed!

Day 4: (Tuesday). Woke up, had some cereal. Then we went to big shred 2, which was at the same place. Another like 5 hours of shred. This was the day with the kick ass Vasek circle where he was hitting crazy stuff. That was a good day for shred. That night I went out with the New Jersey guys. This is where I made the best memories of worlds. Check this out. We went out to pizza and then we went down the street and were just like “man, we should kick”. 20 minutes later we were shredding our asses off and had like 100 people watching us. No lie; it was such a sweet vibe. We made like 12 bucks, and ended up getting kicked out for stopping traffic. Street performing rocks. Totally recommended to everyone. Bed at like 1 Am

Day 5: Wednesday! I had to wake up so damn early that day. Like 10 o clock. Arg. I went to the rialto theater thing with the NJ crew and starting warming up for routines. It was so damn dark in that theater. I was in pool 4 and competed at like 1 o clock. I dropped like 4 times but made it to finals. A little summary of intermediate 1st round: all the Japanese guys owned. Alex strassman had a really nice routine. Chris kovacks tore it up. Masa had a really good routine. John Haber hit like whirling swirl mid routine. Okkkk later that night was pro first round. That was really cool. I watched like 4 hours of routines. It was done at like 2 am or something. I went out to pizza with some guys, and got to bed at like 4 a.m. I was sore that day so I really didn’t shred much.

Day 6: Thursday! Finals! We did our routines and shit. I got through with 2 drops. Masas routine was really cool. I ended up winning, Chris got second, that was cool... my shred 30 was really bad. Kovacks won shred 30. Semi finals for pros were that day. Jeer linnanens semi final was amazing. I loved it. We shredded at the theatre till like… 2 a.m. Oh shit, earlier that morning we had a sick session. It was me, Juan, Andrew grant, and Nate linscott. That session owned. That was a lot of fun. I got back at the hotel at like 3 a.m. Then I shredded till 5 in the morning. I went to bed as the sun came up. That was crazy.

Day 7: Friday! Woot! Wtf, I don’t remember what I did that day at all. I went to the internet café with qphox… that was cool. I shredded somewhere, idk where though. Anyway, the dopest thing that day was poker. Check this out. We played Texas hold em. It was eric Windsor, ripping Rick Reese, big add Chad, Daryl genz, his wife sunny, Juan Rangel, Sunil jani, and Paul munger. It was so much fun. I ended up winning and made 50 bucks. Yay! Idk what I did for the rest of that night. Oh, if you’re thinking “why didn’t this kid go to any bars?” Its cuz I'm 16 and couldn’t get into any of them cuz the age is 18 there, and plus everyone said they card and stuff and it was fun chilling at the hotel anyway. That night I hung out with the Nova Scotia crew. Cole Hobson is the coolest kid, I really like him. We messed around in the room juggling and talked about all this random stuff. They had like 6 people in one room, it was gross. That night I got locked out of my room, so I had to sleep on the couch in mike anellos room. That was really fun (not the couch, the room). Ryan Thomas and Paul Wackerow were blowing up these heresy milk juice boxes and blowing them up. At 3 in the morning. They made such a loud sound it was insane. I thought we were going to get kicked at. I fell asleep at like 4 and woke up at 9. No one in my room noticed I was gone I think lol. They were all asleep, but jack let me in at 9 (he always wakes up early). Shit, I just went into Saturday!

Day 8: Saturday! Ok, what’d I do today? I think I kicked; I went to a bistro with hacky Richard and Andrew weglarz and got lunch… I did laundry with some guys. That was fun. I hung around till like 5. Then me, Steve Goldberg, vandal, grant, and like 5 other guys went to dairy queen. That was cool. Then we caught the bus over to the theatre for finals night. That was cool. We watched all the routines and had a blast. There were a lot of people! We hung out till like 4 in the morning. I shredded a bit on the stage with some people that was cool. I like playing with red and Caleb. Bed!

Day 9: Sunday. Woke up really late, like 2. Hung out, went to the tam tam jam that was sweet. Then at night we went to the awards cer5emony. What sucked was that since like, half of the people were under 18 no one could get into the bar where the awards were! So everyone trekked over to this park and we had it there. People got inducted into the hall of fame like Peter Irish and he made a really good speech. It made me realize how sweet footbag is and how much I love the community and stuff. It really made me remember that it doesn’t matter if you’re Vasek or if you’re some newb, your welcome in footbag and everyone is super nice to you. That was sweet. Then we had the awards and bap inductions were held. I was really stoked Jordan and jere got in, they totally earned it. I remember doing street with Derek that night. He hit ps whirl down like 4 stairs. That was so sick. I hit smear down like 3, and hop over swirl and stuff. It was around that time where I got really down. It kind of set in that worlds was over and that the week went by really fast. It sucked saying goodbye to everyone. It just made me want to keep playing and see everyone next year, even though I probably won’t go to Finland. On the way home from the park we bought all this candy and shit. That was phat. Went to bed at like 3. Packed up all my shit 

Day 10: Monday. I woke up to “hey Dave I’m going to pee on your face!” Whoever said that will remain nameless lol. We got all our shit together, ate some pizza, and were outty. It was only me James and Alex and the way home. We got a little lost, and customs was a bitch, and we got back to New York at like 9. Then I had another 2 hours to go back to Pennsylvania. I got home at like 11. And then worlds was over. Just like that.

Here are some highlights that I don’t know where they would fit but they should be said.
- shredding with the NJ guys in the middle of the street was sick
- The circle with me, Derek, Chris, bob glasser, and hood was so good, all those guys rock.
- Going to dairy queen and making tons of jokes about “that’s what she said”.
- Kicking with Felix at like 5 in the morning.
- Hitting 3 new 6’s in front of Connor and Ricky.
- Winning intermediate routines.
- Kicking with Vasek.
- Playing poker with like 9 bappers.
- Having lunch with Caleb, brad, and Juan.
- 99 cents pizza runs at like 3 in the morning.
- Scrabble with ken, Jon, and Stan.
- Meeting everyone from modified who are all really cool.
- Shredding under a street lamp with Justin dale, brad nelson, Jordan moir, and Adam Keith. That session frikken rocked, it was so much fun.
- Meeting Loren Baum who ive talked to online since I started.

Some random props to people who rock: Jordan Moir – he really rips it up, sick job. Felix Zenger – he’s really nice and can do some sick shit. Barefoot cheese processor on his foot! YUCK! Juan Rangel – one of the coolest guys ever. Caleb Abraham – shredding it up and hanging out with me. Loren Baum – cool dude. Ken – really nice and really funny. Derek Vandal – he’s just so chill and fun to hang around with, he shreds it up like hell too. Jere L. – damn, he has such a solid game. Cole Hobson – cool guy and I know he’s going to be awesome soon. Johnny Murphy – super nice, super sick. Vasek – really insane shit, and really fun to kick with. Steve Goldberg – for routine advice and keeping an eye out for me. La Resistance – sweet tournament.

I probably forgot a lot of people and a lot of things that happened. Worlds rocked, and it just confirmed my love for footbag anymore. Footbag rocks, and so does everyone who plays it. I really want to go to Finland next year and see everyone again. Thanks to everyone who came, and everyone who shredded with me.

Peace,

Expect to see mine within a week. I kept an online journal while there (no internet connection), and just need to wait for a friend to e-mail it to me from his laptop that we took. Mad props to Dave!

Yes, thank you for writing this David. It really does give everyone who never went to Worlds (or anyone who has never ever been at a footbag gathering  ) a real good insight as to what all goes down.

Thank you :)

Hey Dave, thats an awesome recap of your events. Congrats on winning Intermediate, I was there to see it but never got the chance to congradulate you in person.

Worlds has given me some new insight into the ins and outs of footbag, and I will be shredding harder every day to take your title in Finland!

j/k. Good Job all around David.

Thanks for writing. Congrats again. Wish I had been there. Btw, that idea for the game sounds fun. I'll have to try that sometime.
