Ever been picked on for footbagging?
Have any of you guys ever been jacked with, hollared at, or otherwise discriminated against for kicking?
I have at least a few times. I usually play at Fry street, which is where all the bars and stuff are in denton right by the university. Theres this tattoo parlor across the way and always these loser ass tattoo'd drop out looking guys standing in front of it smoking cigarettes and caressing each others mohawks. I faintly heard one or two of the dumber ones saying something like 'damn faggot hacky sackers' or something to that effect.
Once in highschool i was kicking and this kid was watching from 10-20 feet away. I dropped it kinda in his direction and as I was going to pick it up and right before I get to it he bends down to pick it up whilst muttering some volitile words about stealing it...i put my foot on his hand (he was in the process of getting it off the ground) and put all my weight on his knuckles against the ground and kinda mashed em arround a little bit. He was utterly shocked and ran off shaking his hand and crying. I think I broke his hand.
I must say Ive had waaaay more positive experiences from it. People walking by always stop and check it out and are all "wow thats awesome!" Now that I started freestyling poeple are like "holy shit! Whats he doing! WOW!" Feels good...

Ok, I'm a bit confused. You start off talking about negative experiences and then you say this. Do you think this is good for the image of footbag? For a "hacky-sacker" to be stomping on someone's foot? Use some common sense.sandman420 wrote: Once in highschool i was kicking and this kid was watching from 10-20 feet away. negative. He picked it up whilst muttering "mine now loser" i think its safe to say he wasnt trying to be nice.
I think the reason most footbaggers get jacked with is cause its thought of as a hippy sport and Ive recently found out that the main population doesnt like hippies at all. Which is sad, considering they are the nicest and most thoughtful people arround.

I had a girl try and pick me up yesterday. Does that count as picking on?

Seriously there are always the odd haggler. I always find it gives me more energy and I always play better. Nothing shuts up a haggler like busting a 30 contact run with 7 or 8 big moves in it.
I think it's hard for some people to accept new things easily. I never get called a hippy and I don't think any of the haggling has anything to do with hippy hate. Even though I am more of a hippy in many ways than most people - I think it would be hard to call a circle of very athletic looking people doing some really athletic stuff in short running shorts and listening to some hardcore techno or trance hippies. I don't think we look anything like hippies. Perhaps your appearance effects the way people react to you. I think it's very important to be happy with your appearance and some of that means being happy with people's reactions to it.
I used to have the attitude that I didn't care what people thought of my appearance so long as I was happy with it - but I think to some degree these days I am more happy with my appearance if other people are too! These days I think that my view isn't any better than anybody elses - and that goes with appearance too - part of appearance is how it makes people feel. Ultimatly I don't really care about appearances at all - but I do care about my relationships with people and about promoting the sport - so I make an effort to look "cool" rather than nerdy or like a hippy - which is perhaps what my appearance used to be like.
I think if people see you playing and you have a cool or trendy image they are more likely to have a postive reaction. People who don't judge you on your appearance will still think your cool and people who do judge on appearance will also think you're cool - I think this would reduce the amount of haggling you receive a lot!
But dress in the way that feels best for you - that's definitly the most important thing I think!

I actually had a pretty cool thing happen a while ago that I just remembered, me and my friend where just messing around footbagging, I think I tried a handspring start, at this amusement park. It was dark and the lighting was good so we where doing really bad. There where a ton of people and this girl's little brother got in our way and we dropped it and she was like, "good job they where on like a world record or something and now you've messed them up." So I would have to say that I've gotten more complements then complaints about footbagging...

Not really. Ive had ppl say shit because they heard I practice on my own. This was when we hacked in high school though and to most of the ppl there hacking was a pass time. They didnt really know about freestyle footbag.
One time kicking in town, this guy saw me kicking with some mates. He didnt even say anything to us the pussy. He walks pass us and starts dancing around - thing is he looked more stupid doing that.

At my school I play trumpet in the band, and after practice everyday (or before) Im always out side the band door or in the hall shredding with a couple of guys. About once a week Smitty (Mr. Smith(the band director)) comes out and gives us a bunch of crap about how we are tearing up the place and how we could get hurt. Now I need to get a picture of this guy... but hes this big black man and he dosent really talk he juts mumbles like the hillbilly guy in the waterboy. Well he comes out and I quote,"uuhh, gimme that there...uhhh hackin sack boy or I I I will uhh have to givea you a detention..." So we just kinda looked at him and handed it over and got it later.

At my college we are only 3 shredders, and we are still at a low level (5-10 contact runs average) 2 or 3 add moves
Most people who react to us are always supporting
once in a while someone who does'nt know anything about the sport will say i look like an idiot, but i don't care about it, the important thing is i enjoy and love the sport that i practice

In So-Cal we get "pier rats" who constantly ask us stupid questions on purpose,.. Some jerks will like try and mimic us but make it look all shitty, like shadow hackin without the bag.. Sometimes there are dudes who ride through the circle on skateboards... Nobody strait up disses or makes threats in L.A., or Sandiego, by saying faggot or stealing our stuff... If they did they would get madly bombed on
. Just hold your own...
