Impulse Tracker

I've been told by a semi-creditable source that this program is awesome. Anyone care to comment on it, or suggest other free software thats good?

Impulse Tracker is an awesome program, but it's DOS based. It'll probably run in Windows, but it's ugly and a bit hard to learn. Still a great program though.

I liked ModPlug Tracker the few times I used it.

If you're looking for a good, high-quality program for loops and some songs, FruityLoops is really awesome. FruityTracks is it's song-creation equivalent. I highly suggest FruityLoops, as it's exceedingly easy to use and very powerful. FruityLoops is not free though, but there is a demo version available. (or you can pir8 it)

There are several other free trackers out there too.

modarchive.com is awesome, if you haven't been there already.

yeah, any tracker will give you more control than FruityLoops, but control comes at a price: ease of use. IT is frickin' hard to learn. The easiest tracker to learn IMHO is ModPlug Tracker, and it's quite powerful too, maybe as much as impulse tracker, because it supports most of the features IT does (if not all). ModPlug player is the best mod player I think too... Gives tons of nifty features like bass expansion. Mods just sound better when you play them with ModPlug.
