A while back I was schooling while listening to some hip hop because that was someone's preference. I couldn't focus and didn't play too well because my mind was on the music instead. After a while we switched to classical and I played much better. My mind was free to think and I was more aware of how I was playing. I like how classical sorta melts into the background and doesn't demand my attention. If you're just shredding and having fun it doesn't really matter, but classical might be better if you're working on something.
Does anyone else have a problem thinking clearly with hip hop/rap/rock/techno etc?

That's pretty interesting. I remember before when I used to listen to my mother's collection of older bands (Nazeretth, BTO, Dire Straights and The Beatles) I felt a lot more mellowed out and my sessions usually turned out to be better.
I'll have to unpack my stereo and try it some more. Listening to classical (Mozart) while doing work seemingly helps students learn, so perhaps it also can be associated to footbag?

No matter what music is playing while I freestyle, it affects how I shred. Not necessarily the level of play, but the moves I choose, the rhythm I choose, the tricks and style I use. Classical is great, although some of it feels stuffy and self absorbed. If it sounds emotive and beautiful, and not too prim and proper (think of the theme from Masterpiece Theatre), it's my kind of classical. I remember at this past ECFC, someone blasted some beautiful classical music from their car. it was pretty slow, and a little somber, but still very powerful. I was kicking with Peter, and he commented on how epic he thought it sounded.
I think I'll put on some classical when I play today.

I play really really really badly to classical music. I don't know why - I like listening to some classical music (or at least that style - I'm more into baroque - and not because of the footbag move).
I play really well to fast techno/dance/electronic type music. - The type of music makes a huge difference to how well I play. It doesn't matter what I'm trying to do - be it consective clippers or trying to hit a 30 move shuffle combo.

Classical music rocks, but only a minority of it is any good for freestyle. I'm in to baroque music too, mostly Bach and Scarlatti and only their keyboard works (on the piano only, harpsichords suck). Some of the Classical period stuff is OK, Hadyn mostly and some Beethoven. I'm not much of a Mozart fan with or with out a footbag. There is some cool Romantic period shit. I've been thinking about doing some sort of long form routine to Chopin's G minor ballade or something similar. Something with a lot of rubato and a wide range of dynamics. But as far as just to shred to I would probably most often pick something more modern. I've discovered some early 20th century Spanish composers that are fun to kick too. Falla, Grenados, Albeniz, Mompou. And Russian music can work. Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Shostakovich in particular. From France Ravel and Debussy are my favorites.
Usually I kick to jazz, but that is another subject and would take me all day to list my favorites.

Wow. I always listen to rap when I shred. You guys must have crap rap with no flow or something. Classical to blah for me. Has no substance to move too.
I think I going to take over Canada. You should help.
