The Islam Religion
Now I know just the topic name alone is gona cause people to go into shock, but i thought it might be appropriate to examine another religion besides christianity, since christianity is bashed, smashed and trashed on this forum to the point of hate.
So here are the questions I'd like to ask:
1) Does Islam promise peace?
2) Do you believe it to be good or bad?
3) Do you believe it is BETTER religion to be involved in then christianity or a WORSE religion?
And Please dont bash one side or the other, it's just a discussion.

1) Does Islam promise peace? The religion does not promise peace but demands peaceful actions from those who follow it.
2) Do you believe it to be good or bad? Religion is not good nor is it bad. It is seen as whatever its followers present it to be. There are "good" miuslims and there are "bad" muslims, and by that I mean people who either closely follow the guidance of Islam's principles and those who interpret the principles to benefit their own situations.
3) Do you believe it is BETTER religion to be involved in then christianity or a WORSE religion?
I personally, think most christians are brainwashed, as are most people who are religious. I also happen to think most Muslims are also brainwashed, so in this regard, I find all religions to be on equal standing. A good person will be a "good" Jew, a "good" Muslim, or a "good" Christian. It is not the religion but the person that determines innate righteousness.
I did a little searching, about 10 minutes or so, typing into google the phrase "Islam principles" and I found this:

you can visit the site or reads the text that follows:
Islamic Principles are Based on Humanism and Non-Violence
The Divine religion of Islam is a religion of mercy, kindness and benevolence. In fact, Islam is against brutality, violence and viciousness. Allah, the Almighty, urged all Muslims to follow the pattern of Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Allah, the Almighty, states in the Glorious Quran addressing Mohammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as in Sura Al-Imran, [The Family of Imran] 3:159, which reads as follows:“ It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them. Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs of moment). Then, when thou hast taken a decision, put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him)”.
The teachings of Islam exhort upon every Muslim to show mercy, and kindness to every gullible and poor person. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ The merciful and kind people would get the Mercy of the Merciful Lord, Allah, the Almighty. Be merciful to those [people] on earth, and Allah, the Almighty, Who is in Heaven, would grant you [His] Mercy” (This Hadith is reported by Tirmithee).
Furthermore, Islam requires that mercy and kind treatment should be meted out to all people, including the fighting enemies of Muslims. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ Be kind and merciful to the captives” (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabeer [The Grand Dictionary of Hadith] 22:393). If thus was the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) command to Muslims concerning the enemies who are fighting against them, what would be the treatment towards the peaceful people? Islamic mercy is not limited to human being only. Rather, it covers also to animals as well. In fact, several reports confirm the blessed reward for individuals who are kind to animals in general, and suffering animals in particular. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ While a man was on a trip [in the wilderness], he felt very thirsty. He searched for water, and found a well. He managed to go to the bottom of the well in order to get to the water, as he had no equipment to reach the water from the surface. He suffered a great deal to reach to the bottom of the well. The man managed to quench his thirst and came out of the well. Upon reaching the surface he noticed a dog with his tongue stretched out because of severe thirst and inability to reach the water at the bottom of the well. The man thought to himself, Surely, this dog is suffering the same hardship I suffered because of severe thirst. Thus, the man went down the well again, with a great difficulty, and holding one of his shoes by his teeth, filled the shoe with water and brought it back up to the thirsty dog. The dog drank and went away. Allah, the Almighty, appreciated the action of this man and forgave his entire previous sins. One of the audience, who heard the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) inquired, O Messenger of Allah! Would we be rewarded for being kind and merciful to animals? Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asserted, truly, there is a blessed reward for being kind and merciful to every living creature that has a wet liver [i.e. alive animal]” (This Hadith is reported by Bukhari).
In fact, a woman deserved the penalty and the wrath of Allah, the Almighty, and was to become one of the dwellers of the Fire of Hell, as a result of her cruelty to a cat. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ A woman would become a dweller of the Fire of Hell, as a result of ill and cruel treatment of a cat. The woman locked the cat up and tied her. She did not offer proper food for the cat, and neither let it fetch for her own food in the surrounding” (This Hadith is reported by both, Bukhari and Muslim).
The list of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commands to Muslims to be kind, merciful, and kindhearted even to animals is endless. We only cited above few examples. Some other examples are as under:
* Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, while passing by a donkey that was tattooed on his face, “ May Allah's Curse descends on the person who placed this tattoo on the face of the donkey” (This Hadith is reported by Muslim). Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have passed by a group of young men from the tribe of Quraish who set up a bird as a shooting target. They were shooting their arrows on that bird, as a target. Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired, 'Who placed this bird as a shooting target? May Allah's Curse descend on the person who did. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ Allah, the Almighty, curses the person who sets any living creature as a shooting target aiming to shoot it” (This Hadith is reported by both, Bukhari and Muslim).
* Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said while passing by a camel who appeared to be extremely thin of hunger, “ Be mindful and honor the Commandments of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) concerning these animals, which can't express its needs by speech. Ride them while they are in good shape. Eat them while they are also in good shape” (This Hadith is reported by Abu Dawood).
* Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commands Muslims to show kindness in every action, even at slaughtering an animal. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, which reads as follows:“ Allah, the Almighty, prescribes perfection in every action. If you kill, be perfect in your killing. If you slaughter an animal for meat, perfect your act of slaughtering. Sharpen your knife and be good, kind, and merciful to the animal you are about to slaughter. Give the slaughtered animal the best comfort you can while being slaughtered” (This Hadith is reported by Muslim).
* Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have said, on noticing someone shooting, for fun, a little bird, and leaving it to die for no reason, “ This little bird would argue, before Allah, the Almighty, on the Day of Judgment, O My Lord! This man killed me for no reason of benefit to him” (This Hadith is reported by Ahmad and Nasaiee).
If such was the mercy and kindness to animals and living creatures, what about the human being, who is given full preference, honor and respect over all other creatures? Allah, the Almighty, states in the Glorious Quran, Sura Isra [The Night Journey] 17:70, which reads as follows:“ We have honored the sons of Adam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things good and pure; and conferred on them special favors, above a great part of Our Creation”.

Understanding Islam by Thomas Lippman gives a good overview of muslim society past and present, history, culture, and religion. The Essential Koran is a collection of the most valued pieces from the Koran.
The teachings are basically the same as chrisitanity. The Koran is the continuation of the Christian and Jewish scriptures, incorporating their teachings to bring the people of Arabia an enlightenment previously accorded only to Jews and Christians.

Islam is no different from any other mainstream religion with regards to promoting peace, being 'good' or 'bad', etc. What I mean is that people always interpret their religions based on what they choose to believe, and often use it to justify their own bigotry, abuses, and sometimes killing. Surely an Islamic terrorist and the average Middle Eastern person practice entirely different religions from each other. The same thing goes with a member of the KKK, or a neocon Christian fundamentalist, or a genocidal Zionist-- when compared to many other Christians or Jews.
In my own opinion, the sooner mankind is rid of religion the better off we'll be. The concept of God and all that is stuff for cavemen. That said, I have no problem with people practicing their own religion, as long as they don't negatively interfere with the lives of others. So I don't believe that Islam is any better or worse than Christianity, as long people follow their beliefs while respecting others.

so do the other major religions, war is a product of humanity, they look for excuses, usually those that are looking for excuses are really into religion, hey, religion! that could work!carl winslow wrote:i dont know much about it but i dont agree with the way the religion treats women, or people of other faiths. I realize that, but it seems a little contradictory to say Alah is a god of peace mercy and love but then to also say that a woman who comitted this crime is goin gto burn forever with no hope. The Koran is the literal word of God, not an interpretation. God spoke in Arabic, and the Koran is his word captured verbatim. There exists no language into which the Koran can be translated and not loose essential information.
God does not waste time talking about a lesson of value to one women. God speaks to all people through the Koran, this time he is speaking on treatment of defeated enemies. A central recurring them in the Koran is kindness to the defeated and don't force Islam onto others, ans show respect to Christians and Jews for they worship the same God.
This appears to be from the Hadith, and extends this lesson of kindness towards defeated enemies to include kindness to animals, and gives examples of a good man who would journey to the bottom of a well to quench a dogs thirst, and a bad man who kept her cat caged and starving. Who the man and woman are is inconsequential, they are not the lesson. The key thing to walk away from this verse with is that all life is precious, even animal life and God will have us killed and burn us in hell for failing to respect all life.

Contradictory in comparison to what? The Christian God's a really nice peaceful guy unless you sleep with someone of the same sex, disobey your parents or work on a Sunday in which case you should be stoned to death and spend eternity burning in hell fire. Or the Jewish God; also a really nice guy aslong as you don't mind your penis being mangled not long after birth. Or the Dallai Lama; upstanding, moral, peaceful and (if he is who he says he is) one of the worlds largest slave owners. I can't be bothered extending illustrations to every religion in the world, but i think my point is clear: They're all nice cuddley happy clapping for Jesus organisations, until you get to know them.

Fuck that statement pisses me off. You know absolutely nothing about what you're talking about. Regardless of if you believe you can scape goat religions as the cause of wars fought in their name or not - you really shouldn't believe that what you see on American news can be generalised for the whole religion. I know more pacifist muslims than I know pacifists of any other religion (except Quakers and Buddhists - but Quakers are Christians and Buddhism isn't technically a religion) - most people who believe in Islaam are pacifists. Osama Bin Ladin was a pacifist for a long time until he was forced (or felt like he was forced) into fighting for Afghanistan when they were invaded by the Russians.carl winslow wrote:i dont know much about it but i dont agree with the way the religion treats women, or people of other faiths. Islam has a history of wars and violence.
Regarding what Mark said - there are plenty of examples like that in all the major religions.
Many people interpret those two lines as promoting racism. Many people also refrute that and say it's about something completely different - and then probably quote other parts of the bible to prove this. Do you honestly want me to make the same kind of judgement on Christianity that you've just made on Islam - based on one or two lines?Mark 7:26-27 wrote:The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
edit: - sorry my post looks a bit confusing - the second paragraph is in regards to what Mark "shredstylez" Schwartz said. I then quote from the book of "Mark" in the N.T. - sorry for any confusion.

jeremy- the first thing i wrote was that i didnt know much about Islam. but i do think from parts of the Koran that i have read that they are not ver nice to women, and historically they have been very violent as a whole.
i know christianity is also harsh on women- women cant be priests etc. and that many wars have been faught because of christianity also.
jeremy you seem to be a flip flopper on the religion issue.
you come out against all religions but than you defend islam. its like you always try to have the most controversial point of view or somthing.

Us antipodeians often have a predisposition towards the underdog which means we often end up "flip flopping" on contentious issues like religion.
I can't speak for Jeremy, but personally although i detest all religion I've lately found myself sticking up for Islam because it seems increasingly more likely that the empire of the united states of america is about to launch a new period of crusades, something that would set the world as a whole back a long way.

Well I'm a christian, and most curches do let women become priests. But then again we also fought a number of huge wars over religion, which is just stupid. I mean the crusades killed more people terrorist attacks, and more Christians probably agreed with the crusades then Islamic people agree with terrosit attacks.
Dustin Rhodes
yeah I dislike all religion pretty much equally - but I also really dislike cultural intolerance - a lot more than I dislike religion. If the main religion on this forum was Islam or Hindu or something else - and people started a topic laying into Christianity - I would defend it. I tolerate and oppose all religion equally. Obviously living in a predominantly Christian country I argue about why Christianity sucks (in my opinion) a lot more than I argue about other religions. Australia's closest neighbour is the biggest Islamic country in the world and I also argue about Islam with people a bit - but it's very important not to generalise and to argue in respect to their interpretations. You can't convince a Quaker that god doesn't exist and their religion is wrong with the same arguments you'd use for an Evangelist
I believe in factual and well researched arguments - not ignorant and intolerant arguments. I would rather have a discussion with somebody who knows what they’re talking about and have spent time thinking through what they’re saying but completely disagrees with me than have a discussion with somebody who knows practically nothing about what they’re talking about – regardless of if they agree or disagree with me.

ok- but if you want to have a factual and well researched argument than i guess im not the person to have the argument with, but to be fair your argument wasnt very well researched either jeremy. all you said was that you knew more pacifist muslims than pacifits of any other religion- so what does that mean? you generalized the entire religion based on the few muslims that you know.
i was at least going by what i knew of history and of the Koran.
