AUSTRALIAN FREESTYLE FOOTBAG CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005

I thought I'd announce these now to give any international player plenty of time to plan and make the trip!!

The event will be a two day event - although there will be kicking every day that Non Melbourne people are in Melbourne and want to kick!!

The dates are Feburary 12 - 13 2005.

Events will be:

MENS
open singles - sick trick, big 3, shred 30, 2 minute routine, most ripping run, shred off
intermediate singles - sick trick, big 3, 1-1.5 minute routine

WOMENS
Open - sick trick, big 3, routine

MENS and WOMENS (combined)
foursquare
flow freestyle (2.5 minutes)[davidson judging]
consecutives
doubles (2-3 minutes)
novice singles - sick trick, big 3

Note that not all these events will run - depending on numbers - but Routines, shred 30 and sick 3 are definitly running for open and intermediate!

We are expecting an excellent turnout of the top players in the Southern Hemisphere. The following people will be attending the event: Johnny Murphy, Dylan Fry, Dan Ednie, Lynton Stephens and of course yours truely (ie. me!) - as well as many up and coming freestylers from Australia and New Zealand.

Free accomodation can be arranged with priorities going to the people that are have travelled the furthest to get to the event. Heres an update of the event programme that i wrote for ausfootbag.org, ill copy it from there:

Ladies and Gentlemen it is on! Preparations for Aussie Nats are in full swing and its now only 1 month away! The event will take place on the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th of February 2005 in Melbourne city. Players attending include Aussie number 1 Dan Ednie and his partner in crime Jeremy O'Wheel, as well as veterans like Brendan Erskine and Lynton Stephens, and a bunch of young talent from across the country. Special guest Dylan Fry (Canada) will be in full effect ripping it up in the circles, BAP style.

Expect 3 days of awesome shred at a variety of venues, BBQs and party nites, random shreds, St Kilda Festival session and a night shred thrown in too. Events, times and locations are listed below. Hope to see everyone there, seasoned players and new people wanting to find out what all the fuss is about!

Prepare for the biggest footbag event in Australian footbag history.

Other Items:
1. If you are staying at someones house you may need to make a small contribution of say $10 per night towards bills and the inconvenince of other house members.

2. There will be an entry fee of $20 to compete in the event, all entrants will recieve a players pack which includes an Ace footbag, drink and any other free stuff we can get our hands on.

3. There will be a merchandise section at the event so anyone with products (that are approved by the organisers) can sell them at the event, the organisers will reguire a fee of 25% on all sales.

Aus champs was awesome!!!!!

Okay we had big names like Dylan Fry, Jeremy O'Wheel, Dan Ednie and Lynton Stephens.

We also had plenty of other sick shredders here too, it was a damn great tournament.
Thanks to Scott Kirchner for organising this event, it was fantastic man.

Dan came 1st in shred 30 with a score of 175, Dylan second and Jeremy 3rd

In sick 3 Jeremy came first with combos like:
fog>smog>pixie double down
some sailing stuff

Dylan came second with spinning ducking osis>spinning ducking clipper>maelstrum

Dan came 3rd with blurry whirl>ripwalk>scorpions tail

In Routines :
1st Dylan
2nd Dan
3rd Jeremy

I think videos will come out pretty soon

I really, really don't want to detract from the performances in this event with my ramblings at all, so let me qualify this as saying that judging is hard and it rarely goes completely right at any tournament.

I'm not trying to say that this event was judged poorly or anything like that - I just want to use this as an example to illustrate a point that was trying to be made a while back regarding Uniques as defined for Shred :30 events. This observation could be made of many events.

For Shred:30 during this event, they counted butterfly set from a toe unique from butterfly set from clipper, so Dan got four uniques for doing four butterflies set from four surfaces. Solely because they did this, Dylan came in second.

Again, I'm not trying to take anything away from Dan's (or anyones) performance - it was obviously dope (can't wait to see video!), but to reiterate my position on this, Uniques are everything in the Shred :30 event and I believe we need to be making our valuation of what exactly counts as "unique" more difficult, not more lax - in short, a butterfly is a butterfly is a butterfly - no matter where you set it from. (see the above thread for more).

In closing, big props to everyone who participated in this event and even bigger props to those who organized it. I'm not saying that "Dylan was robbed" or "the judges for this event suck" - I just think it makes for a perfect example of why I think we need to be more strict counting uniques precisely because they can so greatly effect the outcomes

Nothing negative (personally, I'm having a great day and am very happy at the moment

), just trying to provoke thought on the issue using a real example - it's not a big deal and I hope I've not offended anyone by using this example in this context.

This should post should probably be split from here into another thread in another forum, but I'll leave that for a moderator...

Yeah totally - there were questionable decsions made on in all the main open events in my opinion - but there doesn't really seem to be much that can be done about it - the judges were the most experienced non competitors at the event. Unfortuantly neither judge has been playing footbag in the last year (apart from the odd kicks) - so I guess they weren't up to speed with what's what.

It's a little embarrassing that two of the top 3 winning sick 3 combos were actually "the" - will make for an interesting video. I don't know if Dan won just because of the butterflies. I'd hold my judgement off - he only dropped once and did hit a lot of uniques. I thought some of his ducks and dives were "the" too but I'm happy to wait for the video.

It was a great tournament - really well organised. Judging in all footbag tourments needs a lot of work, professionalism and accountability - as well as more defined and universal guidelines - but that takes time and we'll just have to do the best we can for now.

Well, really, this stuff can be a good thing as you can't get experienced judges without thrusting people into it and having them make minor mistakes - to whoever the judges were (Brendan and Jon?) - you did a good job

I'll paraphrase once again the best judging advice ever given by Steve Goldberg: It's less important how you judge someone as long as you're consistent in judging everyone that same way, everytime.

Well, traditionally, the judges don't have to be non-competitors. Indeed, truly the only people qualified at this point are the competitors, so by placing this restriction on yourself, you are, in a sense, asking for skewed results.

As well, in shred :30, there's really no reason not to have "whoever" actually tally up the math, because there is nothing subjective about the event - the numbers speak for themselves and should be video verifiable. I've added up my own numbers more than once. In my experience, it's done by a group of people, competitors and not. Transparency is good.

Of course it would be ideal not to have competitors judging, but this method is basically how it has to work until we get enough qualified, professional judges - and at that point, having an IFPA certified instructor present at a tournament may even become required for sanctioning of National Level Events.
