106.01. To be used in competition, footbags must:
A. Be approximately spherical in shape;
B. Have a soft, pliable covering--they cannot be rigid balls; C. Be filled with loose pellets (of any material);
D. Be subject to the following size and weight restrictions:
Clearly a sand bag is not filled with loose pellets at all!!!
Actually it says somewhere else that the tournament director can change whatever rules they like - so sandbags aren't banned unless the director decides to ban them - I just wanted to scare all the "sandbaggers" out there
I would class sand as a loose pellet. It does state that it's of any material, and does not mention the grain of pellet. Therefore, I would dictate that sand is acceptable.
nah sand is still legal for sure
sand grains are pellets of very small dimensions, the rules dont specify a minimum size for the pellets.
yeh that's just what I was thinking... by the way how did you ever stumble over that, you just thought you forgot how to footbag or something and wanted to read through the rules again
If you go get a dictionary you'll see that clearly sand is not definied as a pellet of any kind. If you are going to define sand as a pellet you might as well define everything else as pellets too - since they're all made up of small particles (atoms). Fill your bag with a lump of wood - it's a pellet according to some people here...
Pellet: A small usu. rounded mass of something; spec. a hard compressed ball or pill of animal feed, medicine, pesticide, etc.
Sand: Granular matieral consisting of small eroded fragments of (mainly siliceous) rocks, finer than gravel, forming the constituent of a beach, desert, or the bed of a river or sea and used for various purposes, as in smoothing stone, founding, or as an ingredient in morter.
both from the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (5th Edition).
Obviously as I stated at the bottom of my post sand is legal - just according to the rules - which were written before anybody used sand bags - they are not - but as stated in the rules - the decision to follow any rule is up to the tournament director.
I noticed that when I was looking for the legal weight and dimensions for a bag for somebody who asked. Also when I started playing footbag I read pretty much everything on that site (footbag.org).
I never school with sandbags - occasionally I shred with one if I'm in a circle with people who like them but the whole reason I don't play with them is that they are - in my opinion - bad for your technique - so it would be silly - in my opinion - to use one to school a move. If you need a sandbag to hit a move - you need to work on early components more.
If a pellet is a small usu. rounded mass of something, then it can definetly be sand.
Just because sand is not directly defined as being a pellet, then that does not mean it can't be one.
No one was talking about the small particles that make up an object. So I don't really understand where you were going with the whole lump of wood thing.
If I'm not mistaken, that section if the IFC rulebook hasn't been updated since the Early 90's. I remember when I got my first rulebook in '96 I talked to Bruce at the WFA and he said they planned on getting around to redoing it sometime. Obviously that time never came.
well what if i put steel bbs in my bag then put magnets in the inside of my shoes? think any one would notice? we need a updated rule book, where can you get rule books any how?
Good luck to you. I can't really see that helping much personally - stalling a footbag isn't that hard - it's what you do while it's in the air that is the tricky part.
