Is using Shoe-Goo etc to compensate for poor ankle flatness acceptable?

Yes, i think you should do anything to improve your game.

No, a mod of this kind is unacceptable, the player should live with it.

Your views on shoe modding

Post by King Monkey »

Hey i hope this topic hasnt been thrashed out previously.
I have very poor clipper flatness and it is hindering my progression in a big way. The problem with it is that my ankles dont seem to physically get any flatter, even when you try and hold them in a flat position. It would appear that they are just built in a crap way and wont function like other people's ankles.

At Aussie Nationals it was recommended to me by a high level freestyler to start using a little bit of Shoe-Goo on the instep of my Lavers, to help with roll-off.

Since i started playing i have always been against using Shoe-Goo or other things stuck to your shoes, but with my ankles refusing to improve and me really wanting to get better, im more and more tempted to do it.

So what does everyone think about this kind of thing? Is it cheating? Would you respect a player less for using it? Would i get laughed out at big tournaments?

I think if your clippers are truly incapable of getting flatter, then shoegoo it up. However, I thought I couldn't get my clippers any flatter until I started doing yoga recently. There's a certain posture that I do for footbag and I think it has actually helped increase my clipper flatness (not that I had a problem with clipper flatness in the first place, but the flatter the better). I also find that doing a lot of inside stalls before playing to warm my clippers up helps a lot. If you want me to describe that posture to you, though, PM me.

Yeah, yoga does help, a lot in fact.

I have mixed feelings, someday they will probably make shoes with extra flat insides for this purpose but until then.... I don't know.

I know some hacky sackers that would call it a low move and coming from them, it is very low. I guess as long as it isn't used in compititions it is alright.

I`m assuming you`re talking about Lynton. I have never played with Lynton, but in the footbag community his shoe goo is pretty infamous. Can anybody confirm the rumor that Lynton was unable to do clipper moves before shoe-gooing his shoes?

its not our fault that footbag shoes haven`t been made. So I think a little bit of shoe goo on certain models is acceptable, but when the amount of goo used is ridiculous, its definitely not legit.

Lynton said that back when he was schooling he had crappy inside shoes so he just schooled the shit outta toe moves, maybe thats why hes good at All the atomic sets etc.

He can still do heaps of madd clipper moves.

He has red lavers but i dont think he has any shoo goo on it

Thanks for your input Ken, and everyone so far. Keep the opinions coming please!

It was actually Dan who recommended it to me, he is pretty adamant that its what i should do and that its acceptable. Jeremy also agreed it was fine to do it.
Lynton's red Lavers have Blu-Tac and stuff on them, a fair bit i thought.

I am all for the canvas mods but the shoe goo thing...I am a little Iffy on. If you stretch for the clippers like cross your feet and stand on the outsides (that may be hard to follow, mosher did it in a video one time, that is where I saw it.) it will be eaiser to hit.

I can't believe I'm hearing a "cheating" accusation from such an experienced freestyler. Really. Haven't we all heard it enough from circle kickers?

Should somone's inflexible ankles disqualify them from footbag?? I always thought that it was what happened between the contacts that changed footbag from a stoner passtime to a sport. We shouldn't EVER stand in the way of someone using necessary equipment to take their game to that level.

No amount of shoe goo is going to change the fact that you need to get your foot under the bag, and that you need to provide adaquate cushion to keep it from bouncing off. No amount of shoe goo is going to help you hit a superfly - it only gives your the opportunity to do so.

I think players should focus first on getting their ankle flat, if there is no improvement than maybe it is okay for the shoe goo rail. Plus it also depends with what shoe you have, like with the CT 520's, alot of people added the rail except me, because I feel like there already is a nice landing deck and I can crank my ankle (just takes time to get use to the shoe, but it is a very nice shred shoe). So I guess it just all depends...

OK, first off im sure u can get your clipers flater, stretch, do broka mod if you havent done so all ready. do yogo < i do it and it dose really help just stretching good really helps and cranking, maybe you arent cranking your ankle as much as u could, crank till if feels like the fuckers gonna snap, and if it dose, shit sorry for the advice :P

the shoe-goo thing, dont use shoe-goo for the inside, not that i have any thing agensted it. just if your gonna do the inside, go buy some clear cocking, i think i maybe spelling it the wrong way, its the stuff that comes in a big tube and then there is this device that u push the top in and squize the triger and it comes out, they use it to water proof windows and showers, and other stuff. it will work ALOT better, shoe-goo is just messy, hard to work with, takes for fucing ever to dry, will not last as long, and will take up alot lot more time. I belive tom moser is the one who tought me this, this is what he did to his climas, and may i add he did a WONDERFUL job. my one friend who got in to kicking didnt have lavers or money for them for a good month, so we cocked his insides on his vans, and modded the insides out. and they turned out really nice. put the cocking on it then at the ends u can razor blade it off and make it look slick and clean, on my friends vans we even painted them then and they dont even look noticiabule that we did the inside mod to them, they look crazy odd bc how flat the insides are. it reallly helped with his clipers, i cant wait for his lavers to get here!

so cocking<<< is where its at.

some one correct my spelling plz if im spelling this product wrong.

Definitely go for it. If there is something wrong with shoe-gooing your shoes, then there is also something wrong with people using freestyle shoes, since both give an advantage in footbag.

Why not make the best of the equipment you have? Why settle for something less than perfect? GO SHOE GOO CRAZY!

If you need shoegloo you shouldn't be playing footbag. Tough it out, one-modded lavers have worked perfectly fine for over 20 years.

... just like random shoes worked fine before Lavers ...

This is lunacy. Sorry to be blunt, but you're going out of your way to slow down the evolution of the sports equipment (what, you think we're done? We don't even have a shoe!), not to mention the personal progress of a footbag player. Plus you had to be insulting about it.

Ok Newf, heres some trivia for you:
Why dont they let hockey players curve their sticks past a certain shape?

I'll throw in a cookie if you get the answer right.

Um actually if I could just jump in here. The reason why they limit the curve on the stick is mostly a safe reason. When you hook/slash with a curve of that size it will do more damage then a less curved stick. They tend to break more and are just overall more dangerous. But yeah there is also the reason your getting at.

Personaly, I don't have a problem with it.

Now I'm going to run away because I'm scared.......
I think I going to take over Canada. You should help.
