How strong do you pull?

How strong do you pull the thread if you finished one pentagon?

a friend once told be that he started out by putting an eraser in the pentagon he was gathering so make each gather even. Maybe pull until you feel like the gather is as big as the circumference of your pinky finger?? The tigher you pull, the slower it breaks in, but the longer the bag lasts. At least thas what I have found with my stitching experiences.
