If someone looking like that knocked on my door, my initial reaction would be to grab the shovel and go out a-swingin.

He looks like an alien, it's scary.

I hate the fact that sexual offender registers exist. The law in most western countries comes from a philosophy that once you've served your punishment you are free. Registers like that mean that the person will never be free. Also I think it kind of sucks to make fun of people because of the way they look.

Sure Jeremy, but unlike robbing a bank, being a sexual offender is a disease, whereas the stem of robbign a bank comes from greed or poverty.

I don't really know where I fall on the issue either way.

Surely if it's a disease than the person can't help it. In my opinion people commit sexual offences because they have some serious problems in their head. The guy in the photo for example was probably really badly teased and tormented because of the way he looks - he is probably a social outcast and finds it very hard to fit in with society. Continual persecuation of him won't make him better. That's not to say he should be free to do whatever he wants or that he is a victim. If he's a threat to society he should be treated until he's no longer a threat. If that takes the rest of his life than so be it. There's no point in letting to roam free in society if he's still a threat and there's no point locking him up if he is a threat.

I believe in rehabilitation rather than punishment. The aim of "justice" should be to make sure the person understands why their crime is a crime and why they shouldn't do it again - and have them have no desire to commit the crime again either.

I find the idea of vengence pretty disgusting and I view people that want to see somebody else suffer very very lowly (regardless of what that person did).

It's sad that we live in such a materalistic society where people will only talk to or be friendly with other people based on how they look - and believe somehow that if you have pain - somebody elses pain will take your pain away.

I hope that one day we live in a truely tolerant society - with truely tolerant people. I'm sure it's not going to happen - but at the least I can live how I think other people should live.

Well, I think most of the harsher penalty's in country's judicial systems come from the belief that it will serve as a deterent, not necisarily to see people suffer, even if that is possibly an underlying motive.
