A slight delema

Post by NotHisRealName »

Ok, so I been working at a chain hardware store now for about 16 months. The job has had it's ups and downs, but more recently it's had it's downs.
This led me to look for a transfer to another store, closer to my home.

So, after sending off the application for this other job (same business and all, just different managers), I hear nothing back... but all is cool. We now have a new department manager, and I'm getting on better with the people I work with.

(Actually, I went on a couple of 'dates' with a girl from my department... things were going really well but then I started getting nothing. After racking my brain as to what was going on, and suffering emotionally - I suffer depression - I came to realise that she didn't want to have a relationship with a guy she works so closely with, but she never told me that... it was other people. The thing that shits me is that she was very 'familiar' with me on occasions and it pisses me off that she was all "I really like you" in body language, but... didn't. Anyway, back to the story.)

So then I organised to have a week off... next week. All was approved and my new manager was practically bending over backwards to help me out.

But then I get a call this morning, on my day off, and it's a department manager from the store I applied to. He offered me a position there. It's not what I applied for, but it's similar to what I'm already doing. The good thing is that it's only 10mins from home, and not 30.
The problem is that it's a shit hole compared to the place I'm working now. It's so much smaller and looks like it would be a hard place to work in.

Now... Like I said, I suffer from depression, and I don't adjust to change well. However, should I take on this new position and accept it as a challenge? The up side is that they're looking to expand the department, so I'd be (eventually) working in a fandangled new location in time, asside from being consulted with the design/layout of the new area.

But then, I've got a good level of resposibility at my current location. The new boss is cool, and the people I work with are (mostly) awesome. The problem with them is that they're only work mates, and not 'friends'. Asside from the girl I 'dated' (twice), I've not really done anything out of work with them.

So the new job could be an opportunity to make some new friends, in stead of just having workmates.

But then, I'm leaving the people I really enjoy working with. It's those people that make it worth going in to work every day for.

Sigh.

I'm sorry to rant and rave. I just needed to vent my concerns and maybe get some guidence at the same time.

I've said that I'm keen to work at the new job, but I want to talk to my new manager and tell her what's going on and see if she can come up with some sort of 'offer' to keep me there, in stead of moving to the new place.

Hmmmm. Well I go back to work tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Which job pays more? Thirty minutes isn't really that far to drive or walk. I don't know, but to me it seems like you're only concidering the new job because it's closer and you want to make friends, not just work buddies. I don't know about the "planning on expansion" thing. I've heard that too many times from too many of my friends to belive that's gonna happen. That last sentence isn't meant as an insult it's meant as a warning.

Don't get a new job because you think you'll make friends there. I don't like to work with friends because work related issues always come up after work if you work with friends. But if you really want friends from work, organize a BBQ or something. Tell them you're gonna have a party and invite them. Find one that has similar interest as you. Find out about the kind of things they like to do outside of work. At least you still get to have work friends, I work with two menepausal (sp?) women. That's it!!! A lawyer and an office manager/head legal assistant. Consider yourself lucky my friend.

I wouldn't worry about the girl too much. That's kinda retarded anyway. Don't try to pull the "but I reeeeaaaaallllllly want this one" thing. You're not a child anymore. If you really want her then go after her. If it's just a crush, let it go.

To me, the benefits of where you're at right now seem to far out weigh the benefits of gettin the new job. That's just my opinion though. Hope I was helpful. Don't worry so much. If you really think about it there really isn't very much that should depress you. Don't think about all the negative things in your life, that's not very fun, think about all the positive.

Haha ask an American what job to take and this is the question he will ask you in return. I thought the exact same thing :)

Girls are crazy there is just nothing more to it. (boys are crazy too, but I play for the boys team) I've had girls pull just about every form of nonsense on me and also do just about everything great for me. I gave up trying to sort it all out and I just sit and watch the chips fall where they fall. It doesn't really change the outcome of anything, but it does preserve my sanity somewhat.

I came to the conclusion that I enjoy working outside. The new job means that I'd be inside. I think that was the deciding factor.
I'd started writing out the pros and cons and I think the cons for changing jobs were more weighty.

Yeah, the girl thing is not really an issue. I'm dealing with it. Besides, she had her chance and she missed it, so, fuck it. I'm moving on.

I'm going to tell the manager of the other place that when the expansions come through and they put a landscaping department in (that's where I'm working now) to their new store, then I'll be up for the move, but not to a shitty little department that seems more like an afterthought than anything special.

Thanks to those people who replied and sent me PM's, too. I appreciate your thoughts, suggestions and concerns.

Note: I've mentioned a few times now that I suffer depression, not for simpathy (fortunately I've been shown none), but for understanding. I'm 27 and have been through some seriously shitty times in my life and at the moment I can't really play footbag because of my knee. Footbag has been my release and meditation, so things have been hard. I just want everyone out there to know that if ever you're feeling down, it's not the end of the world - you'll know that when it happens. Talk to someone and vent. There are people who understand.
Right now I'm feeling good, that's why the sickeningly positive reply here.
