"Hacky Sack" on much music
It's 8:22pm Atlantic time and I'm watching Much Music's "One Hit Wonder's" show. They just (about 30 seconds ago) had a little section about "hacky sack" and made fun of it about how people call it footbag. The VJ, Jenn, said that she spoke with someone from the Toronto "footsack organization" followed by her saying "one actually exists?" (or something along those lines) and said that the person that she talked to refused to appear on the show and also said "footbag is not a one hit wonder that fits in to your show, it's not a fad... it's a sport". Jenn then said "sport? yeah right, try telling that to the owner of a store I went into that didn't know what a hacky sack was.
Fuck I wish people wouldn't be so ignorant. Why can't people research something before they say stupid shit that makes them look dumb in the long run? Sad thing is that the vast majority of people who saw the show would agree with everything that the VJ Jenn said.
Of course those quotes aren't exactly what was said, pretty close so.

I understsand completely what you are saying. And I agree fully! But you would think that once the footbagger from Toronto said what he did, they would at least go to google and type in "footbag" or something.
Even if they did, I bet they would still air what they did because that's the way TV works I guess.

... they do have a website. http://www.muchmusic.com
Hopefully if any e-mails are sent they'll be well thought out, well spelled, and packed with good footbag facts/information/resources instead of merely attacking them for being lazy or incompetent reporters (or whatever they are.) This might be a good opportunity to give them easy access to figures on how many clubs exist in the country and the world, and how many events happen around the world annually (maybe include a direct link to an impressive footbag video?)Chris Hanratty wrote:... they do have a website. http://www.muchmusic.com
After all that, maybe a formal request for a public "update" on their story would help. I'm just thinking out loud while bored at work.
...what, wrong thread?

What do you think people think when they see footbagers shredding. They dont know the lingo or any of the moves. They just see some kid with short shorts and cut up shoes dancing around a bag. I can see someone dissing footbag. But I wont let it bother me.
People ask me what I am doing and I say footbag, and they say "You mean hacky sack?" and I am like ,"No, footbag" Then I will give them the websites. But for some ignorant person to be like "Footbag is not a sport." is not cool. There are competitions, people who do it are in pretty good shape, we kick a ball like object around, I mean god, it has all the qualifications for a sport.
I have a quote for that lady,"It is better to be thought stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
I have to say though, If someone played like hopscotch hardcore, I would probably laugh and say it was not a sport...but if I look closer it sorta kinda is...I just refuse to play.

the spot to send the email is to the corporations who are advertising on the show.
Politely inform them that you saw their product place on one hit wonders during an escapade of ignorance. Unfortunately, in this post 9-11 world, we can't afford ignorance, and I will be boycotting your products as you choose to support perveyors of propaganda.
If you can cost them one advertiser, you will get more attention than a million emails.

And I also agree with Cameron about the emailing advertisers instead of the people themselves. And someone who's really smart and good with words should do it (like Cameron), not an emotional, holier-than-thou teenager (like myself).

Holy Shit!
I haven't been on the forum lately, but now I see this. I wish I had actually seen it on much music. FUCK! They actually went ahead with it?! It was Andrew Weglarz of f.a.t. that was contacted by Jen, and he and I wrote that dumb bitch back.
We were quite offended and told her it makes NO sense to put footbag on that show. We said we'd be more than glad to do something for the station, but not on that show, as it is not and never has been a "fad" or a "one hit wonder". It isn't even popular yet! We also told her that she should maybe research footbag and little, and gave her some websites. She obviously went to footbag.org intially, that's how she found out about us. What a fucking idiot. I can't believe she acted like the owner of a store not knowing about footbag totally discredits it as a sport. She seemed like the type of person to like underground shit and she didn't seem like the type of person to care about things being merchandised. What a knob.
FUCK MUCH MUSIC. I'm bitching about this for sure.
UGHHHHH! WHAT A FUCKING LOSER HOBAG!
Jared, what are you talking about? Why would telling Much Music to go fuck themselves make us not cool?also, they can't possibly have talked to anybody from FAT (footbag association of toronto) cause they're all so cool. stupid crappy much music.

Sorry, I was sorta confused. I have to admit that i've never really watched Much Music. I get Much More Music for free for some reason, but I don't really know how the other station works. I can totally see how you'd decline to be on a show about 'one hit wonders'. Why would they have contacted you anyway? Isn't it supposed to be about 'musical' one hit wonders? We said we'd be more than glad to do something for the station, but not on that show, as it is not and never has been a "fad" or a "one hit wonder".

It's only a name. It's how YOU interpret it that matters. If someone talks about me playing and they keep saying Hacky-Sack I'm not going to make a huge effort to correct them. That's what they feel comfortable saying, so why should it make me uncomfortable? I don't mind if people aren't educated about terminology. Also, keep in mind that Footbag is one of those "judged" sports (I'm not positive how Shred 30 works.. but the ADDS system takes a bit of time to understand/appreciate). Anyways, I'd say we're most closely associated with freestyle sports (skiing, boarding, skateboarding) which are hard for some people to accept as true sports. I don't think footbag will ever been seen as a sport like Ariels, Ice Dancing or Diving for example (JUDGED sports that are recognized as sports.. sorta
).
Regardless.. Much Music person is stupid and I now official hate her.

There is such a thing as quantity of publicity and quality of publicity. Right now, our sport is considered an alternative sport. I'd say it's among the ranks of poy, devil sticks, etc... I don't think that's a bad thing, I'd just like to see it grow beyond that.
Also, we have other drug related generalizations that need to be dealt with.
I'd just like to thank Camille for all her support in writing the email. It wouldn't have been half as concise, hell it wouldn't have been even close to what it was without her.
I wasn't offended at all. I was hoping that this opportunity would lead to footbag on another show like MOD (Much On Demand). We were quite offended and told her it makes NO sense to put footbag on that show
