Modified needs to go!...?
By making modified not a forum option (taking it down) we would essentially be herding all of us over to the .org forums.
I have a question for all of you. If we were able to transport our footblog, challenges, and online competition forums over to the .org forum listings would you happily resume your posting ways over at .org?
I consider modified the online footbag community, .org picks up all the newbies or curious folks, if we were all just "hanging out" over there we'd be able to help so many more players and overall help our sport.

I would not resume posting, and would probably vanish from online discussions. I have numerous little gripes about .org policies that prevent me from having any interest in posting there on a regular basis, regardless of the topics offered.
It's not like people don't know .org has a forum, there is a reason people don't post there, and I don't feel like a blog is one of them. Dot org has no feeling of community, and no feeling of free expression. It's comparable to the difference between discussing sex in school with teachers vs over a beer and a bong hit with your friends. One scenario has minimal participation to get through the class, and the other is a free open discussion where things that won't get said in a classroom are explored. I actually think .org want their forum to be strictly business, and the responses indicate the interest in players having that be the main forum.
.org will grow in time, but throwing the modified crowd over there, with our current discussion philosophies is probably the last thing steve wants on his forum.

I see what you're getting at, I really do. But I always found that talking on .ORG/forum feels a bit like trying to have a party in your basement at 15 when your parents are upstairs. This isn't anyone's fault, it's just the nature of the situation. Modified is purely community based, which I suppose .ORG/forum is as well, but there's a difference that I can't really put into words.
I think a decent balance has been struck. It's very rare now that a newbie question on .ORG/forum goes unanswered for more than a day now. When I made the above post, it was a personal mission to stop hanging newbs out to dry on .ORG/forum, and now I can hardly ever get to a fresh question that hasn't already been handled well.
Which of our communication needs do you think aren't being met?
Edit: It would seem that Tsiankun has already made a similar analogy with better prose and has put into words that which I couldn't. I was owned.

I really tried to make this happen when .org opened, even switched myself for a while and abandoned modified, as did a few others, but it didn't work out. And this was before blags...although I would go back there without my blog now. I even suggested at the time that we simply moved this entire forum, all the records of posts, users, and format, over to .org and simply forward the modified address to .org ( I thought it would be nice for Jer to not have to pay for this site anymore since he didn't even use it)
Then the idea of this being the "Canadian" forum came up, and .org being the US forum, put that wasn't true either way.
The policy on .org may not be best, but is negotiable I bet, and if we all did move, we'd all be in one place (I know we lost many baps here when .org opened, and they have some that weren't here in the first place). The best thing though is that we'd get rid of all the CRAP that goes on here, and I hate to sound mean or harsh, but hacky slackers who don't play and post out of their asses all day for no good reason other than boredom would have to go, and threads would be much more productive and better off. And there'd be no more flame wars allowing people to display their hateful idiocy that makes certain long time shredders and all star video makers quit the sport... Footbag used to have very little negativity, and this forum has allowed people that have not imbursed thems in the sport and witnessed this and purged there own negativity to bring negative attitudes in and piss off people and divide what was once peacefully whole. I used to say any footbagger could come stay at my house, but because negativity has been tolerated, and in some cases flowered ( 10 pages in a single thread in 1 day FULL of it), there are some people I would have to say couldn't stay at my house, and I don't like that. I've said it before that I say peace at the end of my posts for a specific reason, but until there is peace in the footbag community again, it will not be the same.
.ORG's moderation would most likely bring that peace.
PEACE,
Bum
PS: I'd like to here from Flipsider on this, if you're out there. Your forum collapsed and was full of negativity (and I bet it came straight here...), What do you think about peaceful goals vs free speech and uniting the forum community?

Despite what you said about negativity I find this forum one of the most friendly and helpful online. If it werent for .org and modified I wouldnt have found footbag and i definately wouldnt have continued playing.
I know what you mean about how .org feels but this might be a good thing. When i came to footbag i found it very easy to ask questions there and they were always answered. I feel here may be more of a 'social' footbag community be a bit more closed to the absolute newbie but as players progress here provides some where to talk footbag and just chill out.
I dunno none of this is written in concrete and footbag will always be changing.

The footbag community seems like it is dead when people find .org and then check the forum. I bet it is very discouraging.
The feeling of community wouldn't be lost if we all moved over there and the footbag world would be better off for it.
All we would really need is a really extensive FAQ to answer all the "wut kiNd of hacky sak shoud i gEt???" that will inevitably arrise.
Though.. currently .org acts as a filter of sorts, only the more dedicated people find modified and trickle through into our ranks.
It's just relatively absurd that the such a large percentage of the community is gathered tightly on one forum and that forum isn't the one that was made specifically for that purpose.
I know that in time this will be sorted out, it has to, this is so dumb right now.

exactly those ( atw ; what hacky is the best) are the future of this sport!
right now newbs get some answers to their questions , that is a good thing .
To implement a community over there would be a great advantage to keep the newbs in the sport too.
it is hard to play a sport on your own . if you know that there is an online community out there too than it is much easier - most of them do not found modified before quitting ( or starting ) freestyle.
we should try to change that that the most of the questions would refer to triple dex tricks .
it is ridiculous to rant about moderation - just give it a try and come back to modified if you do not like it.
the rss feeds are a great thing - I guess Allan and Steve are on their way in the right direction - maybe you can support them by joining the community.
I doubt that there will be much moderation .

.org is slow now. Join IFPA here, and help make it faster. With ten bucks a year, you can't go wrong. Or if you want bragging rights, do what I did.peanutbuterboy wrote:I think dot org is so so so slow...and dont get me wrong but no one there knows what the search button is, so every day there is a What shoe or is this a good bag, or How do I do atw post.
I love modified...
So newbies post silly questions on newbies' section, is that such a bad thing. I bet you used to be a newb in both footbag and forum etiquette.

I would love to see EVERYTHING at footbag.org, but like Cameron I have my issues with .org. I love Steve and I love Allan, but it's just really overstuctured and stagnant there. I would love to see the moves list updated (some moves don't even make sense), I would love to see the site look nicer (it hurts my eyes a lot ot the time), and I would like to see less of a conservative/restrained atmosphere there. I feel very suffocated and not very motivated to navigate the site (I peruse maybe once a year, but never really find anything new). That's all just constructive crit. I am very in support of Footbag.org, but I think some things should change before I would sacrifice Modified for it.
I think one of the best parts about Modified is that there really isn't anybody in charge. There are admin and mods, and there is Jer, but they are very silent and don't really act on anything much, ever. It's like the forum by the community for the community -- that's the appeal.

Yes they do...and yes I did. I spoke out of place...

I'm a member on both forums and say that I much prefer modified. The Layout of the board is great with no annoying sidebar, and the rules are easy to follow. I probably wouldn't resme posting if we moved to .org due to this, and a few other reasons. I consider .org to be an excellent footbag resource, but not really a good footbag forum.

The forum at .org is to slow and it does get the same questions asked over and over and over agian. IMO modified is a much better forum. .org is great for everthing else though. Let the newbs stay at .org (since it is a very good site to start from) and let the more serious newbs move on to modified.
You could always just go to both forums or if you have problems with one or both of the forums, gotta quote steve on this one, "Start your own!"
That is a perfect statement.tom wrote:Though.. currently .org acts as a filter of sorts, only the more dedicated people find modified and trickle through into our ranks.
I don't think it'd get rid of anything. If we all moved to .org the same thing would happen. There would be too many people. Somebody is always gonna say something that somebody else doesn't agree with and we all know where it goes from there. (**)Besides, if you're gonna quit shredding because of negative posts on the internet, maybe it's time for you to go anyway.
