I was just wondering the ol' question of how long did you play "hacky sack" in circles for consectutives before you learned or started to play freestyle.

Also, what made you turn to freestyle? A cool move someone did? Another freestyler? Found .org?

What brought you here to modified

Finally for fun, what is all of you freestylers' / jousters' kicking records?

I played hack from 8th-10th grade and started after seeing a guy bust atw>legover. It was insane! Afterwards I looked up hackysack tricks and found hackrifice.com!! Best site ever, vandall is god, even to this day with his "university" not college, non fully active ass. Then I found .org and used the forums for a little bit and heard of this forum and made the switch.


I really don't see how you guys count your kicks. It really messes with me trying to keep up. The most I've counted is a mere 250 or so. But I remember once using the clock at school and kicked for over 20 mins straight. Thats a workout

I started kicking in 1997. I played on and off until grade 11 (2001). In september of that year - which was school holidays my twin brother went off to a debating camp. I was bored, looked on the internet for "hacky sack" found footbag.org watched Ryans worlds vid and was like woah. Memorised the site and schooled myself pretty hard for the holidays.

I really can't remember how I found out about modified.

I hacked for a while starting in 8th grade. Then I saw footbag worlds in whatever year it was in San Fransisco. I was blown away, but I didn't really start playing. Then I stopped hacking as well after getting board having gotten like 600 something consecutive kicks. Later I was board and wanted to learn something cool so I decided that footbag thing I had seen a while ago seemed like a good thing to do. I found .org by searching for footbag, and on their forums I found modified.

I started cirlce kicking in 7th grade and looked up hacky sack tricks in 8th grade and found flipsider and got lavers and went from there in 8th grade I am now in 9th

Well when I was 12 at what we call intermediate in NZ we had this sewing class and we made a hacky sack out of crapy material and rice for filler. This thing was huge (almost the size of a baseball). 2 pannels and totally unusable. Ok thats not where I got started but wish it was. I saw people hack a few times at intermediate but I had no money to buy any hacks and the thing we made was shit.

Well in high school around 1999 a friend of mine brang a juggling ball he got from the arcades that he got from exchanging tickets. A circle got started but we were all crap. Started off with ol' one one kick styles. We used juggling balls for a while (theyre solid and a piece of shit to kick) until I bought a crochet hack one day. Probably when we got any skills at all. Started learning basic stalls, jesters, butterfly kicks, parrots (shoulder stalls), knee pit stalls, wraps and stuff like that. Used crochets from then till end of high school. searched for hacky sack on the net and found footbag.org and saw clipper and a scorpions tail vid and thought damn impossible and we never really went back then and didnt improve.

After high school nobody really wanted to kick except me. Used to kick in town every weekend with one mate of mine until he left for a while. Cant remember when but one day I saw himi on the bus when hed come back and I think we got going again. Him, me and another two mates started having regualar kick in weekends. In 2001 I went to the NZ footbag event called Just for Kicks. Thats when I got my first 32 pannel footbag. Took a bit of time to get used to but thats when I got more serious with footbag and started improving. Started learning mirages, leg overs, atw, clippers and stuff like that. Started going to all the events not really having improved much. Can hit a some 3 add moves and a couple of 4s every now and then. Need to work on consistency. Always about consistency and even more so when I keep stopping playing for different periods of time. Less time to kick with mates cause everyone working at different times and they start losing interest.

Found modified after searching for footbag forums I think. Found a few dead ones then found modified.

STORY
I started playing in grade 7 (11 years old -- 11 years ago...), when all the other kids started kicking around a guatemalan bag. I became obsessed, as I found I was naturally talented and could do, like, 14 inside kicks in a row (on one foot, with lots of hopping). For my birthday that year I asked for hacky sacks, and I got this brown and green guatemalan from Kevin Kazubek, and a "big bead" bag (apparently the best of the best) -- the orange and blue one on http://www.worldfootbag.com -- from Sean Koslowsky (this may have come in, like, a plastic casing..kind of the same as what you buy action figures in).

I started playing every single day and bussing to school 1.5 hours-ish early every single day to play "pellet" with my friend, the janitor's son, Gustavo Garcia, in addition to some other people who lived far away and car-pooled to school really early in the morning (including a grade 8 kid who I got mad at and threw a compass (the spikey one, right?), from a geometry set, at one morning.

I think I found footbag.org in grade 10, though maybe 9. It was after I saw She's All That at the 50-cent threatre (Cinema City , that I decided my goal in life was to become better at hacky sack than "Freddie Prinze Jr.". The first thing I did when I got home was look up hacky sack on the internet and found footbag.org. I started looking at the site every single day at school, at lunch and in my computer class. I watched Ryan Mulroney's 1997 routine (the SICK one to They Must Be Giants' "SEXXY" -- EPIC!!!!!!! Best routine to this day!) and was appalled! I had a couple friends who were interested with me and watched videos with me at school, Ben Enns, and Mike Dorries. I found Hackrifice (http://www.geocities.com/hackrifice) and signed the guestbook asking if they needed help with the website. I guess I had signed up on footbag.org and I got a call the following Saturday from Joel Dion telling me to come out to the weekly 2-5 hackrifice jam at the River Osborne Community Centre. He asked if I could do an "Around the World" -- I had no idea what this meant. I've written this a lot of times, but that's basically it...They taught me tricks and I went out every single week and I printed off the entire list of tricks from footbag.org, using it as a checklist and a guide (I thought I would never ever hit any 3 adds!) -- it was basically my bible in highschool and I recently found the same copy, which I plan to use again when I can play, since I still have not completed the list @______@

MODIFIEDThe "first" footbag forum was started by Cole Hobson and Mike Wilson, years ago -- 2000? There were maybe 10 posters of us altogether (this was back when the mailing list was really the only way people had big discussions like this) including James Risden, Tim Werner, Rob Fuller, Windsen Pan. We evolved the forum, from one of those really crappy ones where all the threads are just a big page in order and the replies to posts were tabbed over, you know? And eventually with enough posts it became a huge mess. i think we went through a couple more forums -- lots of people joined the third one, and then there was a suggested to move to this new thing called PHP, or some jazz. This guy Jeremy, from somewhere in Ontario (I completely forget everything about him, and wonder if I ever knew anything about him in the first place), "owned" a webhosting company and offered to host it there. I was against the idea at first, because I liked the then-current forum, and didn't go sign in when everyone else (Rob, Jer and Matt) did. Eventually everyone moved over (it was a pretty big move I think, I forget how many people were at the pre-Modified forum, but probably not even 50).




CONSECUTIVES
My consecutives record is 1100-something, from the consecutives event we held at hackrifice one year. It took about 15 minutes and I was pretty slick and did a bunch of two adds near the end to show off (SICK!) i've never tried to beat it since -- but it might be a good aerobic warmup. My mom used to give me a freezy for evey 1000 jumps I did on my pogo stick! (warning -- it burns your feet if you go barefoot and touch the central stick part)

1. Played hackey slack for a year before discovering freestyle.
2. A fellow `slacker ran into freestylers in the park, who told him about a tournament that weekend, which I attended, and then the rest is history.
3. I once got 1812 consecutives. I ended on that number because I liked the 1812 Overture, but mostly because lunch had ended and classes were gonna start. Consecs can be really soothing... and really boring.

Lol yeah, i'm still not that much into freestyle...yet, but i've been circle kicking off and on since 7th grade, seems like thats when everyone starts, but since the end of last year i've been kicking constantly, during the summer mostly by myself, but this year i have found a good group of friends who like to kick the "hack" around, but whenever i try to do something like a flying clipper, and miss, they chastise me for it... so i'm hoping to school on alot of freestyle stuff during the summer, and hopefully make them realize how cool it is. As for modified, i found it through Monsterhack.com, which i found through footbag.org. My consecs record is 248 so far, hoping to break 300 soon.

I played hacky sack for a year and a half before discovering freestyle in December of 03'. My senior year in highschool, and the year in which I met the Eugene footbag association, along with ToTT1/2.

I found modified after using the Flipsider forum so much in 03. I didn't get into posting here really until I joined the Marine Corps that summer.

Erik you always forget that I was at that forum too! Haha. This forum (more like a bunch of random threads, like Erik said) was how I started in footbag. I asked a lot of stupid questions and I would read the footbag.org lists and I would talk to Mike Wilson through e-mail. I actually have some of his 4-panel sandbags, which were pretty cool. Anyways, I was part (albeit a small part) of the original forum... and I followed it all the way to modified. The footbag.org lists used to be cool too man. All the guys I admired would mail each other and I would get to read what they were hitting and be amazed. I actually have a "Footbag World" magazine from like 1996 or 98... it's pretty cool. Very old though. I really didn't start freestyling till I was a junior in high school, and then I tore my ACL after that year, so I had to take a break till about April of senior year... and now I'm playing some in college, but school just takes up a lot of time.

In grade school I had a fake 2 paneled bag. My friend and I tried to keep it off the ground by hitting it with our hands....then we said, "Let's try with our feet!" We only played like twice though.

Summer b4 high school
My friend Eric, who was a year older than me brought hacky sack from his high school. We played all summer. First trick I saw was lap catch>butterflier.

High School
Played everyday! Hours and hours and hours! Saw ATW and inside delay. Met Zeke.

College (1999)
Found .org. Event coming up in chicago...Lemme check it out...

Had never seen tricks b4; I was totally blown away. Met Zeke again.

i started circle kicking in like 6th grade(i could only get maby one kick at that time) and kept going till like the middle of 8thgrade year when a friend of mine showed me Flipsider and i was amazed by how they moved like that and soo i bought a pair of red lavers and a sandman and it just took off from there....i am now in 9th grade
