Anyways, so my shoes are CT 520s. I found the toe box on the CT 520s to be naturally large as it was, but I wanted to try out this mod to spread the word to everyone else, because I thought it looked like a good mod and John really put a lot of work into making the tutorial. I thought it was a shame that no one really does this mod other than John and Bob. So I went to the store and bought the materials (which are, by the way, CHEAP) and set to work on the mod.
As soon as I started the mod, I screwed it up. I accidentally cut an eyelet that I wanted to keep. So I won't do that next time. Anyways, after I cut the eyelets back, I worked on cutting and fitting my tubing. It's fairly easy to do y'all. I thought it would be hard and confusing but it's really not. You essentially cut the length of tubing you want, and then cut a line into it so you can fold it around the flaps of the shoe, and then cut the corners off so it won't cover the eyelet of your shoe, and then you glue it on and check it every once and a while to make sure that it is staying alongside the flap that you glue it to.
On the CTs I think this is overkill and I don't think it will help all that much, BUT I know that it would help on the Lavers. The Lavers (at least mine) had a smaller toe box, whereas the toe box on the CTs is pretty huge. However I still really like this mod, as it cleans up the toe box really well. I wouldn't rate this as an "essential" modification, but it definitely helps and I think that you should all give it a try on your own shoes. I will be doing this on all of my shoes from now on, as I really like it. As an advanced modification technique it really helps to clean up the toe box. I will put in the little tube "spacer" on my shoelaces when I get home. (This spacer goes on the shoelace at the bottom eyelet, and helps to outline the toe box even more.)
I actually can't wait for my next pair of Lavers so I can do this modification on THEM. I simply outgrew my last pair. So my conclusion for this review is that this modification is great and certainly helps. Try it out! Thanks Hood!
