sick 1/3 judging

Post by Jeremy »

Specifically for people who have actually judged these events at tournaments. What procedure did you use? Please give as much detail as you can.

Cheers.

Oh and I'd really, really appreciate it if people only commented on how things were done - not how you think they should be done. I'm not looking for opinions - but for facts!!

being one of the more technically inclined players in Paris I often get called upon to vote for sick 1s. So that's usually how it happens:

- "hey Max, what's sicker a mobius or a blurriest?"
- "well they're both pretty boring and they have similar difficulty.. I guess it'll come down to style / control / cleanliness"..

blah blah...
Personaly I know that uniqueness counts a lot for me. i ask myself "is this a move I've seen hit a million times before?"..

note: I've actually never officialy been judge at a sick 1 / sick 3 comp. But I have unofficially been asked what my thoughts were on certain comps (even some that I participated in).

At ShrEdmonton, for sick3 comps, we had the most advanced players (andrew, brett, kevin) who didn't hit a combo judge the event.

For sick1 judging we ran out of time and just let Kevin decide the placements (Kevin didn't hit a sick1).

In both cases style, difficulty, and execution were taken into account. We also required that the sick1 or sick3 be sealed with at least a hand catch.

I've started writing official rules for sick events and have written up a summary above. Obviously it's most appropriate to comment on official IFPA rules (even in early draft form) at the official IFPA website.

I'd really appreciate comments at that topic. Also if you have any kind of opinion on what the rules for sick events should be this is probably your best opportunity to have an influence - especially if you are not an IFPA member.

All of this is pretty obvious (but it is good that you have formally written it up) and I do agree the combos should be counted but obviously score lower in execution.

The real issue is how will the 6 points be awarded? The events need to be split up into elements that judges should take into account when making decisions, these are some off the top of my head:

sick1
How clean was the execution?
How physically difficult was the set?
How physically difficult was the downtime?
How technically difficult was the set?
How technically difficult was the downtime?
How unique is the trick? (this would be omitted if it's decided common tricks should not be penalised)

These could be summed up with: Execution/Difficulty/Uniqueness.

Sick3
Execution
Bothsidedness
Dificulty/uniqueness of links
Difficultly/uniqueness of each move
Range of concepts used in combo (ie. pixie legover>smear>phonix is low range of uptime concepts and fear>smear>atomsmasher is low range of downtime concepts and is onesided.)

Those need to be formally discussed I think.
