Worlds reports

Post by Anz »

Cameras are not everywhere. Players attending to Worlds should post reports just like some from Euros did, so that people who are not attending have the change to read what's happening.
I know that at least Finns have the opportunity, so do it.

I'm going to Helsinki on monday (I wish I could go earlier...) and will promise to post reports every day then!

The warm ups will start in 2½ hours (at 17:00 local time). Although it rains in Helsinki at the moment I think that they will be held indoors.
Reports should be expected from there as well!!

So the Worlds started. It rained today so we didn't go to Kaivopuisto park as it was planned. We (Finns) went to the Helsinki bus station to wait for the Czech crew to arrive. They arrived and they went to look for a place to stay. So they didn't play footbag today. I think. We didn't see any another foreigners. Then we (me, Lauri, Miika, Juha, Tuomas, Samu, Riku, Mikko and Markus went to play into some tunnel near that bus station. It was a session like any other, no new players. We played 2,5 hours. I hit 5 fearless (Phoenix > Blurry Whirl > Blurry Whirl > Spinning Whirl > PS Whirl). I hope tomorrow is better weather and some foreign players too. Sorry my English.

Yeah. That wasn't so official warm-up but we had fun and that's most important. I didn't know how nice is shredding in a tunnel
Well, as Aleksi said we played few hours and get attention from people (especially drunken people).
There wasn't any really hard player in warm-ups because almost all players in Helsinki (including Vasek and the other Czech crew) went to drink some beer.
I wonder where were the USA's posse. Hopefully they weren't playing in the rain in wet Kaivopuisto park. :?

We went to tunnel because the sport hall was closed. We don't play usually in a tunnel!

Jorden and Scott are the only US players going? Man thats a pretty poor turn out :p We had more players from little New Zealand go to Canada last year than that.

Jorden is not from the US and I am almost certain that there will be more US players than just Scott. Peter Irish, Tuan Vu, Ken Somolinos, Matt Cross, Steve Goldberg. Probably many many others. And there will be some other Canadians at the event too!

Today there was a 3/4 page text on the most popular newspaper (Helsingin Sanomat) of the whole country about Worlds.
A big picture of Felix (looks like he's doing Spinning Symple Swirl or something) and some interviewing of Jukka Peltola (a net player) and Felix.

The text might be avaivable on the internet. Or at least some pictures. Let's see if I can find something.
[EDIT:] No... nothing worth of showing...

Some good shit going down, but lots of big names havent even been playing much yet. I have yet to see Vasek in shred gear, much less playing.

Ive had the chance to shred with a ton of people, and lots of young eurokids going off. Szymon Ners is very impressive.

The best stuff Ive seen so far has been from Felix and jorden. Saw felix hit whirr to ps egg to start a string. surging in gyro mirage clean. Jorden hit pdx flux screw, i think it was legit. long strings. seems like everybody is doing long strings. played a bit with sergei today, hit spinning whirl-vortex-spinning pdx blender. alex strassman hit pixie double switch clean as. foursquare happening, definitely more than last year.

Big bummer of the tournament so far was team japan not showing up yet, becase of a richter 6 quake yesterday which delayed their flight. pretty worried about them, but my mind was eased by emailing with kim. Yacine is also not here, nor is kenny shults.

Worlds rock so far!!!

here are some things I can remember:
- I broke mikko lepistos bike yesterday then he forgave me (I hope) and freestyled a song on matt's mini guitar about it. I blamed felix and so mikko also sang about the 'bad man' felix and about how he jammed my toes in the bike spokes. heheh ooops! (felix didn't really hurt my bike and mikko knew that)

- I played with tina yesterday and she hit toe whirling swirl in the same string that she ended with pdx whirling swirl. she was using symp whirls as filler too.

- I thought manu schmidt was tina's little sister. :P He is amazing and he is DEFINITELY going to be a fucking force. he blurry whirls all over the place and he has the cleanest style in history and he's about 3 feet tall. I saw him hit pdx barrage midstring too.

- I played net with Ken Somolinos and Josh Benham and Benny Eastcoast. It was my first doubles match and it was wicked fun. we even had a rally or two that probably looked totally convincingly like a real net match from a few hundred yards back. at one point the ball rolled away kinda far (as often happens with a rolly polly net bag on smooth ground) and I ran and got it and then hurled it back towards Ken only to realise that I hadn't noticed that he wasn't looking and had no idea there was a rock hard net bag whizzing through the air at his head. I yelled out "KEN KEN KEN!!!" and he spun, spotted it and caught it with exactly zero seconds of room for error. he turned around and saw it when it was like.. 3 feet from smashing straight into his face. 8O  He is faster than time I am pretty sure.
That was a highlight for me for sure. I think I was on the losing net team both times, I think that was purely by coincidence though. :P

- I also saw felix's surging inspinny dooly mirage thing, it was really exciting.

- this energy drink company has sponsored the event and they've provided this totally awesome little scooter things. they are these chubby oversized batteries with handle bars and little tires and people buzz around on them all day with big smiles on their faces. they are a blast to ride.
Though.. I'm not sure why the energy drink has provided us with toy scooters and not any energy drinks. :?

- Team Japan showed up last night! yay! I got to be the guy that delivered the good news to Ken too! :) He seemed really relieved that his boys had made it. heheh and his secret weapon Takumi is here and ready to slay. I can't wait to see his wicked shit in person.

I gotta go shred.

I will write more some time.

What's happening there? :P
I'll be there Friday-Sunday, and I'm so damn excited about it. It sucks that I have to wait for 4 nights before I'll leave and crazy stuff is happening already.

It was great to read an article about footbag in the Helsingin Sanomat. It didn't make it to the Sports pages, but it was the first headline on the "City" pages. Better than nothing I guess.
Headline was something "Footbag kicking is a serious and sweaty sport".
I read the article and one thing there made me laugh out loud:

"...There are not very many girls playing footbag.
- 'Maybe we are too ugly', Zenger wonders."

Then I saw the expression on Felix's face in that big picture where he busts some big trick and it was funny (because it was taken in the middle of the trick). :D
No hard feelings.

I can't believe that we have the Worlds.

Why are people fuzzing about Felix's Surging Ingyro Mirage? :P - I was there when he invented it half year ago with first try

Now I'm here - w00t
I'm staying in Espoo with Aleksi and Lauri Airinen.

Today was a really nice shred going on.
Big names were playing today as well, at least most of them.

Vasek didn't really play, he just played around -- with Superfly Swirls (bs) and stuff like Superfly > Superfly > Superfly > Ripstein > Superfly > Ripstein > Superfly (drop)
Double spinning clipper > Ripstein > rpt x2

I took some pictures with my digicam, but I can't put them online just yet, because Airinen's don't have right kind of USB-cable!
