Marita's Footblog

Post by canadian girl »

Hi....Okay, so I have perused the Footblog's section for much time now, and have had a lot of fun reading everyone else's blogs, and so I have decided it was time to make one of my own.

Also, because I am so new to footbag (well, to playing it anyways) it seemed kind-of silly for me to have a blog, because no one other than my boyfriend (because he has to be nice to me :D ) is going to pretend to be excited about me finally being able to do alternating toe stalls (hehe!) and the fact that I can almost hit pixie consistantly. Because...well....yeah. But, I wanted to have one anyways because I am going to be determined, and I ought to get better very soon.

So, while I completely understand that chances are that no one is going to be interested for a while, please feel absolutely free to give comments (nice ones... :) ) and tips to help me improve!

Hey Marita!

No worries, I don't think either your boyfriend (Erik maybe?) or we
need to pretend to be excited. We all started out like you, and we
know the feeling of hitting something new, no matter what level
you are at. So, enjoy Footbag and have fun!

BTW, did you know that your last name is the german word for 'fruit'?
Probably you did.

So very very VEEEERY long!!!

Post by canadian girl »

Alright, so now onto the reason that I decided to make this blog.

Last weekend Erik came down to Toronto to visit me, and he got to see all his footbag friends, and I hung out with them a bunch too. It was really awesome because I don't really know much about different footbag players or anything, so when Erik told me that Eli Piltz and Caro Bourgeoin were going to come down from Montreal, I was like "Oh, okay, cool. That's nice that they want to meet you." But I didn't understand the BIGNESS of this even until he explained it to me.

Anyways, so everyone was so excited to meet Erik, which I thought was really cool, and it made him so happy, and so thus, my weekend was pretty sweet too. But the thing for me wasn't really seeing all these really good players play (Johnny Suderman, Eli, Caro etc...) because I didn't really know what they were hitting. (Trust me, I am sure that once I understand the moves and Erik tells me what was hit while I was there, I'll be like "What!!?? I witnessed that and didn't even know it???!!")
For me the most exciting thing was meeting Camille and Andrew here in Toronto, as well as seeing how excited everyone is about playing footbag. Watching Camille play was really inspiring to me, because even though I am 5 million times as unadvanced as she is, I thought...."hmmmm, if I work at this, I could possibly be that good" and if I get that good, then I could get even better.... So, watching Camille really inspired me to play. Also because I thought, "Once I get all of the basics down by playing on my own, here is someone that I would actually feel comfortable playing around...."

Wow, this is really long winded....but, meh...whatever, it's my footblog right? So....that was basically my highlight of the weekend, the realization that I want to improve basically. Meeting all those people was great too though! I can't believe how nice everyone is!!! I liked basically everyone tons.

Eli Piltz is really really nice (he definetly knows he is good....but I guess that is to be expected) I really enjoyed talking to him, and not to make him feel old or anything, but he is really "wise" shall we say... you can tell that is you wanted to talk to him about something, he would have a very definitive and straightforward opinion, and it would probably be very helpful. That was my impression of Eli. Also, I felt like....you know when people hug you, and you can tell if they mean it? Well, when he gave me a goodbye hug it felt nice and genuine, which I always like in a person.

Caro is really sweet. I love her style to no end, but that is definetly not the point. She is WAY more shy than I would ever have imagined her to be!!! She didn't really talk much at all, but when she did I liked her a lot, because she was one of the nicest people there.

I felt bad that we didn't hang out with them on their last night, but it most definetly wasn't because we didn't want to. It was just hard becasue I had restrictions...and stuff....anyways...I hope they had a good time though, because they deserved to.

I'm thinking I should cut this short, but I don't want to, so if anyone doesn't want to read it, they just won't read it I guess! I want to write all about what I thought about the past weekend because it is what has motivted me to play more.

Tom Mosher was the most excited guy I have EVER met, it was insanely nice!!!! He has this amazing aura of smiles and laughing and happiness and zest and everything!!! This will probably sound weird, but it seems to me that his parents must be so proud of him, becasue he loves life so much. I think that if I was in a position to be proud of him, I would be, because being that excited about life is just amazing and great and admirable and I love it!! (he also likes The Weakerthans and Dashboard Confessional, and planted trees sometime....I think.....SO, he is in my good books for sure! :D ) I really hope I get to meet him again soon(although he brings out the shyness in me....because he is so excited and outgoing...).

The other people I remember are: Johnny Suderman (I love that name, it's so much fun to say!), Adam Dexter, Jarrett, Billy, Joyce, Paul Toews, Jon Haber.....I know I am missing a ton of people, becasue there were a bunch of them there....sorry!!!
Anyways, I really liked Johnny Suderman too (I gathered that he is amazing at footbag, which I already knew, but apparently he hit a bunch of crazy stuff at this session too....which I wouldn't know) but he is also really really nice and humble and sweet. I really liked him. He was very nice. He thanked me for buying the pop and chips, and it was one of those genuine things again. I felt like it was a very genuine thank-you, and I like it when people are honest and genuine.
Adam Dexter I didn't talk to hardly at all, but he seemed very laid-back and nice also. He seemed to really like Erik, which was cool, and I wished that he had come over and talked to Erik and I when we were just sitting around watching, and he was watching to learn (he said). I hope he had fun too, because he seems nice.
As for Billy, Jarrett, and Camille's friend Joyce, the only things I really could gather about them was that they seem very good at footbag to me.
Oh! And Paul Toews and Jon Haber! I forgot them. Ummm, Paul Toews seems very intertesting....I don't know how to describe the impact I got from him. He seems really really cool, I don't know. The thing that stuck in my mind was that Andrew said that he was the "car salesman" of the bunch (a good debater etc) and he looks so far from a car salesman, but somehow that fits with him persona, he seems like he was a lot of good things to say. And Jon Haber I didn't talk to much, but he seemed very low-key and nice at dinner.

Wow, no one is going to want to read that whole analyses, :D

Anyways, so in the basement of my residence, we recently got a fitness room (room with a bunch of exercise equipement) and so I am excited because I live in the 3rd floor of a mansion (yeah...I know...hehe :) ) and it has hardwood floors that make much noise when I try to play on them. So I figure that a room in the basement with concrete floors, that is already designated for athletics, is perfect for improving in!!!! So that's my plan. That's what I was excited about and what I wanted to tell everyone, and thus the blog, and the long winded post about my GREAT weekend!!!!

So, now, I am going to go improve in the basement! Bye! :D

Thanks Bjoern!!! That's really nice of you! (Yes Erik Chan is my boyfriend) I will definetly still be as excited as ever when I end up doing 4 tow stalls in a row, trust me!! Just wanted to make it clear that I am really new, so that people would know what to expect. And yeah....I definetly know that my last name means fruit...great isn't it?

The best part is that I used to have the last name Pepper. So I went from being Marita Pepper, to Marita Fruit essentially. The food names just like me I guess. :)

Don't you dare think that people won't be excited about your toe stalls!

I love teaching people that important first step because it often causes the 'one more try' loop. Once you're onemoretry-ing you are hooked!

I e-mailed the paragraph you wrote about me to my parents, it was so kind, thank you!

That workout area setup you have sounds perfect! you should start training and get crazy good as a surprise for Erik's next birthday.

You are so fortunate to have other shredders nearby, I definately think you should start playing with Joyce and Camille, try to chase one down!

I'm glad you had so much fun last weekend, it was a pleasure meeting you!

oh my gosh!! thanks tom, you are so nice!! I will definetly keep "onemoretrying"!! hehe.... Well, I really really have to get some stuff done for school, so I definetly won't be able to play with anyone for a few weeks. I will only be able to play alone when I am sick of doing homework (as a break you know). But maybe after I have all my scary tests then I will be able to think about playing more and getting together with Camille.

I don't really know what to say that you e-mailed what I said to your parents....your welcome I guess!!! :D

Yeah, I hope to get better, and then when I come home for Christmas I will be able to hit some new stuff. I wasn't going to tell him the things that I hit, so that I could enjoy seeing the look of amazement on his face, but now I suppose it is unavoidable since I have a footblog.

warm fuzzy feelings.... :D off to do chemistry homework!!

oh crap it all! :) I closed the forum, and went over to my bookshelf, got out my books, and decided I was actually going to study, and then I sat down on my bed. I put my books down beside me, and out of the corner of my eye I saw the footbag Erik gave me a year ago (the only one I have, that I play with). I had a plan to work, and then I thought in my head "I want lavers I want lavers I want Lavers!!!" and grabbed my footbag, and just had to try again!!!!!! Crap, I was JUST about to study too!!!!!!

You know I read half of your long post before I caught the whole fact that I've met you before!!! :D sweet. I saw you practicing with erik...I can't hit pixies like you do. and thats not BS. I wanted to suggest for you to try a mirage and then I thought "duh not only is she getting pointers from her BF privately, her BF is 9x better than I." but I am all about the mirages so i'd love to read your footblog and read that you hit one.

P.S. It's your footblog and you can write all that you want to...cause you know Erik, Mosher and I are going to read it all.

I really enjoyed that! It's nice to read other peoples blogs, because it helps you realize things that you normally wouldn't. And Marita, you can post about as many toe stalls as you want, because I'm with Adam, and I like hearing about progress.

Maybe one time when you're finished with all of your tests and everything, we can have a mini jam again with some of the people from TO, I'd really enjoy that.

I got to watch my Marita hit 3 alternating toe stalls for the first time on our webcams last night. It was really great to see how excited she was. She hit three in a row a few times and it was really great. I think she hit it from her flipside, too. I've also been asking her to try mirage because she can hit pixie pretty easily. But she was never really playing much until the past couple of days where she's suddenly playing a lot. I can't wait to see her hit 4 toe stalls, mirage and maybe pixie back to back!
I showed her a clip of me from when I first started today to make her understand that everybody goes from doing only the basics. (http://www.hackrifice.com/marita/chan04.mpg)
Determination is all you really need to get really good really fast in footbag and Marita definately has that. She has so much to do with school but she definately has the potential to be a great and upcoming shredita! :)

wow!! thanks Johnny!! That means a lot to me! Well, I will probably never be done the work (it's university, it's like the neverending flow of dread and anxiety and stress), but sometime that everyone has a chance, I would love to designate it as a weekend to get together again! That would be so great! Anyways, I am going to say a bit about my great day, and then get sleep.

I did so much physical activity today, it's CRAZY! (Well so much considering that I have been just sitting on my ass doing schoolwork for so long, with very minimal strenuous activity). After I made my blog, I went downstairs and played footbag for a bit. The room, wasn't open, so I played in the laundry room for a bit. I didn't do anything noteworthy there. So I came back upstairs because the maintenance man kept talking to be about laundry in broken English....and it was interesting. So I figured, whatever, the people downstairs can just deal with it then! So I played in my room.

I worked on improving my balance and alternating toe stalls, because for some reason this ballet dancer has horrible balance, and I have a lot of trouble just keeping my form good enough to keep on catching the bag before I lose the proper form. So anyways, I worked on toe stalling the bag, and then just holding my leg there, and moving it up and down and around, until I fell over. :)

Last night I was playing with Erik using webcams, and I tried the alternating toe stalls for the first time. At first I couldn't do it, then I got two, then three, and by that time, (it took me a lot of perservering to get that far) my legs were all jelly-y, so I stopped. So today I aimed for getting 3 alternating toe stalls consistantly, and getting it to 4.

And I did....it made me very happy. :D

Anyways, I hit a bunch of pixies and ATWs because I can, and then I decided to go swimming! Now, you don't understand! I LOOOOOOVE swimming. I am a lifeguard and a swimming instructor, I have been a speed swimmer, endurance swimmer for a shirt while (the irony) and a synchronized swimmer. I LOVE swimming about as much as you all love footbag....well, maybe not that much. but anyways. So I went swimming too. I think I swam about a kilometer, because my friend and I didn't want to push it (because we haven't done laps for a while). So that felt really good.

Then I got home, and after having dinner and stuff, I decided I felt like playing again, even though I had thought I was done for the day. So I played some more, and just had a repeat of earlier (4 toe stalls....not 5 yet...but I will!!! :D , and pixies and ATWs).

And lots of kind words from people, which made me happy. And NOW, I am going to sleep! Good night everyone!!!!!!

Tomorrow, 5 toe stalls, and mirage! that's the plan anyways....although I have school.... anyways, night for real now!

I had a discussion with a friend once and we decided that really the only other people that would have the same kind of leg circling muscles as footbaggers would be swimmers and thus that is faaaaanntastic that you do so much of that! I bet the reason you can atw and pixie so well is partly due to your having those specific muscles. Of course, your straight-up determination is what put the bag into the equation.

I think I'm gonna go pay a visit to your challenge thread!

Yeah I remember I went on summer vacation with Marita's family and we had access to a pool and so we swam a lot because I read that it was good to do flutterkick swimming for my injury so I did lots of that and Marita got me to do the "eggbeater" and it was neat because it was working the same muscles that I used to do atomic-style moves (eggbeater in footbag!!)

Hmmm, I don't have a Challanges thread....but I think that's okay for now, I need to just challange myself to get better at the things that I need to work on. Then once I feel confidant that I have some good solid basics, then I will make a challange thread, and I'll let you all know.

By the way, thanks Tom, for saying that Erik and I are a good match...I suppose that is a good thing :D (I mean, if Erik's so great, then by process of association, that makes me SUPER DUPER PRIMA too! ) haha, naw, just joshing. Anyways....I just woke up a bit ago, and the forum makes me very excited now....

Hmmm, I think I am going to play footbag and swim again today. I am going to make myself a list of things to do and when to do them, and wow you all with my busy schedule, (even though I probably won't get it all done), but maybe if I make an organized plan things will happen!

The Plan:

it's 10:30 am right now, so....
--10:30-10:45 Make list
--10:45-11:15 Clean the messy piles in my room, to actually let the floor have some air (clean room)
--11:15-11:45 Get ready to go, wash face, brush teeth etc....
--11:45-12 Walk to some random building where I am going to be a guinea pig/lab rat for school credit........
--12-1:10 Be a guinea pig/lab rat for school credit (oh! bring books marita!)
--1:10-1:45ish Eat lunch (hopefully the experiment is only one hour...)
--2-4 Calculus class with my crazy chinese professor. I have this theory that they are all chinese and they don't speak English. ANd if they do, they have a thick THICK accent and you can't understand them unless they write too. At least mine is very funny.
--4-5 PLAY some FOOTBAG!!! Hit mirage and do 5 consecutive tow stalls. Period.
--5-6 Dinner
--6-7 Swim (?) Do I have time??? Maybe I should study instead? Oh crap, this list sucks.

Meh, from 6-11 I will swim sometime and homework sometime and call Erik sometime..... Wow, that was pointless. Okay, it's ummm....wow, only 10:33, I have 12 minutes before I need to clean my room! I will play some footbag. My sister is not going to appreciate this though, cause she is still asleep....

Okay, bis balt meine kleine footbaggers....

I didn't actually get to play today, but I had so many new and interesting experiences that I had to write them here!! (even though they are such girly things, that no one will really want to hear about.... :D but whatever, I'm gonna tell you all!

The most recent and crazy was this: I just went to the mall and my friend and we were looking around and we were so tired and grumpy so we were about to go home, and this woman came up to us. She was like, "can I ask you a question? Do you live in the downtown area?" and stuff.
Anyways, so she said she was from a spa called Essence Spa, and that they were giving away these promotional packages to 20 people, and you got these 5 packages for the price of $285, for $50. So it sounded like a really good deal, but you needed to pay her the $50 right there, by cheque, cash or credit. So we all thought about it and she tried to convince us, and of course, because we are small town girls, the biggest thing we thought of was like, "is it clean? and what happens if we pay you and we don't like the place etc..."
So anyways, the thought crossed my mind as to, "how do we know if this place is real..." and so I called the number discreetly, and they had a voicemail for an Essence Spa. Anyways, so we each gave her $50, and she left. Then I got all worried and began to wonder, is it really real?????

I am going to cut this long drawn out story very short. So, I got everyone else panicked and we tried to look it up in the phone book, and there was no spa.
We called Erik and asked him to check it out on the internet, and the address was for a Hoola Something Somethign Restaurant.
So we asked people if they had ever heard of it -- they hadn't. So we are all thinking "we got scammed for $150, and we are so dumb..." (well, it was unvbeliveably irresponsible, I mean, there was NO WAY to know if it was real unless we had been there before. It was SUCH a stupid thing to do. So we definetly learned a lesson from that. Never, EVER give money to ANYONE EVER that you don't know. EVER. I really really knew that already though, she was just so compelling. I definetly am not street smart. At least not that way, and I have definetly become better at living in a big city tonight.

Anyways, so the 3 of us took the Subway all around, trying to find this place, because we HAD to know if it was real. We got on and off so many subways, but it was funny, we realized that if you are lost and are a girl, you can ask the Subway Controller people where to go, and then just come back and say you didn't find it , and can you go back on with your transfer. We did the whole trip with one fare, there and back :D !

Anyways, loooooooong story, we found it, and all rejoiced infront of this closed spa in the middle of Toronto. Very very interesting night. I am such an idiot.....I didn't think at all, and I would NEVER ever do this again, but some higher power was working in our favor, and it turns out to be okay.

I also was a test subject for a psychology experiment, and I think I got all the logic puzzle things right excet for like 2, and I am happy about that. COOL! Anyways, very interesting day! G'night!!!!!

I admit it. We were never seen together once the whole weekend. I kept saying I had to go back to her place and see her and I would show up as Marita without myself. It was all just a ruse to get people to shred with me in Toronto and meet Johnny Suderman and Jorden Moir. Too bad for me that Jorden caught on with his stunning mental prowess and refused to be a part of my heinous plot! I will now go into hiding and people will forget about me and my imaginary girlfriend over time, I can only hope and pray. The gig is up, Dear!
