i really don't see the need to "set the standard". why limit the game by saying "there are a hand full of tricks that you aren't allowed to hit after a while. sorry, but that's the deal." i personally don't think that's a good idea. i play guiltless (i absolutly hate this term) and tripless because i like to push my self, not because it's the standard of play today.
ericksonj wrote:It would just get really irritating if I saw someone always go for 200 contacts with some 3s and kicks and some 2s and 1s. I would get pretty tired of playing in a circle with him/her.
yeah, i agree here, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to play that way does it? i guess i wouldn't play in their circle for too long, but who's to say they can't play that way? i don't think that any one has the right to.

one of my favorite players to watch play is franck rémy from paris (he has a part in Sick 03 for those of you who haven't seen him play). i lve watching him playe because he just goes, he's not there to impress anyone, he throws down loads of 2's even some 1's but i think his style is awesome, and i doubt anyone else in freestyle has as free-er style or more fun than franck.[/off topic]

and in holding with the topic, i often find my self using blurry for stepping far and stepping paradox. i know it's not technically correct, but people understand what you mean, even if it is suggesting the trick gets an extra add.

Yes I'll agree with Andrew here, Frank is the free-est freestyler I know. He'll throw in some hard stuff IF HE WANTS TO and then do clipper or toes or whatever IF HE WANTS TO. He plays for himself and that's very respectable.

I tried endlessly to tell him about the whole guiltless concept and not throwing in clippers or whatever but I don't think he really cares.

I also don't think 2 adds break a string, doing a legover, clipper, bubba, reverse swirling toe, mirage is often a lot stylyer and better looking than seeing the 20th butterfly in a run.

Back on topic:
I also go by the "blurry is stepping paradox [something]" rule.

I believe that originaly a move was Blurry is it contained a "In > Op In" part, and that Blurrier and Blurriest was named before the standard was developed and that Blurry now referes to stepping paradox.
BUT! I would call it stepping far legover, but a blurry pickup/guay.

Somebody said no Double Hip Pivot when doing Illusion - You can do Illusions very differently. If you do them leggy, then no, there is almost no doublehippivot, but if you do it hippy, you'll feel it!

Actually, I think that blurriest and blurrier is confusing terminology. Blurr seems to be a root slang word for blurry, which normally means either stepping paradox or stepping far. Blurrier means neither, and blurriest isn't paradox in itself. So its all confusing. Blurry MEANS Stepping Far, whether it be paradox or not. Thats my definition. If someone says stepping whirl, its stepping same whirl. If someone says blurry whirl, its stepping far(paradox) whirl.

I actually realized that the reason I think barflys are harder than paradon is because I never plant my dexing leg during barfly.

This got totally way off topic though.

However, remaining off topic, I believe that, though while a bubba is a 2 add, thusly ending a guiltless run, if someone wants to throw in a bubba, why the heck not? Its not like the world will end, and if that person does not pass the bag, he will die and everyone else watching.

Its obvious...if someone uses a bunch of two adds, either they like 2 adds, or they are strictly a tiltless player. If someone uses a lot of 3 adds but maybe an occasional two add, again, they may like some 2 adds (mosher for instance a while ago) or they are just becoming guiltless. If someone uses all 3 adds, obviously they are guiltless and they don't like using 2 adds. Its all a matter of what someone wants to do or what they are limited to. IF a guiltless player uses a 2 add accidently as a bail, then IF they feel like passing it and IF they think that that 2 add shouldn't have occured, by all means go ahead and end your run.

However, if someone likes to use occasional two adds intentionally, does it really matter that they used that two add?

I agree with what you said about the blurry thing, Chris...

And about the guitless thing...there is another option...it's not like you have to be either all guiltless or tiltless...one day soon I'll be good enough to be all guiltless. I hit alot of 3's (ducking mirage, butterfly, osis, blurry (stepping far  ) legover, pdx mirage, pdx illusion, whirl, and more) but to link those 3's I have to do some 2's. I think having a standard is great but it's not imperitive i don't think. I think smoothness in the main key.

Tricks of the Trade, Vol. 1 came out in '91. The term "Stepping" was not invented until something like '95 or '96. (It was sort of a cooperative thought between Scott Davidson and I. One could probably be dig up this info off one the old listserve posts on www.footbag.org.)

This means that moves like blurrier and blurriest (which were named prior to the term "stepping") don't make as much sense in today's context. So, let's rename them! (Just kidding). I guess this issue is complicated somewhat in that there are moves that are blurry which have the full blur component, such as blurry torque and whirl.

Knowing the history makes understanding the terminology easier.

Peace.

P.S. TOTT1 is now finally on DVD .

ericksonj wrote: Guiltless players don't throw bubbas because bubbas are too easy. throw clip set same side eggbeater or same side flail instead. I would agree that bubba is probably one of the hardest standard two add move, but if I saw it in a guiltless player's run I would think the person messed up and should pass. I mean we have to set the standard somewhere or else people would be kicking the bag, hitting some clippers, going into rubberman then kicking it some more. It would just get really irritating if I saw someone always go for 200 contacts with some 3s and kicks and some 2s and 1s. I would get pretty tired of playing in a circle with him/her.
i think that all of this just depends on the player. I can go guiltless, tripless, hit a couple fives and sixes, but some moves at "low difficulty" i still struggle with. If i am doing a tripless run and throw in a bubba, i'm going to be stoked because i suck at bubbas. it's called freestyle for a reason so if the person kicking chooses freely to hit a move no matter what difficulty it is i think it should be allowed. if they are forced to pass because of a move they chose to hit, the "freestyle' concept doesn't really apply that much. The add system is screwed up anyway so why get mad at a person for doing a lower add. freestyle does not equal adjusting your game so your game is completely run aaccording to what this add system entails (guiltless, tripless, fearless). but these are just my views. feel free to disagree.

and so i'm still on topic: blurry=stepping paradox
