Symposium Whirl
CLIP > (NO PLANT WHILE) OP WHIRL [BOD][DEX] >> OP CLIP [XBD][DEL]
http://www.hackrifice.com/moves/4sympwhirl.wmv

Hi everyone,

I really want to learn Symp. Whirls. I worked on my Whirls in the last weeks and they are quite consistent now. My problem is after I set the bag for the Symp. Whirl my dexing leg just goes up and down and there is no nice circular motion around the bag. Any tips?
Btw. I started to practise Clippers without planting the clipper leg and jumping around wit the support leg I gues that drill will help me with symp. Whirls... or ? :)

Basic symp whirls are deceptively easy if you have a well balanced clipper.

-stand in a clipper stall
-using your quads extend your support knee to jump. this will set the bag, you don't need to raise your clipper foot to set. It shouldn't go much higher than knee height
-while you're in the air and the bag is floating using your hamstrings pull your support heel towards your ass to get your dex leg over the bag
-with your quads push your support leg back down past the bag to dex and catch the clipper. The whole time your clipper foot should just be hanging ready to catch the clipper. It just moves slightly out of the way for the dex and comes back.

Basically just work on the jumping part and try to make the bag float from your jump. You should be able to figure it out from there.

edit: oops I didn't read your post well enough

To get a more circular motion you could try focussing on relaxing your entire dexing leg (glutes too) when you're doing the dex. If you're keeping it tense it's not going to move as freely.

watch how Vasek does his. There is no set, he just bends his support leg (which is also the dex leg), then springs off it to start the dex. as the dex starts, the bag comes up just a few inches off the foot. practice the jump without the bag. Try not to move your upper body too much, just keep the whole thing small and easy.

So, practice getting that little jump without the bag. Once your thigh can easily lift your body off the ground, the bag will just come off your foot as you start the dex.

Hope that helps. If not, say so and I'll see if there's anything else going on in my head... I just learned these on my flipside, I know how frustrating they can be.

TIP:

you might try supporting your body weight with your arms by standing between two counter tops so that you can take away the whole gravity element from the trick. If you do this, dont use the bag, this method would allow you to train the circular dexes part, which seems to be what worries you.

Thanks everyone!!! Your tips are really helpfull.
I think I can fix the dexing motion easily.
Keeping the clipper leg at the same place is giving me a hard time. Any suggestions ? :)

Yea, the trick is to not set the bag very high at all, just mostly timing. it kinda helps them look more clean if you kind of extend your clipper foot back a little bit. that way you have a much nicer dexing window and can make a wider dex. My symp whirls are getting decent, my problem is sometimes my dex isnt the cleantest. like its more towards my toe and kinda iffy. but probably like every 4 or 5 i do i get one realy nice dex and the others are alright.

last session had, i almost hit a paradox mirage out of my symp whirl. it was pretty sweet. i was getting them pretty high. anyone have any tips on how to set your symp whirls higher?

I noticed there's nothing written on .org about symp whirl.

I seem to be having issues with keeping balanced at the end of the move, and struggle with hitting anything out of it.

Any tips?

Tips for symp whirl:

Practice doing it without the bag, and see how vertical/horizontal your dexes are. If they are a bit of a vertical motion, then you have to train it so that it becomes like slightly horizontal, just like normal whirl.

A good way to practice the above is to stand with your hands on 2 tables, so you can float in the air...and practice it like this.

Other tips:
- Set low, emphasies on lowering your clipper foot when you jump upwards for the dex. The clipper doesnt set the bag up. The Jump does.

- think of dexing forward a little at the start, Although this might be a bit risky, i suggest you should try this using the 2 arms on a table method first.

-Practice and practice clipper set whirls
- bend your knee down before you set for the trick, so you can get all the momemtum.

I remember Matt Cross giving great tips somewhere in this "Trick Tips" section.

Good luck, your symp whirls look clean by the way when i saw one Wink

I'll try to be a little more specific.

I don't 'set' the bag as much as it is set during the start of the dex.
The set is quite low, usually just above the knee, which I think is important for being able to do the dex without having to jump too high to get there.
My Dexes are clean - there's no problem with the motion.
I find I'm usually leaning foreward at the completion of the move, be it from landing the symp, or just my style/form, I'm not sure which.
In most cases I have little or no controll of the bag after, bailing to a sloppy and rushed osis, or toe.

So, in review, the problem is with my balance at the end of the move, and my controll of the bag.

Does anyone have any more tips - things I can keep in mind during my next session?

I found that it really helps to practice this move on a trampoline. It takes a lot of leg strength. Practicing on a tramp makes it easy to do the motion. You dont need to use a bag just practice the motion. I hope this helps

if balance is your problem, then practice them with an emphasis on balance; i.e., freeze the symp whirl, using your arms/upperbody to stay balanced. Once you can freeze a symp whirl, hit the move and set the bag up while maintaining proper balance. If you miss the stall but attain a balanced position, then you have succeeded. If you hit the stall but cant freeze the whirl and you fall over, you have failed. If you hit the whirl and you attain a balanced position post-whirl, you have succeeded in all aspects of the move.

We all had balance problems on one move or another- clipper for example. So what did you do? You practiced achieving the correct balance/posture for hitting clipper. The same applies here. You need to practice landing symp whirls in a position that allows you to be completely balanced, with your weight evenly distributed.

On this trick problems with balance is a problem with your set. Do not set it away from your body, dont set it in front of your body and dont set it behind you instead set it right next to you. Before you even try this trick, think it through. IT doesnt have to be high at all. If it sets to high you will know. I see alot of people do the dex and land then they just sit there in clipper position for a while until it comes back down. This makes it harder to balance and set out of. Watch vaseks o5 worlds routine and do it just like that. He keeps it low, and precise. if your clipper touches the ground it makes the trick (any trick for that matter) 20% harder.

Is it better for a lower to set to kind of jerk your clippering leg out of the way as soon as you set it? It looks like a lot of people do this, should I?

I'm still trying to grasp this move.

very low set, very low jump. Do everything small. It is not necessary to move your clipper foot, but if thats your style i guess its not a bad thing.

I think the key with this move, and the variants of it is making the move feel effortless. When you get it right, the impact is minimal and the effort feels pretty insignificant. If it doesn't feel like that, I would suggest you need to keep working on your technique with that in mind. 10 consecutive ps whirls should be an achievable goal if you get the energy level right. Essentially you conserve energy by not jumping too high, pushing your energy in the jump straight down (rather than across) and cushioning the landing. Once I could hit the move easily, I increased my technique by practising the action without the bag a lot, until I felt like it was really easy.

the trick to setting it is to not set it at all. when i do it i jump with it still on clipper and the jump naturally sets it just high enough. thats just the way i learned though. cause if you set it then you can really only do the move as the bag is traveling down, this way your doing the whirl when the bag is at peak height or whatever.

I just worked up a ton of quad strength, pretty sure my form sucks, but squats helped me. Also making sure the clipper is far enough behind you is essential imo.

bringing an Old (2007) post to life.

i just read everything and there is nothing for me there... so ill try to explain what i think i do and id like to have advice, because whirls, for me, is easier than butterfly :?

everytime i try this move, the set goes inward and i cant dex at all even if the dex is circular and right under me as its supposed to be but the bag isnt there ...

i already tried to jump on the side (to follow the bag) but i couldnt hit it anyway and id rather doing it clean and the way its supposed to be made.

i dont think my clipper foot set the bag because i know that it shouldn't be

any help ??

I was having the same problem as you Julien. When I started to drill this trick I figured that the bag was setting into me because I was setting it with my crank and my clipper not my dexing leg.

When you start to work this again, try to exaggerate the set. Jump off you support leg for the dex. Don't do anything with your clipper except drop it down after the jump. This should help with setting the bag relatively straight up for the trick. After awhile the set will get higher for it doesn't seem like you are rushing the clipper to catch it.

Hope this helps some.

You're going to be dexing higher than clipper set symp whirl, and doing it fully downtime, so make sure your leg is plenty strong from clipper set symp whirl.

Hop off the set, and turn towards the bag so your knee is inside of it. Jump, and raise your knee, using the power of that hop in the beginning. Once you have your knee up to where the bag is, it plays just like a regular symp whirl; dex, and make sure to cushion on the catch.
