Toe Whirls and Pdx Whirls

Post by sNale »

SET>OP IN [DEX]>OP CLIP [XBD][DEL]

I know there is already a Whirl thread but this one is dedicated these two versions of Whirl. I can do Toe Whirl fairly good by now. But I want to ask you guys how and where to set the bag best? And how to turn your hip?

E.g. would you set a toe whirl in front of you or rather to the side? And how high should the set for pdx whirl be? How straight or diagonal should the bag go? I appreciate any tips :)

i was opening the trick tips forum, and I thought to myself, someone's going to ask how to do blurry whirl, so I started thinking of ways to tell someone how to do downtime whirls. Then, the page loaded and this was the only unread thread... weird. I'm footbag psychic.

assuming your whirls are under control (to the Reader, not you, sNale)... To start, practice by doing downtime whirls where you set the bag up to your rib cage and do the whirl while the bag falls. This will teach you to do whirl dexes fast enough to do them from your toe or paradox.

With toe set whirls, I prefer to set straight up, and as the bag is rising, step to the side a little bit so that the bag falls into my clipper area, as opposed to turning my body so that the bag falls into my clipper area.

with paradox whirls, I prefer to set at an angle, and also turn towards the bag a little bit. if you set at too much of an angle with pdx whirl, it will make the bag more likely to roll off your foot because of the direction in which the bag is travelling as it hits your foot.

make sure not to plant on paradox whirls, skool your downtime whirls, then get the pdx ones back to back.

Does this help? anything else need clarification?

This post will be hardly informative.

I just wanna say Matt couldn't be more right about practicing downtime whirls. He's right!!!

I've been messing around with pdx whirl for over a month and still it's not consistent, even though my regular whirl HAS been over half a year. Then just yesterday I figured out the importance of having a downtime whirl for pdx whirl. I can be so retarded at times.

As to the timing for pdx whirl: when your dex leg is at its zenith ( :? ) and starting to come down, change feet before you touch the ground. So you'll be off the ground with both feet for a split second. Make sense? Good luck-------------

Paradox Whirl

I've done a little search and I think there's no topic on paradox and paradox symposium whirl yet.

Any pointers? Thanks in advance!

set, turn, whirl.

Pivot into the setting direction to get the bag in the whirl position.

listen to tsiangkun, the pivot is key, it gets the bag in position, and puts your knee in a situation where there is not as much stress on it.

Stay away until it's so easy that you do it without having to practice it. It's a dangerous move to practice and damaging for your joints in the long term. Make sure you practice on days when you feel light because you've lost wait recently, only then practice it.

I am no master of pdx whirls but my guess would be have bloody awesome whirls way before you try pdx and have bloody awesome DOWNTIME symp whirls before you try ps whirl.

Thanks guys!

Will keep the pivot etc. in mind. Also the downtime symp whirl seems like a good idea.
In fact, I've had regular whirl consistently for almost a year now so I figured it's time to move on. Paradox whirl is right there on days when I 'feel light' (interesting formulation, Lon!) but PS whirl is a bad mutha... :(

I'll get to it tonight!

Ok this is how I got to paradox whirls:

School toe whirls like crazy. This way you get used to doing the whirling dex downtime. A good drill for this is toe whirl > pdx mirage > repeat.

For me PS Whirls were easier. For these I would school symp. whirls to get your strength up. Toe whirls also help with these.

When you set the bag from clipper, immediately put your setting foot down and pivot slightly toward the bag. Then do the whirl and make sure you land on your toes and you are stable. PS Whirls are very dangerous if you don't land properly.

Hey Wim!
It was cool shredding with you last saturday.
I had asked Ryan Mulroney ages ago for tips on pdx and PS whirl, and he told me that for most whirl tricks (spinning, pdx, ps, gyro) you want the bag "just here". "Here" being to your side, waist high, very slightly behind you.

To get the bag in that spot for pdx whirl you need to PIVOT as Tsiangkun pointed out.
The PS version demands a bit more: different footwork, different set height, more energy. I should be back in Brussels shortly, I'll try and show you then.

bonne chance!

rather than pivoting - I move sideways for pdx moves - especially whirls.

So set straight and as you set do a little sideways hop. This takes the bag across your body so it's in position for an easy whirl.

Drilling pickups definitly will help your whirls.

I learnt and mastered PS whirl well before I learnt symp whirl. PS whirl - set the bag up and quickly plant the dexing foot - but close to where you set the bag up so you're still moving across like a pdx whirl. Don't jump too high but rather lift your knee up - it should feel nice and controlled. You really have heaps of time for this move so you don't need to rush it. make sure you start the dex early though. Try to bend your knee as you land to absorb the shock.

Ahhhhhh thanks again guys. If I put together all these tips, I'm there in no time! :)

Actually, my flip paradox whirls are improving already. For PS whirl, I'm really counting on you, Max.

I practiced downtime whirls for the first time at my last session, in an effort to improve my Paradox Whirls, and i felt an instant improvement in them! The downtime whirling really helps the speed of the dex i think. Also turning the hip is good, i wasnt sure if it was acceptable to turn your hips like that but it would seem so. I guess Blurry Whirl would be different though? Because you cant really step>turn>dex>stall can you?

if you've ever seen Chad D link blurry whirls, then youve seen a blurry set, wherein he steps and then turns toward the side he sets from (i.e., from a left foot clipper, he turns to the right).

Wim, I think that the key to becoming great at pdx anything is to school the speed with which you can set the bag from clipper and start your dex(es) for the pdx move. For example, when hitting pdx dlo you can do 2 things: 1) set high and wait for the bag to get above the height of your legs so that your legs wont hit them when you start your dexes, or 2) set from clipper and quickly start your dexes while the bag is on the way up.

I think 2 is the only way to go, especially if you ever want to hit anything our of the pdx move. The amount of time that you have after finishing a pdx dlo as described in the 2nd method (above) is so great that you can basically hit any toe set out of it.

Like I said tho, it takes practice to be able to start the dexes early in the move and still set the bag from clipper with adequate control. I considermyself to be very good at ps whirl, and the reason I am good at it is because I can clipper set and then be in the air for the ps whirl as the bag is reaching its peak. Most people wait till the bag peaks to start their jump. This is the difference between people who can simply hit pdx moves, versus those are good at pdx moves and who can link out of them easily.

Learn to speed up the initiation of your dexes in relation to the timing of your set.

You're absolutely right. I've heard that argument before and it is really fundamental, but I somehow forgot about it.

Still, I've been trying to do the dex in pdx whirl (almost) uptime lately and it really helps! Also your hint on PS whirl sounds interesting. On my flipside in particular, I always have the feeling that I can't get enough 'altitude' for the dex. Thinking of the dex as quasi-uptime might give a totally different feel.

Will try that later today!
Cheers

Actually you don't really want to dex the bag with your calf, you want to dex with your shin. I've "studied" Vasek's whirls, which he is awesome at, and have come up with some tips on the form he uses.

1. You want your hips usually at a 90 degree angle to your torso.
2. Your shin pointed downwards.
3. It's best if your dexing foot is turned inward a bit.
4. You want to set the bag as straight as possible and turn to dex the bag.

It's been a while but thanks again for the tips. I didn't really drill toe or pdx whirls but I use them more in runs now. I thought about how I do Toe Whirls: e.g. left foot toe set - a little bit towards my left foot clipper area (clipper area is cool :)) then I turn my hip towards the bag and dex it when it's coming down. I also set it pretty close to my body.
Sounds like a good methode or?

P.S. I recently hit Toe set symposium whirl :) That's such a cool trick!
