Wim: there are a LOT of downtime components :)

he main ones are the 4 dexes (mir, illusion, pixi, pickup), drifter, torque, dlo, eggbeater, blender, barrage, downdoubles, whirl, butter, swirl

some harder ones:
double swicth, double pickup, grifter, flux, barroque, flurry, torquescrew, mofly, janiwalker (or so I've heard), butterfly swirl, whirling swirl, down double swirl...

argh actually the list is very long, then there's the symps then the rakes, the swirling / gyro / spinning varioations (like mobius which is now considered 'downtime' I think)...

Anyway just getting the main ones down (listed at the top) is quite an accomplishment.

Oh and BIG props on omelette BS, that's a hard move.

Shit! You're right!
From that 'basics' list, only eggbeater and swirl keep eluding me. For the sake of clarity: I didn't mean to say I can actually hit all those other tricks downtime, but just that I can do them, and that in time I hope to be able to squeeze in some sets before them. :)
some harder ones:
double swicth, double pickup, grifter, flux, barroque, flurry, torquescrew, mofly, janiwalker (or so I've heard), butterfly swirl, whirling swirl, down double swirl...
I wasn't even remotely thinking about the 'harder ones'! (Although they're inspiring, I must say)

Mobius is considered downtime now? 8O That's horrible!

Still, thanks for clearing that up for me!

No actual shred-news this time. The weather has been EXTREME the last few weeks! First it was +30°C for over a week, and now it's been raining like crazy for days. I hope I can jump outside for a kick later today
I have my last exam tomorrow and getting physical the day before always helps.

yeah!

I've seen :
- spinning mobius
- diving mobius
- stepping mobius ("timber wulf" I think)
- pixie mobius ("Johnny Wodka"?)
- fairy mobius
- atomic mobius ("irish cream")

maybe some others..

not sure if nuclear mobius has been hit or swirling mobius either.

Oh yeah, I should have known this. Honza does some of those in the telocvicna (sp?) 'big trick session'.

Haha, that's funny! I totally forgot about the previous post, but I accidentally footed mobius yesterday... huhuh.

I met up with (part of) the Brussels crew + Max yesterday. Max gave me some really helpful pointers on PS whirl. It turns out that my flipside has once again overtaken my strongside :?

But the absolute highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly playing a bit of doubles with Max. Doubles is fun!

He showed me some basic stuff (I mean: basic for him, but all the more confusing for me!). Dude! The key is to really focus on your own legs, not on the other guys'; you can't control those anyway. This may sound logical, but it took me some time to figure that one out. After that, even the most basic flow is pure fun.

Still, sometimes Max had to repeat stuff over and over. The funny thing is that I understood what he was saying, but I didn't manage to visualise it :? , which is key for me if I wanna master something. Perhaps I was too tired.

The advantage of doubles is that to spectators everything looks twice as hard.
--------------------------------------
Shit, I should update this blog more often. I had at least two more sessions between the previous post and this one, but I remember little about them.

Oh yeah, one of them was short but satisfying, an other one longer and less satisfying, and still an other was just weeeeird.

After ten minutes into my warm-up, I heard some kids on the other side of the court saying: "Hey look, it's that guy again. He's good. Let's watch him". I was like: "ok" and continued. Eventually, they stayed, we talked, and I lent them a bag to toy around with.

The eldest was about 12, the others were two brothers of 9 and 6, I guess.
Around ten, the 12 year old got picked up by his dad, which I thought was relatively late already.

The other two, however, stayed, stayed, and stayed some more. They were always asking for attention and confirmation from my part, which is kinda normal for kids that age I guess. Anyway, one of the consequences was that I managed to do but few runs (which was nevertheless quite satisfying; my spins were extremely consistent after the 9 year old told me to set higher :D ; I'm not joking).

Eventually it got dark and I was like: shit, I can't leave these kids like this. Neither can I just send them away on their bikes that don't even have lighting :?
So I said I would accompany them home, which turned out to be only a few streets away. I guess that was what they had been waiting for, because they immediately jumped on their bikes.

Their mum opened the door, and obviously she was relieved. It was 10.30pm by then and dark as hell. From what the kids told me I had already kinda derived that their parents were divorced. Yep, can you feel it coming?
After like five minutes of chit-chat, the youngest kid asked his forty-something mum: "Aren't you in love with Wim?" 8O
Shiiiiit! Confrontation!
Nevertheless, this is one of the things I like about very young kids. They almost always speak their mind, no matter what (a trait mostly absent from adults). Likewise, kids always confirm or refute what you had been thinking (in this case: he confirmed what I had been thinking).
-------------------------------------
I've finished exams and I've done pretty well, so I think I'm only a few days away from graduation. Anyway, I leave for Berlin (holi-holi-day) with some friends later today, so this is a temporary bye-bye from the forum. But not from footbag! I'm taking my gear with me. You never know.
I haven't contacted any of the Berlin shred scene, as I stay in Berlin proper for only one day. All the other days, I'll lie at the lakeside and swim in the Koeriser See, a little south of Berlin. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh 8)

Laterzzz!

Hey Wim, yeah playing doubles with you was really cool, we'll definitely have to do some more (really good for demos). I'll do some with Seb also! It was really cool shredding with you, you progressed a lot since the last time we shreded. Oh by the way, i just got out of the interview and I'm going to sign for the job :) So I should be moving to Brussels late August. One last thing: I'll be in Brussels on the 14th - 17th of July, is that when you'll be in Berlin?

Cheers, and HIT THAT PS WHIRL ALREADY (and mobius)

Little did I know. The weather was pretty nasty and in the end we came home early. Also didn't have the chance to shred.

On the other hand I graduated and did better than I expected. Yeeha! During my short and soaked stay in Berlin I also bought that camcorder I had the hots for so long, so expect a little vid of me online soon :D

I should really start planning worlds if I wanna make it (which I do!). I didn't make the registration deadline  and haven't even bought tickets. It's just that I've been busy with my exams and then left the country straight after that...

Will shred later today, but I have little expectations due to an unusually long footbag inactivity :)

Hi Belgium footbaggers. This is a former member giving shouts out to the old possee. I hope all's cool out there. What's some hot stuff you've all been hitting lately? I've been hitting the pillow more than footbag lately, but I'm hoping to change that really soon...

Haaaaah! Sean, great that you took my hint to check out modified! Also funny to see you listed as 'Circle Kicker'. Please keep us updated on what you hit other than the pillow!

I've hit little new shit lately. Taped my session yesterday, and this morning's session too. The difference was spectacular! Before yesterday I hadn't played for a week and my style was rather uncontrolled. Today looked a lot smoother already.

Weird how 'footbag' gets deleted and generated really quickly from your muscle memory.

I'm not sure what the Brussels kickers have been up to, but I'll probably find out tomorrow. It's the first day of the 'Freestyle Alternative Sports Week' in Brussels, an event hosting frisbee, bmx, skating,..., and footbag clubs! Must hit pillow now; sleeeep!

Har Solid, I'm dling the vid now. I also sent you an e-mail before I read your post; so you can pretty much ignore that. I'll PM you with further details. Cool that you can make it!
.
.
.
Watched and commented in the vid section!

I attended the freestyle event in Brussels yesterday. Wow! There seem to be quite some people interested in footbag! I also have the impression they're more serious about it than last year, when our club was first hosted by the event organisors.

Anyway, a few people subscribed for 'more information' and for the newsletter. On the other hand, we sold only one bag  but the one buyer was really enthusiastic about his purchase, which is cool.

I'm curious how Seb and Alexis (the two other members who were there to initiate newbs) have been doing today.

Seb can string pretty long tiltless now with an occasional guiltless. He and Alexis now see the advantage of bothsidedness too, so they're schooling flip clippers now :)

I tried some longer runs and tripless combos. Spin was nowhere, but pdx whirl is pretty consistent now! It's really satisfying to pull off long strings in front of an audience. It's also easy to find out what the classic crowd pleasers are (spins, ducks, datw, flyers,...). Yeah, that was pretty confronting! I sensed that the audience liked flyers, so I tried some and found out that they are NOWHERE because I haven't tried any for so long.

I'm going back to the event on thursday, hopefully to welcome, apart from a few of the club members, the Mechelen crew (Solid, Tim, Kevin), Max, and the Aachen crew (so I've been told).

Hope we can pull off some nice demos!

Back!
Wim wrote:I'm going back to the event on thursday, hopefully to welcome, apart from a few of the club members, the Mechelen crew (Solid, Tim, Kevin), Max, and the Aachen crew (so I've been told).
In the end only Solid, Max, and the hardcore Brussels crew showed up, but it was great nevertheless! Solid hasn't been playing much, but pulled off some drifters and other guiltless. He has also been tooling with heel stall recently :)
He wants infinities now, which I think will really help his game.
Hope we can pull off some nice demos!
Did we!? Yes we did! Towards the end of the event, the organisation announced a footbag demo with the 'Champion de France'. I believe Max isn't actually champion, but he played well enough to attract loads of people throughout the day and for the demo :)

I had been asked to function as a sort of sparring partner for Max  for the demo, so we stepped into the arena together. As we had agreed, we started off with some tiltless, proceeded with doubles, and threw in some moderately badass shit at the end. Needless to say, Max' impressive tricks such as PS whirl (which he performs really high) got the audience enthusiastic. I was happy to pull off some ducks, rips, datw, and blur Beesauce. We dropped twice each throughout the 3-4 minute demo (which I think is an okay rate). Max, I enjoyed man!

After we had finished our demo, I expected the organisor to announce some other freestyle sport demo. No no. Turned out that our little shred was the 'climax' of the event 8O . I'm happy I didn't know that, as it would have put some extra pressure... which I didn't need, because it was my first shred in front of a crowd that size. Hm. Size. It may be a small crowd for more experienced players, but if my sloppy maths are not kidding me, there were between 60-80 people watching, which is a LOT for me.

Haha, sales have gone up over the days. We sold our tenth bag on the last day. BrusselsFC for stock market.

------------------------------------------------------

Friday I had a short basic shred in a nearby recreation area. I forgot my shorts again (as I did on the day of the demo; thanks Seb for helping me out) so I played in rolled up knee pants :) .
No big shit, but the overall feeling I derive from footbag these days is POSITIVE! I feel like I'm building up stamina, style and control. Yummi.

The highlights of the session were
- An orthodox Jewish family giving me props 8)
- The Lille youth movement (Lille in Belgium that is, not the French version) being interested in what I was doing. Kids rule. I gave them a club flyer with some useful links, so watch out for Belgian kids on this forum!
They even wanted to buy a bag! Pity they weren't allowed to spend any money. Repression.

I also feel I'm a lot more confident and at ease with attention these days. I find out how to act. I have to act normal.

------------------------

I haven't done anything outstanding footbagwise in the last few days.

On saturday I taped a 1h30 session to find out - when I came home - that the zoom was completely IN, so I taped 1h30 of my own nipples. The kick itself was satisfying. Lotsa shuffle, too few spins.

On sunday I heard that a friend of mine had died in a car accident, which pretty much robbed me of all motivation for doing anything that day.

It's weird how you go emotionally numb when you hear that, as in a sort of self-defense.

Today I might go out for a little kick. Will check zoom first.

Time to revive this 'diary'.

I've been shredding almost daily since the previous post, but didn't update for some reason.

Thanks to Max I've been dusting off my quantums, which is a good thing. Also ducks are consistent these days. Consequently, I've hit weaving and zulu clipper BS. Weee! Esp. zulu feels really cool, but mine don't look very tight for the time being. Should skool that.

I also instructed my mom on the concept of freestyle footbag a couple of days ago. She was like: "damn, do all the things you do have names?"
Me: "yep. This, for instance, is a zulu clipper." *Wim does zulu clipper*
Mom: "well whattya know. I thought you did just random stuff"

Also my spins have never been this consistent. I did 3 consecutive spinclips on my strongside and 2.5 flip :) Could do more today I think.
I've been fixing that flip lately.

I checked out a new shredplace some days ago. It's the schoolyard of the secondary school I used to attend in the old days. Hihi.
The advantage of the place is that there's a super-large roof, which is excellent for warm but wet days (such as today). Also the fact that it's the summer holidays is cool, because there's NO chance someone will throw me out. If I get found out, that might happen as there's this pretty impressive fence I have to get passed to reach my favo spot. I think the idea is to keep people out. But the fence is just so incredibly dumb! If you go onto the schoolyard via the bike parking lot, you can avoid it easily

But I should be safe unless the nuns in the adjacent convent get terrified by a wacko kicking a bag and ask for police protection.

Anyway, time to get out and kick! It gets dark at 21.30 these days (used to be 22h). Must... kick... now...

AaAaarghghh, I had a super long reply but somehow lost it and can't recover it :x Here is an abridged version.
Hey Wim, I think I'm going to come to Brussels for the Bruxelles-les-bains on the 6th and 7th of August.
You rock!
Maybe we pull off some more demos?
No doubt!

In fact, I've heard that we are also welcoming some German people, so we'll actually have international attendance! Sweeet.

I threw my DoctorJay bag in the laundry last weekend, which has made it super-soft (thx Solid for giving me that tip)! My style and gameplay have benefited! I'm loving footbag.

Because of the tricky weather that has been cast down upon us Belgicians lately I shredded in my girlfriend's garage yesterday. There was laundry hung up to dry all over the place, so my shred area was limited to 1.5 square metres. In fact, that was kinda good, because it forced me to set straight and controlled. EDIT: ok, perhaps it was 2 square metres. 1.5 would have meant claustrophobia.

I hit some nice runs such as:
-dimwalk>ripwalk>pdx mirage>smear>butterfly>ducking clipper>osis>inf>inf>inf>ripwalk>inf>osis>inf>spinning clipper (drop)
-smudge>butterfly>ripwalk>inf>inf>sidewalk>blur>butterfly>diving clipper>inf>ducking clipper (drop)
-atomic ss butterfly>inf>ripwalk>inf>pdx mirage>dimwalk>ripwalk>inf>pdx mirage>dimwalk>inf>ducking clipper>osis (drop)

Now that I review these transcriptions, there are a few things that strike me:
-need more spins
-need more big tricks. Even though I'm nicely guiltless now, there is just too much BOP in my runs! I can do some bigger fours and fives, but they aren't consistent enough to be put in my runs with confidence

OK, time to get physical. Ciao.
