I only had time for about an hour today, but it was better than nothing. First kicking since Tuesday. I went with a guy from my floor named Mike (I think), who had never kicked before. By the end of the session, he was able to do maybe 4 or 5 kicks, but he seemed somewhat interested so I gave him a mr. sandbag to practice with. I'm not sure if he will practice, but it's worth a try. As for me, I forgot to bring a sweatband and it is HUMID AS HELL in this city (must be the two rivers), so I was sweating like mad. The spot definately is good for shred, though. The only memorable things I can think of is that 1) I had a decent guiltless run with whirls on both sides and a paradox whirl and 2) I also started a run with a double switchover and had a barrage in there.

Tomorrow I have to attend a lecture from the dean (one of them) from 1 pm to 2:30 pm, and then there's a floor meeting at 7, so I should have a lot of time inbetween.

NOTE TO SELF: remember to eat
I realized that since I have been worrying so much about socializing, I haven't remembered to eat. This is very odd, especially for me since I love to eat. I started feeling really faint about noon, but didn't have time to get much to eat. All I've had in the last 36 hours has been a banana, a small bowl of cereal, and two granola bars. If I don't get some major carbs, I won't be kicking well (that's part of the reason I didn't kick well today).

Feeling woozy in St. Louis

haha, I always forget to eat too. Yesterday all I ate was some rice and piece of ham for dinner. It made me so sick. Remembering to eat is actually really important. It totally effected my studies first year university. I ended up stashing a locker with food and then snacking all day inbetween or during boring lectures (eating food keeps me awake).

Don't forget to sleep either. :P

I made sure to load up on carbs and stuff this morning, so I don't feel faint anymore and hopefully can kick. I ate two pieces of pizza, and apple, and a quart of rice that, much like a hooker 20 years past her prime, was dry and barren. Ick.

Ok, so I didn't kick yesterday. :( I had planned on it, but I was going to be kicking with a guy whose name I thought was Scott but might be Kirk and I'm still not sure. As I waited to Scott/Kirk/whoever-he-is to come back to his room, I decided to see who else was around on the floor, and came across Lu Lu's/HeeEun's/Emma's room, in which sat Emma and Margaret. I plopped down and we got to talking. Now, our dorm has walls that magically transfer all sound, so if people are talking it isn't too hard to hear it from halfway across the floor, so soon people started using their sonar-receptors (i.e. ears) and came to emma's room to talk too. Eventually, Lu Lu and HeeEun showed up, too, and... well, we ended up having 13 people in this room all talking and socializing. I felt pretty damn schwank knowing I was the initiator. :)

Today, though, was a different story. I went and kicked around 1:15 pm, but didn't have a ton of energy or endurance. This is partially due to the fact that I am out doing things with people until about 3 or 4 am every night, so I just am out of it part of the day. The other part of it is that when we were out yesterday, we went to like 3 icecream socials, and that was my major form of nourishment. About an hour before I left to kick this morning I also had a granola bar and drank some juice, but that's not good endurance food.

However, since I haven't kicked more than twice in the last week or so, just being out there gave me such a rush of comfort and passion that I was rocking the casbah with all 4 cylinders. I was throwing down good, moderately long (given my lack of food) runs pretty consistently.

There was a good run with a double switchover, a zulu, and some stepping. I can't remember all the details, since I forgot a pen and pad, but here are some things I remember:

-illusion > op butterfly > bubba > op butterfly > blizzard-- that was the first time I ever hit a blizzard, so I proceeded to hit it on the other side later, and tried to do this drill on my flipside, but only managed to get through the first four contacts before screwing up the stepping (too much energy required)
-zulu BSOS
-butterfly > whirl > osis > paradox whirl-- I like how this string looks, but only managed to seal the paradox whirl on one side, the other side I got everything but the paradox whirl delay

I also did some spinning practice on both sides, and managed to hit double switchover L to R. I know I'm forgetting some other stuff, so sorry.

The real highlight of the day was that, near the end of my session, a guy on a bike came up by me. To get where I am, you have to carry your bike up some stairs, so I knew he wasn't just passing through. He stopped and then started talking to me about footbag! From what I learned, his name is Tony and he's 25 and an english major. He spent 2 years at Swarthmore before taking a year off to study abroad in Uganda (I think). That turned into 2 more years off while he got married, and now he transferred to WashU and this will be his first semester here, though he is kinda a senior or something. He hasn't played in a while he said, since there's no one to kick with, but he is still decent tiltless with some impressive guiltless. I can't really judge very well because he wasn't wearing lavers, he was trying to hold his too-long pants up the whole time, and he didn't really warm up. So we are hoping to session together on sundays or something like that. Woot.

By the way, I have my eye on a girl that I'm probably not gonna get. I'm still gonna make an effort and put my neck out. Wish me luck!

This post has nothing to do with footbag, so I am going to follow something cool that Henry did and post it in in white text. It's just gonna be me ranting about shit that's on my mind.

Well, I really thought about editing the aforementioned post, but I'm leaving it cause I don't think editing my blog is gonna do anything important, really. I want people to see what I'm thinking and hoping and dreaming. So this girl, Lulu, is very pretty. I could tell right away that she was a rolling stone, and one that I wasn't going to catch. She's the other type of person, but first let me explain what I mean by that. I see that a lot of people treat people and friends in different lights, two to be specific. I have always liked having close friends, and so I hang out with maybe 5 or 10 people that I like, and hang out with them a lot. The other type of person is the one that has a million acquaintances and doesn't really have any great friends-- no one to stick their neck out for them. I'm not drunk or high or anything but fuck if I'm not writing like it. Well, Lulu is obviously the other type, and I knew it from the start.

To be honest, I only thought it might be a possibility to date her for maybe the first half a day; the real reason I wanted to get to know her is much more abstract-- she's pretty. Say what? Well, since pretty girls are a difficult subject for me, I thought I'd try to get to know her as practice for the real things. I described it to my friend Mike as we walked around campus around midnight as like having a vaccine so you don't contract the disease. Well, so you would imagine I didn't have any high and mighty expectations, right? I had told her last night that we should take a walk sometime, and she agreed, although very casually, almost as an afterthought. Today, after our peer advising meetings, her, Ailin, and Jin said we should watch a movie in my room, and so I invited Peter and David, with the 3 girls' consent. We sat in my room for about 20 minutes waiting for them, watching a couple footbag videos and talking about music. After 20 minutes, David said he'd go look for them and bring them back, and so Peter and I waited. They never came back. If you think about that, it's like getting dissed by 4 different people. Now, I would expect that kinda stuff from Lulu, and Ailin seems to ride on Lulu's coattails, so that doesn't surprise me, but Jin and David seemed like dependable people, so that really bugs me. But here's the thing-- it doesn't bug me that Jin and David did that, but that so many people did. It seems like girls are just plain lame. I've met 1 girls that is sincerely cool (Sue Anne), 1 girl that is pretty cool (Emma), and a ton of girls that are petty and undependable (if that's even a word). How about guys? Nearly every fucking guy I've met is awesome-- Greg, Mike, Peter, Alex, Winston, James-- they're all great guys that I love spending time with. Why do women suck so god damn much? Is it too much to keep an appointment, god damnit?

Ugh, I really shouldn't be giving any time to this shit, but it depresses me so much to have this kinda crap. As I said, after this happened Mike and I walked around the campus, which was very cathartic. Relaxing. I came back and then tried to find other stuff to do with people. It's like I can't sit alone without getting depressed, but not homesick-depressed, just alone-depressed. I'm not liking that at all, and hope it goes away. I just feel hollow if I'm not with people or playing footbag.

And when did this start? As I think back, it started around two days ago-- WHEN I STARTED TRYING TO MEET WITH LULU. What is this teaching me? Women are the fucking devil. I feel so hollow and angry at the moment. My god, I wanna go shred for like 5 hours to get rid of this, but it's 2:14 am and I can't. I came back upstairs right before coming online and found Lulu and company watching tv in Kirk's room. I thought about asking if someone wanted to take a walk-- just to help relax me-- but then it might seem like a hint to Lulu, which isn't the fucking point.

My new goal: avoid Lulu and Ailin like I'm allergic to them. Those people suck.

Ugh, I'm kinda sorry I wrote all this but it really did make me feel better. Try not to take all this too seriously cause I'm sure it's just the heat of the moment. I'm gonna go take a walk around campus to try to feel better, but if you wanna comment on this I would really appreciate it.

Bye.

Just Breathe.

Not too much to say today. I didn't have a ton of energy, cause I stayed out until about 3:30 last night. After my rant, I did go walking, and ended up all the way across campus near my shred spot, when I heard the sound of skateboards resounding off the buildings around me. I followed the sound-- I don't know why. I finally found 2 guys, juniors at WashU I learned, on the 3rd and top level of a parking garage. They were just working on ollies and stuff, and smoking while they did it, but I still enjoyed watching them. For some reason it made me feel better to see them struggling to improve, perhaps in some metaphorical way.

So yeah, today I kicked only about an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes because I didn't have a lot of energy. Despite this, one of the first runs I did was a 10+ string, and later I had a run that lasted at least 25 seconds. It was odd.

The only really cool link I had was bubba > same side whirl both sides, and it looked really classy.

With all my work on paradox whirls, I am finding I can throw them into runs on occasion with great success. Today, out of the blue, I tried doing paradox blender instead, and came REALLY close on both sides, but didn't push the issue... instead I tried just blenders on both sides. From LFC, my blender is actually somewhat strong, but from RFC it isn't. Paradox blender seems closer on that side than blender. o.0 Practice.

I also realized I haven't been using drifters or barrages at all anymore, so I am trying to work them into runs.

Today I am supposedly gonna go kicking with Peter, Ryan, and Sue Anne, but the way stuff usually turns out around here, only one or even none of them will be around and I'll kick alone. Good thing I like kicking alone, or that might be annoying. I'll keep you filled in though. :)

PS: Yesterday I wanted to go to bed early, like midnight or so, and came back from James' and Alex's room to find that Brandon, my roommate, had invited like 30 people over to watch Office Space in our room. So I ended up sitting in David's room reading the newspaper and listening to Bela Fleck for an hour and a half while I waited. <8(

Last night, Sue Anne and Peter (and Ryan) said they'd like to see me play footbag sometime, so we set up a time today to go kick. Ryan wasn't around, so it was just Peter, Sue Anne, and me. Sue Anne didn't want to kick, which didn't bother me much. I am not very good when I spend half the time watching someone working on kicks (if they're doing moves it's not as bad). Either way, it was really windy so the linking wasn't so good. I was consistently crappy, but was still linking 5 or 6 guiltless together a lot, so it's not that bad. At one point, Lulu, Ailin, Jin, Brandon, and Ryan came by and watched about 3 minutes, and after a few "awesome!"s and "that's so cool!"s, they continued on their merry way.

Sue Anne also had to leave to go to a dance meeting, so Peter and I just continued hacky sacking (I kinda gave up on runs and just proceeded to talk with him as we both did consecutives). It was pretty nice, though sometime I really wanna show them some better strings. :/

Yeah, I guess.

Today I tried to work on incorporating ducking/diving/zulu into runs, and am starting to get the hang of that. It's a habit I somehow never got into. The hardest link in that group for me is osis > duck/dive/zulu, so I tried to get some of that. I came close to osis > diving clipper > repeat, but dropped on the last dive.

New hits include far pickup BSOS, which isn't that impressive but I like how it looks and feels, so I'll probably keep doing it until paradox barrage comes naturally out of it. I also managed sidewalk > barrage pretty easily strongside, but couldn't get the barrage after sidewalk flipside. For some reason, even though I can step out of sidewalks, the barrage feels really awkward. Also, toe whirl > whirl bs.

As I was kicking, I thought of a cool move that there's no way I can hit at the moment, but that I think would definately be a sock-rocker: surging ss refraction. Maybe I'll challenge Aaron Orton to do it. :P

I didn't kick yesterday, but last night Peter asked if I would kick with him again, so we planned for 4:30 pm today. I wasn't sure if he'd show-- not because I distrust Peter, but because I've been stood up enough not to expect commitments to be held. He did show up though, cause he's cool like that, and we played from 4:30 till 6. It was a lot of fun and he's definately making progress. He practiced a bit yesterday and it shows. His toe stalls are getting much better, and he can throw them in between kicks about half the time. He also can kick around 6 or 10 hits every time he gets the bag, due to his good inside and outside kicks (both sides!). I showed him how to do toe kicks, and he is starting to get a good hold on those too. I really hope he sticks with it, because he seems to be having a lot of fun and I would love to have someone else to play with. (I had told Tony to call my cell phone and we'd get in touch, but if he did call I don't have his number. :( I sure hope he comes by again or calls, cause 3 people playing footbag would be a rockin good time.)

Oh, and today I worked on my flipside spinning, drifters, barrages, ducking/diving/zulu, and just stepping whenever I feel like it. I'm far from a finished product, but I'm getting better.

EDIT: 46.769 on crazygame! Pretty good for one of the few times I've played it in the last 3 weeks.

I haven't had the opportunity to play in the last two days, (un)fortunately. It is not necessarily bad, though, because I have been kept occupied with some other very fun things. Saturday we had Service First, which is a volunteer program in which almost all freshman at WashU participate, helping out at local public schools in the St. Louis area for the afternoon. Beau1 was sent to Madison school, where we helped several other groups of freshman to paint 1) a cafeteria-- a blue background color with red, purple, and yellow polkadots
2) a mural-- rainforest-based; turned out really cool
3) a U.S. map in the parking lot
4) caterpillars on the little kid's playground

I helped with 1) and 2), and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Sunday most of us went to Six Flags, as part of a school sponsored trip (heavily subsidized-- $15 for $40 tickets). I hung out with Sue Ann, Nyda, Do Gion, and Hee Eun. We went on all the big rollercoasters there-- Batman something or another, Ninja, Boss, Mr. Freeze, and Screaming Eagle. What's cool is Do Gion sat in the front row on all the coasters and videotaped every ride. He also took a lot of pictures of us. I hope we can look at that stuff sometime. Lots of fun.

So tonight I am gonna do some homework, and plan to kick tomorrow.
There's a girl I like on my floor and a girl I like in my spanish class, both of whom I have decent contact/relationships with, so that's kinda nice. And a really nice girl on third floor who I like to hang out with. Not sure why any of this is relevant, but I'm sure Brian will find it at least mildly amusing. It's like a mystery-- will he finally get a girlfriend? Who will she be?! Find out next time on "Searching in St. Louis".

First session since friday. It showed. I didn't have a lot of endurance, though I think that's cause of staying up late and not eating great yesterday (all I had was a turkey leg and a HUGE icecream cone).

I wrote down a lot of stuff though, and some of it was ok. No endurance = shorter, harder runs.

-ducking clipper > drifter > sidewalk > barrage-- one side
-toe miraging legover (DLO) both sides easily-- 1st try from left toe, 2nd from right toe; I'll have to try to incorporate that since it's not too bad
-ripwalk x3 > spinning hand catch-- my ripwalks weren't great today, and this hit is all the more impressive given that the spin was on my craptastic flipside
-blizzard bs-- not too bad on it's own, but awkward in runs; practice necessary
-ducking clipper > ducking clipper > zulu clipper BSFT (both sides first try)-- sweet
-double switchover bs-- the problem on my flipside, I think, is that I'm not leaning over the bag enough
-ducking clipper > osis > ducking clipper > ducking clipper > osis > ducking clipper-- it's hard as hell to duck out of an osis
-close to toe barrage once or twice, but not really
-diving clipper > ducking clipper > repeat for 8 contacts starting on right foot clipper, 6 contacts starting on left foot clipper
-clipper set near legover > illusion BSOS

Like I said: I wrote a lot. I'm hoping to get some serious kicking in tomorrow, since I don't have too much on the slate besides that. I have work (work study, that is) from 8 am till 10 am, which is fucking early if you didn't already notice, and then I have math class from 12 to 1. Other than that, there's a bit of homework to be done and a bit of footbag to be had. Hoorah!

Felt decent today, and kicked decently as well.

-mirage > MLO (DLO) > butterfly > sidewalk > ducking clipper-- one of my first runs
-diving clipper > drifter > ss clipper* > butterfly > osis > butterfly > butterfly > diving clipper > drifter-- or something close to that; that's diving clipper > drifter BSOS;*tried to dive out of the drifter but failed
-run with spinning clipper one side, osis > drifter, and zulu clipper b2b-- first try on zulu clipper b2b in like a month
-diving clipper > spinning osis BS
-butterfly > torque BS-- first time I've done torque BS in a session since... a while ago
-paradox whirl > osis > ducking clipper-- probably the smoothest combo I have ever hit; all three moves were executed with so much flow, I felt like Lon Smith for a second
-spinning osis (weak side) > ss butterfly > spinning osis drop
-footed 5 consecutive ripwalks with only maybe 5 tries
-osis > diving osis BS-- hard; did some osis > ducking osis practice too and found that it's coming into my runs somewhat naturally now
-drifter > barrage BS to end the day

Not too much to say other than that tomorrow I see one of the girls I'm kinda interested in again. She's in my spanish class (9-10), my chem class (10-11), and in my chem lab, which is on saturdays. Hasta mañana.

Had to choose between footbag and something else today, and I chose the something else. It was definately worth it and will be described in detail later for those that are interested (read: Brian). Also, read the "described later" as "I'll tell you on messenger"... later.

Kicked again today, but not in the usual fashion. Here's how it went down:
Auguest 21st, 2005 I sent a message to the only other person (besides me) on facebook from WashU that had footbag as an interest, in which I said:
me wrote:Hey, I noticed you have footbag down as an interest. I've been kicking for around a year and will be a freshman this year. Any chance you'd want to kick together sometime?
To which today I (finally) received a response, which was:
Blake wrote:Yeah, definately. This guy, who is also a freshman, named Robert johnson ("RO JO") has apparently started a footbag club called kick it. They kick Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 in Bowles plaza (right outside the food court in Malinkrodt). Today is thursday, so I hope to see you there at 3:00.
Well, it was 3:02 pm when I noticed that, so I was like "hell yeah". I threw on my lavers and headed out on my bike to Mallinckrodt. I got there and was a bit disappointed to see 4 guys in circle kicking what looked like a super-bloated sandmaster (I later found out it was a 'jester'). Well, I thought about leaving that club for dead, but figured I might as well take a shot at this since they did call if a 'footbag' club. I parked my bike and proceeded to join the circle. I tested the waters by seeing if anyone did any delays or dexterities or anything, and found the place very devoid of freestyle, so I took the opportunity to do some demoing. A couple of the guys seemed pretty uninterested, especially at first. The person that organized this, "Ro Jo", kept saying how he thought kicking looked cooler. He said that probably 10 or more times, but as other people left to go get drunk* or do homework, he seemed more and more enthusiastic. He and his friend Mike were sad to find that they weren't the best around WashU, though. RoJo has a lot more natural talent than I do though, I think. He has been hacky sacking for about 3 years and can do toe stalls, legovers, and pendulums (sorta ugly, though). Within the course of two hours he hit mirage a couple times strongside and an illusion on his flipside (it seems that in-out dexes are easier for him strongside and out-in on flipside). A bunch of other people joined and left on occasion too, so there was consistently probably 3 or 4 people the whole time, and one or two of them genuinely seemed interested in learning footbag. I know RoJo said he was going to try to get a decent bag and shoes (he played in moccasins).

*The drinking is related to the fact that apparently every thursday there is a big party at Mallinckrodt called "Happy Hour", which starts at 3:30 or 4 or so. You have to be 21 to get into the sealed off area (it's outside in this court), but there was dance music thumping that was decent to kick to. The real plus, which is why I plan on going to kick with the group, which is called Kick It, on every thursday, is that there is all the exposure. There must have been around 200 people that saw us (or more precisely, me) playing footbag.

So while I didn't get too much out of practicing today, and I didn't get a ton of exercise, I may have done more good for the sport than I ever could have by playing by myself.

Go me.

Very well done! I was hoping they'd be more freestyle since their group was referred to as footbag but still kickers are better than nothing. I've noticed people really don't want to try if you're doing tricks, they'd rather say "cool" and walk off. But if you could rope a few of those kids and make em freestylers it'd be awesome to have a st. louis footbag club! 8)

Today I went and kicked with Peter again, though we were both very tired (not a lot of sleep recently, due to roommate issues, and by 'issues' I mean the fact that they are engineers and don't have class at 9 afuckingm every morning and so they don't want to go to sleep at midnight, and then I can't get to sleep because of them and now I'm just trying to make this parentheses last as long as possible but I guess it's got to end sometime so it might as well be now). So at first Peter and I sucked hard, but after about a half-hour of that we started doing pretty well. I had more short runs than long ones, but I would say I averaged around 4 or 5 contacts of guiltless the whole time, which isn't bad considering kicking with someone throws off my rhythm (as Brian mentioned) and I hadn't really kicked since tuesday. There was one run I can remember that just kept GOING. It was literally at least 20 contacts, and most of that guiltless, but with some riffs in there (like I tend to do strongside butterfly > osis as a bail a lot, and from flipside clipper I will do near legovers after a hard move).

Because I can't remember the uber-long run, this one was pretty cool too, even if it was short:
ROTD- diving clipper > ducking clipper > diving clipper > ducking clipper > zulu clipper > ducking clipper > butterfly > zulu clipper drop[/b]

That would have been my first run ever with both strong and flipside duck, dive, and zulu! Gah! So close! I'm hoping to kick somewhat early tomorrow, maybe 10:30 to 12:30, since Peter, Mike, and I are going to Target at 1 or 1:30.

Hasta luego.

EDIT: Oh, and Peter is progressing with his toe stalls. He can kick the bag around 6 or 7 times consistently, and throw in toe stalls with probably 65% proficiency.

Played from 10:30 to 12:15 today (in the A.M., yo). James said he wanted to watch me, and was going to come with me at 10:30. I went to his room before I left and found he had JUST gotten up, and he said he would meet me out there in a couple minutes. ... About 20 minutes later he called as I was freestyling and said he was gonna eat breakfast and would be there in about a half hour. ... About an hour later he showed up. Really, though, it was probably better this way. I don't like standing around while people try to hit the bag a couple times. Usually that means watching this for 2 or 3 minutes before finally being allowed to do a run. :S It was nicer this way because I got to practice when and how much I wanted and right before I left, he showed up. So he tried to kick the bag (he got 6 hits one time), and then I just did a couple runs and said I was going to go back to the dorm. He seemed really impressed for the short period he was there, even though I was pretty shot already.

-butterfly > whirl > butterfly > whirl > butterfly > whirl > butterfly drop
-MLO (DLO) both sides again-- not too hard strongside; hard flipside
-Spinning clipper flipside and spinning osis strongside in one run, then later spinning clipper strongside and spinning osis flipside in one run
-ducking clipper x 15-- one try, dropped the clipper on the 16th
-toe whirl > ripwalk BS-- perhaps the hottest feeling link to date
-butterfly > paradox mirage > illusion > repeat
-drifter > barrage BS-- not too hard, but I was tired so it's going on here
-butterfly > bubba > butterfly > repeat

In 45 minutes I'm going to target and a grocery store with Peter, then later I'm going paddleboating, and after that homework if it isn't too late (but I hope it is-- not cause I don't want to do the homework but because that would mean I'd be enjoying the paddleboating).
