I'll bring up a point for g-units that hasn't been addressed. I normally have a really tight and compact style which I find playing in G's allows me to loosen up. It isn't sloppy, it's just more open for whatever reason.

Also, addresisng Max's remark about no one's style getting better when they move away from Lavers... I completely disagree. I liked Felix's style more in Climas, I like Allan's style more in 300's, I like Dylan's style more in 300's, Mikko's in Climas, Matt Cross' in Climas... the list goes on. Some people who play with good form just can't take Lavers. I know a lot of people who won't play with them because of the lack of support. It's not compensating for poor form -- it's giving you more support so that if you're a big player the flimsy piece of 70's crap you're wearing as you jump up and down for three hours isn't slowly degrading your knees (or at least not so quickly).

Just play in what feels comfortable.

I play in G's since summer last year, and I haven't played in Lavers since(maybe once). It took me 2-3 session to get used to them. Clippers are definitely easier in G-Units but they feel cleaner in Lavers, for me this is ok since I have weak clippers. Especially Osis are a lot better in G's ;) but hey good equipment is there to use it... At the beginning they felt really bulky but you adjust to that quite fast. Hmm so far I could add no new things to the discussion :) Just one more thing Lavers are from the 70' and G-Units are from 2004 so I'm pretty sure that the g's have some good features of the overall shoe development in them.
G-Units are worth a try and for me they are the ideal shoe.
david wrote: The last reason why i pick lavers over units is becuase units will eventually become a climacool, and youll have to search online to buy them. Id rather know that whatever shoe i play in will be easily avaiable (lavers). Even now you cant get units online (non-ebay) for less then 50 or so. idk why but I've never really been an ebay fan.

I agree with that!

G6's are stiff and bulky, but a lot of it goes away when you break in the sole. It takes a long time, but they play best when they get really old and worn in. Then the sole feels as flexible as lavers.

And they are less bulky when you wear a smaller size than lavers: anyone who doesn't go a full size down is asking for it, imo.

The G6 clippers will make you lazy though, especially with osis moves. I've been trying to counter this by playing with a rolly bag now and then. Dirtbags rule.

I couldn't say it better myself. The only thing I'd add to this conversation about shoes affecting style is this: As with almost everything the primary factor that determines skill (which is highly correlated with style) is the raw number of hours spent practicing. So if the situation is that one can play longer or more often in a shoe with better support, then clearly one's skill will get better than if they had to be more stingy about the time spent with footbag due to health concerns. And this is true despite any short-term decrease in playing style due to the very same (supportive) shoes.

I understand that these concerns are not everyone's concerns. The youngin's are nearly invincible, and some people are just genetically lucky. My buddy Xander could easily shred 7xweek without any stress injury whatsoever (a state that I can only fantasize about).

So I'm rockin' my G-UNITS and my style's growin' like mad. 8)

Kind Regards,

In regards to the bad support, has anyone tried drilling holes in the sole of their Lavers like Ellis did? I'm considering that as an alternative to the G-units.

greg nelson drills holes in the sole, he says it makes them lighter but less durable.

I prefer the mesh on lavers for sets over the urethane/neoprene type material on the G-Units. They have a more transparent feel. I don't like the clipper pocket on the G-Units either.

I'm going to continue to wear G-Units though because the sole works much better. The soles on lavers don't have enough traction and feel hard, even with insoles.

It only took me a session to get used to added size of the G-Units. I think the weight difference is negligible. I should find a scale to figure out the real difference.

my units are about 20 grams heavier each shoe

lavers:344

units:384

of course, I could reduce each shoe by 5 or 6 grams if I removed the outside leather surface.

Do you think a shoe repair shop would put better outsoles on my lavers?

edit: my bad, 40 grams heavier per shoe.

No, it would cost a lot of money, or so Ive heard.

I like the G6s better. Grippier sole, longer-lasting sole, better cushion, better toe box, grippier surface material, thinner surface material, love the instep, minimizes roll-off, modded in half the time of lavers. How can you go wrong.

And IMO, drilling holes in lavers is dumb. It can really compromise the stability of the shoe, which is like asking for an ankle injury. Its been tried and if it were a great mod then everybody would be doing it by now. But, after 5 years or so, still only 1 out of every 300 footbaggers does it. That tells me something.

The inside is very wide in G-Units. It's kinda same as Lavers. But the toe... whoa... it totally sucks at G-Units. It's too small and... round.

On my G6's, the mesh on the toe box started to tear away from the upper portion of the tongue(on both shoes),
It's not obvious that it was because of my mod.

The tear began on the outside and began ripping inward. I caught it before it tore more than 1/3 of the way accoss. Stitching and tear mender should fix it.

My personal modding problems aside, I agree with Ken's "big 3" reasons for their advantage.

(To put it in context, though, I've only used the G6's for maybe 10 or 12 sessions so far.)

How many times have you disqualified an otherwise perfect shred spot, because it was to slick?

How many times have you had to sweep the ground during a session?

How many times have you had to to the Laver-step-on-wet-towel thing, to play on gymnasium floor?

Maybe I'm unique, but in the "recent" past with Lavers, I would only put them on moments before shredding, and remove them as soon as I was finished.

I HATED wearing them to walk around, even short distances, and especially hated the idea of driving while wearing them.

Complaint about the G6:

Does anyone else notice this? The inner metal parts of the shoelace eyes seem a little rough. I put new laces in and they start getting nicked up almost the first time they go through the holes. When I loosen up the shoes, I can feel the eyes are cutting the laces.

Maybe you get the slave labor you pay for?
