Dexing With the Hips

Post by Jorden »

Hey,

I would like to know if people consciously focus on twisting the hips when performing dexterities. I believe it may have a connection between rate of progression of a player. For this reason, it would be beneficial to have players with as many different stages of freestyle development as possible. So yeah, do the poll. :P

Do you use your hips to perform dexes? Why/why not?

As far as I can tell I don't use my hips for around the worlds, but apart from that every dex I can think of I use my hips subconsiously for.

Ones that come to mind imediately are atomic and stepping moves, and moves with change of momentum like fear and atomsmasher.

So are you trying to say Jorden, that if I think more about using my hips to dex when I do any dexing move, I will get more consistant at that move?

Interesitng topic.

Miraging dexes definitely I think about it. But, legover type dexes not so much because it's not so prevalent of a hip motion. Take a double down motion. I don't do that motion with my hips, it would look silly. Of course your hips move, but the dexing is done primarily with your legs.

So I would say the dexes that require a lot of hip movement, yes I think about it, but other moves, not so much.

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

Every time you lift your leg you are using your hips. Every toe move, every set (even stepping), every neck-height set (spinning & ducking) uses your hip.

Don't take them for granted...

While basically every dexing motion in this game utilizes your hips to some degree, I try to minimize excessive hip motion as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. As I have LLD (leg length descrepency), my right hip flexor is constantly being overworked compared to my left. This means that excessive moves that involve big, aerial adduction (and to a less degree, abduction) tend to be really hard on that side after a while. Thus, over the couple years I've played this game I've worked to find moves that provide the least amount of stress. Whirls are great for me since the best form on whirls is where you turn and and dex behind you. I can still do drifters, torques, dlos, etc., it just depends on the day and how pliable I'm feeling. Atomic is out. Same with nuclear and fairy.

The above was more a rationale as to why I didn't respond to the poll as opposed to an answer to the question. It also seemed sort of relevant -- I know other players have the same problem (although they may not realize it?). ;)

Of course, I do agree with what you say about the focus on hip motion and learning. For example, if you work on a move like paradox drifter, just cranking through the motion will get you nowhere. However, if you focus on rising with the bag and swinging your hips to essentially drift over the bag you will make much more progress.

Interesting thread.

Edit:
Also, in response to Stephen, no -- neck height moves like spinning and ducking do not use your hips extensively at all if you're clippering effiiciently. If you have your knees together you only need to focus on raising your calf at the knee which leaves your hips pretty much where they are.

Hang on, do you want to know if people think about using their hips, or when they use them. Because both questions are in the original post but the poll is more about the "thinking about using" aspect.
I used to think about pushing my dexes from the hips alot when I was learning atomic and nuclear sets but having done them for a while its usually not something I think about unless I notice them getting sloppy (I thus voted "sometimes"). Now I think more about posture - particularly keeping my back straight, shoulders back and lifting my knees straight up during toe shuffle, like i'm marching.
I feel that atomic sets, nuclear sets, drifters and torque use my hips the most.

I voted sometimes. I definitely agree with the sentiment of your article Jorden - well written - and I spend far more time drilling concepts that I can hit than drilling concepts that I can't. However I guess the problem doesn't always seem to be the hips - For example lately I've been doing a lot of flip dlo and flip pixie work and with both I think it's more about timing and what I'm doing with my ankle. I guess I tend to worry about the whole leg position a lot as well - so hips, knees and ankles I guess. I think you need all three right to have a move mastered. Not that I think I have any moves mastered but hopefully I'm getting closer :P
