While basically every dexing motion in this game utilizes your hips to some degree, I try to minimize excessive hip motion as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. As I have LLD (leg length descrepency), my right hip flexor is constantly being overworked compared to my left. This means that excessive moves that involve big, aerial adduction (and to a less degree, abduction) tend to be really hard on that side after a while. Thus, over the couple years I've played this game I've worked to find moves that provide the least amount of stress. Whirls are great for me since the best form on whirls is where you turn and and dex behind you. I can still do drifters, torques, dlos, etc., it just depends on the day and how pliable I'm feeling. Atomic is out. Same with nuclear and fairy.
The above was more a rationale as to why I didn't respond to the poll as opposed to an answer to the question. It also seemed sort of relevant -- I know other players have the same problem (although they may not realize it?).
Of course, I do agree with what you say about the focus on hip motion and learning. For example, if you work on a move like paradox drifter, just cranking through the motion will get you nowhere. However, if you focus on rising with the bag and swinging your hips to essentially drift over the bag you will make much more progress.
Interesting thread.
Edit:
Also, in response to Stephen, no -- neck height moves like spinning and ducking do not use your hips extensively at all if you're clippering effiiciently. If you have your knees together you only need to focus on raising your calf at the knee which leaves your hips pretty much where they are.
