No Hands. This is footbag!

Sorry to keep this thread going, but a thought occured to me.

I have a bag that I call 'The Mirken'.
It was made by Jeremy Mirken (go figure).

Now, that is my only 32P bag, and it's currently 2.5 years old! (that's TWO AND A HALF YEARS, PEOPLE. TWO AND A HALF!).

This bag is like a child to me. I've loved it and cared for it. It's had it's problems... two split seams, but I've been there to sew it back up, give it any filling that it might need, whenever needed...

The thing is, I don't do toe pick ups, and I don't like to kick it because I want it to last (remember - 2.5 years for one footbag!). That's probably one of the reasons I'll hand catch a serve from someone in a circle.

But (as Damon pointed out), at an event I'd like to think that my hand catches would be minimumised.

I think my flatmate summed up this whole arguement best when I explained it to her:

"that's silly"

Not talking about either opinion - just the fact that people care about if you catch the bag or not

Seriously I am sure it sounds like a very trivial thing to discuss to non footbaggers and I think probably is in reality a very trivial thing to discuss. Maybe it does show I guess the divide between the "old school" - especially the North American culture related to footbag and the "new school" - which I think in many ways is a different culture. The old culture is that footbag is like a religion - people talk about things like the energy and the flow of the circle - this sounds pretty spiritual to me. New school seems to not care about those things so much - footbag is a sport and it's about what you do when you've got the bag - all the other stuff like self serving, flow, energy etc. aren't things I think the new school care about at all.

That's just my thoughts anyway - maybe it says a lot about me that I comment on how trivial this debate is but still manage to over analyse it and stay involved

I just think it's effing stupid that someone would be willing to bust my balls just for the way I catch the bag.

I can clearly remember myself and others catching the bag in a bounty of ways at tournaments and it DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER!!!!!!!!!

That's my stance on this issue.
I think it is MORE rude to impose your set of rules on someone else than it is to accidentally break someone elses.

As you can tell, I unlocked this thread and reinserted that which was deleted out of Pete's post. I think this is actually a pretty important topic to discuss if everyone can manage to actually DISCUSS THE TOPIC without the whole "My dad can beat up your dad" thing.

Here's what I've seen as the most important bit written in this whole thread.

Ellis didn't make a big stink over it. He didn't throw a fit. He just turned around and walked away to another circle. I don't think that's elitist at all. Ellis has a particular way he enjoys playing as does Damon. If they don't want to play together then it's no big deal. Just because this is footbag doesn't mean that we are all going to agree on everything or that we have to even like eachother.
Of course we want to be cool with eachother and for the most part we are.

With regards to the actual topic though. If you are in a circle with self-serving folk and you don't like it then go to a different circle. If there's only one circle then try to come to some form of compromise.
If you are one of the self-serving folk and you don't like that someone left because you are self-serving then don't self-serve or just unerstand that there are some people out there that don't like that type of circle.

My personal feelings... self-serving is exactly what it says "self-serving". I am not a fan of that type of circle.

As a n00b, its something that makes me not want to join anyones circle. What a silly fear to add in to a super fun community.

What happened to footbag just being about fun? Now it seems like everyone has to shred someone else under the table... All this competition and ego shit is completely ridiculous to me. We are all doing something, that in all honesty, no one gives two shits about except for us.

I understand that when someone breaks etiquette it can really put someone off. Personally I don't give a fuck if someone self serves... It is a little annoying if they do it several times in a row, but all in all I don't care. However, if I am in a circle with Peter Irish or anyone else who has a problem with self serving, I will respect his etiquette. The main reason for this is not because I see him as a god... he is an extremely nice person and good footbag player, but not a god. The real reason is because little things like that can ruin a person's time. I completely freak out inside when someone chews with their mouth open or "smacks" their food. Drives me completely up the wall and I can't enjoy my food or anything else I am doing. For that reason alone, if I am doing something that is annoying to someone else, enough for them to say something, then I will not do it just for the sake of their sanity and fun.

Other than that, personal attacks are bullshit. We are all a bunch of footbag dorks anyway, and when someone says they can shred this or that person under the table I laugh my ass off. Might as well say "I'll kick your ass at Nintendo or I will kick your butt at marbles everytime bitch." Footbag is not that impressive, and basically anyone who is in any kind of good shape and practices every day can do it. Doesn't make you anything but a person who likes playing footbag everyday. Some people have better genetics and can progress better and faster than others... This also means nothing, except that they love footbag just like us, but also won the lottery. Big deal.

Footbag is for fun, so have fun and stop fighting.

I become more and more DISGUSTED at each event at the ALARMING amount of HAND USE.

They even use their hands to pick the bag up off the ground which is bad for the back

I just don't see any fun in using your hands that way.

That reminds me of a footbag I played with a SCI! It was a carol bag and it was around 10-11 years old!

I guess anything can happen if you take UBER OMFGWTFBBQ care of a footbag!

okay, i was shreding with my friend earlier inthe week and weve been playing for about year. After like an hour Scott Davidson shows up and hes like"c'mon, dont use youre hands" after I hit like weavingclip>osis>osis>catch and threw it to myself again to try something else and THEN hes like "no self serves, when youre done pass it on". I wasnt done! and it pissed me off cause Scott can go for like minutes before he drops and me and my friend were like 2ADD>3ADD>3ADD>2ADD>drop with a few 4's in there, and to top it off he joined OUR circle(well it would techinically be a line)! But still if you're kicking with me and say shit like that too much, youre lookin for a beating and his wife tried to give me tips on my diving clippers(She cant even clipper!!!@@!!!). Which brings me to another point, dont give tips unless you ARE better than the person who youre giving tips to unless its an opinion, but thats another topic.

Are you being serious or sarcastic ? I understand bending over isn't the best for your back, but my main worry when in a circle is the current circle etiquette and the other person's bag. I know when I'm in a circle and I see someone picking up my bag with their feet gives me shivers. If they're real easy with it, no big deal, but anything other than caring, I will ask them to use their hands.

Respect the circle and the person's bag. If I'm ever in a circle with people I don't know, I pass. It's a pretty common knowledge amongst hackers and freestylers alike, don't self serve. If I'm with friends and self serving is ok, I self serve when needed. I still pass here and there usually expecting a passback, if not, no big deal. I just mainly don't like to take a strong stance to where it would take away fun from others.

yeah, if i'm joining another circle its a whole different story, but most people dont mind/ do the same, so im cool with that
