Quantum Feedback; let's talk

Post by Faco »

Ok, I know there is a lot of discussion about the Quantums..but I would like this thread to be about playing in them (and not how to use PayPal).

So I guess a lot of people have got a pair and are playing regulary in them. I played in them at Worlds but just for brief preiods of time and I really can't judge them. I remember that Lavers' toe-box seemed better..

I also remember that Riku cut them a bit at the toe-box and they started falling apart, so..don't do that

How are they, compared to Lavers?

I briefly tested a pair that Ted Fritsch got from Worlds. The sole is flexible as hell! And the traction seems grippier and longer lasting than Lavers. The toe flaps seem to recede a bit more than Lavers do, which may make pixie and fairy sets a bit more comfortable (and still have proper form), so that was cool. I didn't get to look into the insides too extensively, but they seem as adequate as Lavers are.

The only bad thing I noticed in Quantums is the super thick insole. That might turn off people used to the stock Laver insole. Spencos Crosstrainer insoles or regular running insoles that are thinner would be great for these shoes.

I was thinking that since it has two types of fabric layers, you can still further mod the quantums, but after reading what you mentioned about Riku's shoes it doesn't seem likely or necessary.

That's my two cents. I know David Clavens and Ken Somolinos have made much more observant details than I have on these official footbag shoes.

hmm.. i don't have quantums, so i can't give a review.
but i can tell you that jakob wagner has been playing in quantums for the past couple of months (he was one of the prototype testers) and even though he could switch back to lavers now, he bought himself a pair of quantums and continues to play in them because he likes them better. so they can't be that bad

i havent tried them (I wear 12 laver, no quantums to fit me :( )

but from what I see and read, theyr good. from the video i could see that the sole was thicker in the middle, width-wise(compared to lavers) so the insides look comparable to gunits. as for the toes, ive read people dont like them, but then again others say you have to change the (really thick) insole so that you get more room in the toes.
Plain, with everything.

I played in golbergs for like 20 minutes or something.

The inside is fine. just as good as the laver. slippery material. not like, omg this sucks slippery, but like, i have to get used to this slippery. the bag sits pretty nice on the inside when you stall it right, but the inside really isnt concaved at all, so if you rely on that gunit inside, you might have a little bit of a problem getting used to it. they are definatley made for shit like ripstein though, becuase there is nothing to interfere with rolling the bag stright back and off.

the toe box sucks, but i heard that its becxuase i didnt take out the insoles. it feels like you are way too high up and that causes the toe box to kinda bubble up i guess. im not sure, but if i was lower in the shoe (like, without insoles) i think it would be pretty nice. the walls are small, so you can still flick your shit if you need to.

the shoes feel really good, they feel like slippers. i like how they are really flexible. the sole seems good, but i was playing on good surface. the laces and all that shit are fine. you can get them nice and tight.

i played pretty well in the shoes. i could do most of my clipper shit without really struggling. my toe stuff was there, but it kinda would fling forward, becuase the bag would land closer up front. weird.

i think if you took out the insole and your foot sat lower the toe box would be fine. the inside is ok, but it isnt like as good as the unit or a broken in laver.

idk, ok shoes. give them time, you could probably bust in them. not worht 100 dollars to import. if you want to support footbag, go for it. i would if i found some cash.

hope this helped.

Sure, It helped a lot!

I think they got it pretty good, regarding this is their first attempt. I am all about supporting Footbag, so we will be ordering them soon.

I was just wondering..why indeed did they make the surface slippery. Wouldn't it be more convinient to make it rough? Wouldn't that stop the bag nicer?

And they will need to work on the toe-box in the future

I'm sure the guys at planetfootbag were thinking about Lavers when they were designing the Quantums (duh ). Fresh Lavers have a slippery outer mesh and sole, and with break-in and dirt those surfaces would be choice for footbag. I think the same can be said for Quantums. No one at this stage has fully broken in a pair of Quantums just yet I believe.

Plus, if they made the surfaces rough, that might damage bags with prolonged shred.

I think Dave meant the surfaces are slippery in that the bag doesn't snag. If you have good form then quantums will work fine for clippers. If you rely on the pocket of the g-unit inside to catch clippers you'll have a problem switching to quantums, but no more so than switching to lavers. I think slipperiness is a non-issue.

Ok, so I played in Quantums yesterday for about an hour.

Good stuff:

-very light
-you can feel the bag more
-flexible sole
-more comfortable than Lavers
-look very stylish

Bad stuff:

-toe-box is big..but not in a way I would want it to be
-need getting used to

About the toe-box. It's bigger than Lavers' toe-box but it just doesn't feel right. I don't know hot to explain this. I didn't try to take out the insole, so I can't comment on that.
Perhaps It's just that Lavers spoiled my toe delay and that I would get a lot better in Quantums in time. It is very unfair to judge them so fast, they were out-of-the-box.

So taking everything in account..I am looking forward to experiment with Quantums and will probably buy a pair for myself. But for now (until I try them more), Lavers remain number 1 pick for me.

-- COMMENT ON QUANTUM SIZES --

I'm about a 10.5 US I guess, and I was told that quantums are half size larger than what is on the tag so I ordered a size 10. Well the size ten feels like a size 10. I tried a friend's size 10.5 and it feels like a 10.5. So er.. yeah. That was all really.

ps: I already sold them to a friend.

I FINALLY GOT MY QUANTUMS

:D

Here is my review:

Overview:
They are way lighter than lavers, this means fast dexing moves and things like whirls are a lot easier, it also makes blender feel like the coolest thing you ever felt!

They look damn sexy - wow, I had to stop Toby stroking them today BECAUSE I WAS STILL WEARING THEM :? lol

There is one less eyelet than lavers because the wings are further back, so start rethinking ur lacing patterns!

They have a low inside bit, so no need for ugly brokka mod!!

Material - the inside and toe are made out of a soft foamy material (maybe for bag shock absorbtion?) The material seems pretty grippy and you can feel the bag through it very well.

Professional look - I heard some people walking past today saying "Wow they have special shoes for hacky now!" - in other words, these clearly look like specialised shoes, not your everyday kicks - BUT they look damn stylie too (better than origional lavers IMO).

Toe:
Take the insoles out, I coulden't even hit legover with em in.

Toe size depends on lacing patern, I have laced so my wings don't stand up very much at all. I tried standing them up but they are too far back to hold the bag on your toe and just act as snags for the bag.

The bad - My wings cover quite a bit of my toe box and since the sweet spot is quite far back on the toe box, it means you have to be pretty precise about where you catch the bag. Since the toe material is soft, it's like the bag is landing on your bare foot, if you catch it on your toes it sets forwards so you have to catch it in the toe joint area (right between the wings), so in the end I think the effective toe area is bigger on lavers.
From my experiance today the toe box is harder to stall on, if I drop the bag on my laver it will 90% just plop in the toe box and stay, if I do the same on my quantums and it doesn't fall atleast close to the centre, it will roll off.
For some odd reason atomic sets are harder, I don't seem to be able to set the bag toward the inside of my knee, this could be because it defaults to setting perfectly stright? I hit fairy blender today no sweat and then spent a good chunk of time trying to hit atomic blender, and managed to actually get off about 2 atomic sets in like 10 minutes :?.

The good - this is helping a lot, I am consistantly catching the bag in the middle of my foot so my sets are far more consistnat, also I don't have my toe sets catching on my wings like I did with lavers so I think my toe game will improve with quantums. Provided I stall the bag close to the sweet spot, it seems to move automatically to the perfect spot and results in a perfect set almost everytime, this has ment my fairy and pixie sets are more consistant, but it's taking me more concentration to actually hit the toe delays in my moves.

Clipper:
The clipper rail isn't as curved as lavers and the suade that goes round the front of the shoe doesn't come back far enough to effect the bag. This is good and bad.

The bad - the sweet spot isn't as obvious as on lavers, lavers have the bit of suade which stops the bag and they have a huge curve in the sole which means you can do clippers without having flat ankles.
Since there is no concentrated sweet spot that the bag rolls into and catches on, it makes stepping sets a bit harder because the bag doesn't have a little hole to fling out of during the set

The good - I'm not sure but it feels like the clipper rail slopes outward so when the bag lands on your clipper, if it slides or rolls, the curved outward edge of the shoe stops it, which results in MUCH LESS ROLL OFF! WOOOO!
The sweet spot seems longer and less concentrated, so you can catch the bag anywhere along the clipper rail and it will set evenly. This seems like it would reward flat clippers which I don't mind at all :)

Sole:
Pretty much the sexiest thing i've seen in my life.

I'm going to have to quit doing flappers least I get flocked by girls that are in love with my gangsta 'quantum' soles ;).

They are initially a little slippery (same as lavers to start with) but I think that when the plasticy sheen wears off they will be grippy as ever.

uh, it probably doesn't hurt to mention that the quantums are *all* mesh/foam. Lavers have a hard plastic shell behind the outside/clipper area that goes back around to the heel. The quantum does not have this. i still can't decide if this is good or bad.

when I tried these on, they felt more like a sock to me than a shoe - strange. I didn't like them very much, but it's most likely just another one of those instances where you have to get used to something..
