I hate to be a dick, but I don't think that should be on here. You want to look like athletes? Want a positive image for the sport? Then don't have steps to roll a joint next to every post you make.

Sorry, I just don't think that's right.

If you don't have anything intelligent to say, please don't clog a thread about an issue I think has some merit.

Thanks.

I agree with you david. I like the movie that that clip is taken from, but I don't think it's appropriate for an avatar on modified.

i think its neat. its probably going to get old fast, but i like it. just change it in a few weeks, and ill be fine.

does it really hurt your feelings to have that to see that? he represents himself, not me or you, and i dont really care if that furthers the stereotype of stoner kickers to every 12 y/o on the internet.

this is so lame. why did i bother?

This is lame? We spend time talking about fabric thickness and you think the image of the sport is lame.

We obviously have different views on what's important.

My feelings are not hurt. I kind of like it. I'm not overly stressed about footbag's image, and I generally prefer to stay the hell out of these little debates, BUT... I like to read this forum at work (even though I'm not supposed to) and it's an image I can really live without on my computer monitor. For the sake of not getting me fired, I'd appreciate it if you changed your avatar. Hell, keep it something drug-related if you want, but I think the moving image, the green herb on the paper, the smoke, (basically because its an eye-catching little moving image,) might attract more attention than a still image. (really, if I were fired, I supposed it would be my own damn fault, but that avatar isn't going to help matters any, and it just makes me feel extra nervous). Thanks.

I deliberately avoid drug-topics on this forum when I am at work, because there are several ways that my web-surfing can be monitored, but setman writes in the technical topics too, and I like to read what he has to say, so it makes it much harder to dodge unwanted drug talk or drug images that I feel could have a negative impact on my livelihood.

I've put thousands of dollars into the promotion of this game (and I don't mean the money I've spent on purchasing bags and traveling, etc., I mean money spent purely for the betterment of the game), and all that money has come from my job. I don't want to lose that job because of something tangentally but unnecessarily related to the game.

Yeah, yeah, I'll probably never get in trouble at work because of one stupid little movie-avatar, but who's going to benefit if I do? Will anyone be able to say "yeah, it was worth the trouble, because, MAN, that little movie was just that cool !! " ???

I really like the way, David, that you brought this up and put forward your opinion, rather than trying to get an admin to remove it. That's a much better approach and it's sad that it's no longer the approach the mods/admins take. Good work with this topic, everybody wins.

I like david's approach to the situation as well. In fact, it's exactly the kind of approach I'd wished someone else had taken recently to an issue with another player's image choices.

I don't know what approach it is you're referring to that the mods have mishandled, but when I was on the staff, I know I did everything in my power to try to create this kind of response to a situation recently, and was absolutely unable to get the user to comply.

I'm finding a lot of your posts regarding the mod staff rather finger-pointy lately, Mr "I've got the solution to all your problems, but it's a secret".

I think david's approach to this situation has nothing to do with the mods or what the mods think, so I don't see how it has anything to do with how the mods approach forum issues. I only see how david approaches them.

which, I'll say again, is my preferred response to this kind of situation.

...

okay, now I get it. you wish mods would bring forum issues to the community instead of making decisions themselves. But what if we (oh wait, "they"...) decide that an "issue" is actually kind of frivolous, or personal, or simply not worth discussion?

then the user should do what david did without asking for permission, which was bring the issue to the community personally.

I don't like it. I have no problem with ppl who smoke the wacky tabacky. However, there are kids as young as 12 and 13 who come on to this forum. I think those kind of images could give them or any other new visitor the wrong impression about the sport. Plus, people's parents/coworkers/boss/teachers may see the forum from time to time if they're on it. Yes, some footbag players smoke herb. But we have a stereotype we're trying to fight that "hackysack" is a "stoner thing" and stuff like that is feeding the stereotype. It's up to you whether or not you want to do drugs, but I think for the sake of representation of the sport, it shouldn't be someone's avatar on modified.

Setman thanks for being a champ and taking it down and not putting up a big fuss. You don't seem to be taking it personally, which is good.

I agree that this is a good approach to solving these sorts of problems, which is why its the approach I take, and it also the approach I have largely seen taken by other mods - however, unfortunatley not everyone who uses the forum respects the other users as much as david or Setman, if Setman had decided not to change his avatar, and then david decided to make a more offensive one about him and post it all over the place, and send him abusive pms, we'd have a problem. Thankfully they were mature enough not to do that and we have no problem. Thanks guys, it just goes to show that modified isn't such a horrible place after all.

Don't you remember how perfect the forums were for that month when Jeremy was an admin? I wish he'd become an admin again so the forums would go back to being perfect...

I agree with Ken, Jeremy was a great admin.

I also agree with Jeremy. I like the way David handled this in a calm manner, with great respect for the community, and in public.

Not to disagree with Clavens, whom I respect greatly, but this is pretty stupid. Who fucking cares about his avatar? And if you do, just keep on browsing past it. I can understand being upset about an avatar that has gay-bashing/ really foul language/ racial epithets etc. but I just don't see this joint-rolling avatar as being in the same category. If it is not breaking any rules, then is should be allowed to stay up, unless Setman agrees to takle it down (which he has, nicely). But I reiterate, he shouldn't need to.

Modified needs clear-cut UNAMBIGUOUS rules for what can and can't be in an avatar. Without a proper set of guidelines to follow, there will always be questionable avatars that some people love and others hate, and which some people want to take down. It's just silly.

Re: Jon Schneider's argument, nothing on this forum is done in order so that you (or I) can have an excellent browsing experience of modified while at work. That is not the point. If it were, I'd complain that too many people are producing vids that I can't watch at work b/c I am unable to d/l programs that aren't already installed on this computer. I hope we don't get fire, but Setman's avatar has nothing to do with it if we do.

Shrug, make rules then. I just thought it would be really unfortunate if some kid saw that and was like "huh? these guys smoke?", and that somehow changed his footbag experience.

If my parents knew there was pot in the footbag community I would have never been allowed to go to a tournament. And they still don't know, and if they found out, I probably wouldn't go to as many jams as I go to. My parents are really strict.

If you don't want the sport expanded and you like the current image, great, but don't taint it for those who are trying to give it a more athletic vibe.
