First session in Gs, only the surface mods have been done. Toe box remains. The walls don't get in the way as much as they do on lavers, but they still screwed with my pixies for a little while. I think I could get used to them. I liked spins, clippers, swirl sets. The weight is good, the support is GREAT, which is something I really like about them... climas aren't good for stability, so I'm glad to be giving these a try. Mobius was pretty easy, midstring vortexes no problem. I hit ripwalk > mobius both sides, not sure if I'd done that before. That means I can start throwing it in midstring. footed swirling blender > ps whirl a bunch of times, I'll have that soon.

I haven't played in WEEKS, and it was weeks before the last time... I've been on a break lately, focusing on other stuff, but hopefully as spring comes back around, so will the bag in my life. Stitching is good, music is good. Keep an eye on my blog for another cute little guitar video soon. I look forward to playing with you guys soon, and I hope we can get some sweet kickers out to the geneseo jam.

played again today in Gs. I think the toe walls will go. They're saving bad catches and requiring stylistic adjustments that I'm not into. I played with decent control, but short strings, and having the weird toes gave me bad strings. Plus, every time I did 4 kicks or more, my weiner would come out of the fly in my underwear, which was REALLY distracting. all that plus the wind plus a weird step I took when I left my house before the session made for a not that amazing session. I'm liking the Gs, though. They're rock solid under me, they have consistent sets, and they're of good weight.

I'm working on bag #71, it has a pattern I've never seen before. I'm really into it. Can't wait to post it. It's an expansion on that N footbag I made, #69.

Shower time, then fun time. Today was a good day for me so far. I hope the rest of it goes as well.

the middle of page three! I let this sink deep...

my game is shit... anyone who saw me at grass knows this... but I did hit blurry whirl > blurriest > pswhirl > string on sunday, and on friday, I hit a few sweet things barefoot... both whirlwinds, ripstein > psw, both superflies.

I want to play decent at worlds, so I have a lot of work to do. I'm going to start sessions with some kicking and LONG tiltless strings, then move on to long guiltless, then drills, then phat combos at the end. I kind of did that today, but with shitty results. it ended okay. hit some new combos at the end, spinning whirl > ps whirl both sides easily (probably could have hit that a LONG time ago), alpine bw > ps whirl. I also hit both montages pretty easy at the end. spenders were feeling good too. I also hit a flip smog earlier in the day which is not that hard, but rare for me.

I have work to do. I'll be in fredonia this summer, working full time with an internship, so I hope I can find some time to play. we'll see.

I had a hard time even getting out of bed this morning. no class or any responsibilities for the whole day, really, and my final exam / study situation is not too pressing. So it was actually kind of depressing to wake up malnourished and over-self-medicated with nothing to do all day (does that surprise anyone?).

I also woke up and started my day really sad about something I read on modified last night. I was reading tom's blog about his worlds plans, and he had all this great stuff going on with a house away from the site, and it made me sad that I wasn't involved with that. At first I was a little hurt and felt a little disincluded, but that subsided when I realized it probably had more something to do with not posting in the thread in which those plans were manifested, but then it just got me to thinking about our friendship in general.

Tom used to be my very best friend in the whole world. We just loved a lot of the same things, shared a lot of the same ideals, and were really accepting of each other, generally. Boy, we had some really fun times.

but, times change, people change, ideals shift, possibilities change, schedules change... And it's been different these past couple years. There's no one to blame; it's just what happens to friendships. It just makes me sad, because I miss my buddy.

I'm going to share one of my favorite tom mosher moments, maybe my favorite one. It came right about at the pinnacle of our friendship; right when we were having some of the most amazing times, and also right when I started to realize that neverneverland never lasts forever.

it was the night of finals at Worlds '05 in helsinki. I had just cut all my hair off, just started using climacools, just met lise thygesen, just started smoking tobacco again for the first time in years (oh how they love those spliffs in europe). We had just spent all night in some park in helsinki getting crunk on strong mixed drinks and spliffs with peter irish and vaska and all the other party animals. You can see some clips from the party at the beginning of Max K's 2005 video. Tom rolled a huge spliff with almost all the rest of my hash, and we puffed it, and then jammed out (with my buddy baptiste from nice, who tom and I both thought was awesome) for the clip that you can see from max's vid.

We walked away from the party, and had this kind of sad conversation about how we were walking away from one of the most incredible places and times either of us had seen. We made it to the transport station, and went inside to buy snacks, and said goodbye to the Special Tricks posse, who we ran into randomly. They were going to get a train back towards home. Then we went outside with our snacks and waited for the train to come and take us to kallio and our hotel. We sat there recovering and talking about the week and were just beginning to wind down, and we had been quiet and eating for a minute, and tom said, "matt, you're my best find in footbag".

and it made me want to cry, because I loved him so much, and had been appreciating him as my best friend and one of the most important people in my life that I'd ever met for some time then. It really was one of the most touching, emotionally powerful things anyone had ever said to me. I mean, think of that. Tom Mosher, Mr Footbag Culture himself (ESPECIALLY at the time), and he said that.

I don't remember what I said. I might have said thank you, I might have returned the sentiment, I might have said nothing, I might have kept chewing my sandwich, but I can tell you for sure that I was deeply touched, and deeply happy, and deeply sad.

god, I miss that crazy bastard so much. I have no one like that now, at all, and I guess I didn't for some time before him. and now he's off to Berlin. byebye.

Just something that's been on my mind today. Hope you haven't read this far and become disappointed.

I'm surprised to see that I'm reading this over and tearing up.

your post makes me think of my relationship with footbag latley. I've been kinda A-wallin' it since the cornell jam. I've got alot of excuses, but none of them are probably any good. I miss the times Willie, Pat and all the RFA used to have. I kinda would rather have a small jam with you guys. Drinking beers and smokin' joints and just relaxing. hopefully we can relive some of those times before we all scatter to different parts of the world.

See ya at Montreal?

Wow Matt, I am so glad I opened this. Sniff.. sniff.. :) Thanks for saying so much nice stuff about me.

Don't feel like I am forgetting about you. I feel like each time we see eachother we are just picking up where we left off. You are one of the only people I can relate to and really talk openly with.

I won't be off to Germany for a few months at least, we need to get together and trip out on drugs and see deep into time and space.

I have learned so much from you over the years, I really appreciate your influence in my life.

Remember when you pulled me out of my room at UQAM at World's 2004 and took me to the room with Genz and Irish and we all partied? That was like.. my ticket to all this insanity. I would never forget how I got where I am.

You've helped me so much, as a shredder and as a person. You've helped get me through tough and akward times in my life and stuck with me as I did my best to grow.

Also, I still like you! We've both been total jerks at times and we both keep coming back, I think that says alot. We both recognize when something we've found is valuable.

I hope you continue to have a big influence on my life for years to come. :)

Hug!

wow, good post on my part, two responses from two east coast all stars already! josiah, I'm down. Post about it in the RFA blog. also, I'm leaning more towards moe.down than funtastiks this year. EAST COAST TAKEOVER!!!

mosh, you my dogg.

so, today started out as a really shitty day, but I knew it was all in my head, and it ended up being a wonderful day. My worlds plans are coming together wonderfully; apparently there's room in Chez Mosh for me, and apparently there's room for some pretty big east coast names, too. I am so excited.

I'm hitting the hay pretty soon. can't wait to see who shows up in montreal.

played again today, 3rd day in a row, for about 60-90 minutes. worked some strings, some spinning ducking... hit some new cool combos... spinning whirl > blurry whirl > ps whirl. Once I warmed up with stepping out of blurry whirl, that was easy. Then, blurry whirl > blurry whirl > tomahawk. also, spinning ducking butter > blurry whirl, and blurry whirl > ps whirl > pdx torque. all pop fearless, I know, but my game is so bad right now, I've got to do SOMETHING! ;) my endurance is shit, but I will keep playing each day and not smoke until I've played. flip datw is more reliable.

I just want to be able to play at worlds and not hate myself the whole time. because, these days, when I play, i just hate myself. not in the worst way, though. In a way that makes me want to keep trying and get back to where I was, and then keep growing. and, hitting some new fearless always makes me feel better. I should work on some tripless drills too and really try and get my strings going. I'm just so WEAK!!! maybe I need to start running too. at least I ate something decent before playing today.

hey guys

it's me the mushroom provider for our canada day jam, right now I'm in Melbourne, Australia... so far away from footbag. I still think about it, but I've got some new interest at the moment, and some stress too.

I'll talk about that later though, I'm writing in here because I read about your friendship with mosher. You knoow I didn't really know you guys before Canada day of last year, but meeting both of you really made me appreciate how shared interests can bring people together. This year I met a few great people at the Auzzie nationals, but the people I think I connected the most with were Lotus, the guy behind Elemental Footbag and that 16 year old Alex Urano, Dyalan and Jamie were great, we partied hard at that True live show. Everyone else was great... But let's talk about you two guys, 2 genuine person, the kind of people you can be apart from for a long time and then connect after all that time. I only met you once Matt, but I'm sure that we'll cnnect when we meet again. You remember when I told that guy to fuck off, that was over the top, but it was me exploding, all that stress he was bringing me when I was off my head was hard to express in my 2nd language, but you remained cool all that time. That's really cool

I appreciate you, and I count you as one of my friends, even though I don't really see you.

I'm here down under, I'm making jewelry, rings and necklaces, selling all kinds of art at Uni markets, and I found something that I wanna do in my life... It feels great.............

I love life

keep on rockin my friend, I value our 2 day friendship amd both you and Tom are really cool guys, hope to see you soon

I might be in canada for summer, maybe at Worlds, but that not sure, too expensive and I've got a big festival to go to, running my shop

take care

peace mate

jp, I'm just catching this now, a few days later. I am out of the habit of reading my blog.

I don't remember you yelling, was it at that indian guy? he needed to be told to fuck off... Jivan was his name!!! oh man, that cat was weird!!!!!

I want to address you personally, so I'm going to send you a message... I don't think I've seen a blog from you recently... does "a pickers life across canada" still exist?

hehe, from back in february, there's a post! I'm going to wake it back up and send you a PM. thanks so much for the nice post.

footbag has brought me my best friends in my whole life. nothing has brought me closer to so many amazing people that I love.

I've been playing again this past week or so. I've switched back to lavers for the time being. the inside on the clima is too inconsistant. The inside isn't such a bucket on lavers as it is on climacools, and they aren't as light, but I think I'll be able to have more control in them than climas, so I'm giving them a try again. I took my green twill ones, did the outside mod, and chopped the walls. they're playing well.

I hit some new moves in my last few sessions, gyro twirl both sides (I may have hit that a few years ago), bullwhip both sides, near mofly (pretty much swivel done under / in front of you instead of behind you). I'm getting a little better each day. I've never been a good driller, so I'm making little drill goals. This one is going to be a testament to how much I suck right now, because it took me a while to hit it: parkwalk > schmoe > pixie ss mirage rpt :/ laaaaaaaame, I had shit like that years ago.

the good thing about the fact that my game has totally gone to shit is that it's not making me feel like a worse player now that I'm trying different shoes after a long time. I seem to suck equally in lavers and climas. Lavers feel more solid under me. I liked the cushiony feel of climas, but the cushioniness sacrifices balance and consistancy.

I've just taken Friday june 1st off from work, so hopefully I can arrange to travel to montreal with the RFA if I buzz over on thurs night. I can't wait, I love montreal, and it would be so sweet to not have to drive to a tournament, and I get to see mosh and peng for the first time in a while, along with all my other MTL favorites, and hopefully some tamtam action!!!

I am unbelievably excited for my worlds living situation. I'm still getting the plane ticket firmed up, that should come real soon. I'm staying in a house a few miles away from the site. The house has an enclosed private pool, full kitchen, internet, tv, beds for everyone, access to a hot tub, and the best worlds roommates you could ask for!! check out this roster:

myself, tom, peng, john bagi, peter irish, gordon bevier, aidan clemente, seb duschesne, caro bourgoin, james mccullough!!!

oh my god. east coast all stars... I love everyone on that list, but... THE EXECUTIONER is my roommate for worlds!!! come ON!!! that's the shit, yo. I am so glad that my lodging is away from Disney... that hotel situation kinda sketched me out, because us baggers like to party, and I can't imagine general security policy is taken very lightly at a big international destination like disney world.

now I've just gotta get stitching so I've got mad bags to sell once I get there... not that there's going to be a big market. I have a feeling that the market is going to be completely saturated this year, what with the crazy plans people have for bringing piles and piles of bags. I remember at worlds 2000 when carol wedemeyer got mobbed when she pulled out a ziploc bag with her footbags in it. People were buying 2 or 3 at a time. crazy!!! well, hopefully I'll have some, and hopefully some people will want to buy them. I want to get some pictures with disney characters doing toe stalls.

I resolve to take pictures this year. I didn't take pics at worlds 05, and I wish I wish I had. I'll have a battery charger and extra batteries, and I can unload my memory card onto my laptop which I'll bring (and use to update the fizzied from the bungalo). This is gonna be the shit. I just hope I can play...

I didn't get to kick yesterday because of schedule constraints. I really hope I do today. I'm psyched to drill and work on some more big combos and get used to lavers again. I really was liking the surfaces better than climas, and I like that the inside surface is a little more challenging. I might need to trim my insoles so they're not pushing the side out. I'd like to get my swirling gyro stuff back, maybe hit swirling spender again. but, really, I'm going to be focusing more on longer strings and some drills. The weather is wonderful today.

I'm so lucky!~!! 3 mosh posts on one page; who could ask for more! I just had a big plate of leftover pizza and noodle vegetable salad for lunch, with a bottle of water, so hopefully that will give me lots of good shred energy. Things are coming together at the new place a little better. I need to do lots of cleaning, and empty out the refrigerator. Hopefully there will be time this weekend, and also time to go to rochester and cause a little havok. also, I believe I have a gig tonight, so that means free drinks at least. I wish I had someone to play with me. poor lonely college town, no one else to come around, no one to lay their money down when I play my songs. maybe I'll make another little video when I get home. I've got some fun songs to record... more tapping, more singing stuff.

edit: oh yeah, just a note so I remember, I thought of a good band name today, or rather someone said a good one to me: stress frog. also, I like "the n bomb" for a band name, or maybe some spelling variant on that. Stress Frog!!!

long solo sesh this afternoon after work. I played for about 2.5 hours on my porch. worked on fairy set and flails. hit some new moves, little orange both sides, and symp tapping symp whirl both sides, although the flipside one could have been better. also hit ripped warrior BSOS a few times, not sure if I've done that before. I'll try it with zulu warrior tomorrow. My legs start to feel weak just a few contacts into a string, gotta work on that strength and endurance. at least I've been eating more. I hit 100 infinity first try. I also hit the quantum version of rubberman (whatever that's called) > string, blurry whirl > fog > string. whirling swirl bsos a few times. I want to get that more consistent. I put a little time into DLOs and eggbeaters, not much. All in all, I had a good time. There was great weather, I played okay (in lavers), I brought my bird out and he loved the nice weather and talking to the other birds. My friends came out and cheered me on while I was trying to hit flip smog, and I hit it. that was cool. I just might be able to do some tricks at worlds...

I'll hopefully have consistant internet access by tonight or tomorrow. my friend is still getting things set up in his room, where the modem is, and he has to pick up his router. in the mean time, I've got a gig tonight, and some food to eat. I'll be playing alone at EBC, the local brewpub, for a few hours tonight. I hope it goes well. Not sure how long I can play for, and I'm not sure how many people will be there (as this is a college town, and college is over). I just got my grades for the semester. I've received 3 As and 2 Bs, and I'm expecting one more A on monday. I'm pretty glad about that, so is my mom, so that's good. This semester went pretty well, and I'm all scheduled for next semester.

I just finished my first week of work. I liked it a lot, we start the day pretty slow with some coffee drinking for about an hour, maybe some light filing, then go out and walk around for a few hours looking for serial numbers (I'm doing inventory for the university). Then, we have a "half-hour" lunch that usually stretches to around 90 minutes, then we go walk around for a few more hours, then come back and mess around for an hour, maybe do some more filing, maybe browse email and stuff, and then I head home at 4, with lots of energy left over for shred. Although, I am BEAT today. It's been a hard week on me, with the change of sleeping schedule and all, plus the longest solo session I've had in a long while, so I'm feeling tired. I'm going to go nap before my gig. Later fizzied.

hope to see you in montreal or at worlds!!

well, I didn't end up taking that nap yesterday. I gave my new place some much-needed cleaning for a few hours. I cleaned all the dishes and put away the ones I've got, emptied out and cleaned the fridge and microwave, wiped down the kitchen surfaces, took some really fruity stickers off the bathroom walls, cleaned the shower, put the living room back together.

so, now that I've begun this post in such an interesting manner...

the gig went well last night. being that this is a college town, the place was almost empty last night. my friend opened the night with a solo acoustic / vocal set, and I did the same after him. I only made $25 at the door at a dollar a head, but the way I see it, if I hadn't been there to play and drink for free, I would have been sitting over at the bar paying to drink, so all in all, it was a fun time. Also, because the attendance was so low, I played a lot more original music than I had at previous gigs, which was nice. I have a song that's been one of my favorites to play for a while now, called show me a scar, and I realized last night that it's almost been 5 years since I wrote it. A few beers, a few songs, a few bucks... not a bad night.

I woke up at around 9:30 today and then went back to sleep until about 1, got up and bought soup for my friend and next door neighbor graham, ate it down, and set about to getting my wireless internet working. That just meant about an hour on the phone with linksys tech support, and I'm using it now, so that's good.

my session today was fun, I played for about 1.5 - 2 hours. I was SORE from that long session yesterday, so I started off with some kicks and then some tiltless. Then spent a little while getting toe blur > tripwalk > blur repeat, which took a few tries, but I got it to a string, then I did rubberman to a string, then fear > fairy butter > blur repeat > string. I believe I did the same with pixie, not sure. maybe not. then, fear > smoke > string both sides, then dlo > op toe repeat a bunch of times > string (my DLOs have never been that strong). Then, it took me a LONG time, but I got muted spinning clipper > gyro clipper repeat > string. That was a good drill to pick because I was tired and sore, and it's not a very strenuous combo. Then, I worked on diving mirage > legbeater repeat, but I couldn't get it, only the link on both sides. flip diving mirage is not strong. I need to readjust the way I set my ducks and dives, especially on my flip. I need to do the whole set with the set foot. I've been doing a small hop of the support leg to really get the bag up in the air. Same for spinning ducking. More work to do.

Tonight, we're hanging with some friends from buffalo. I had considered going to rochester tonight to hang and eat sushi, but it's a bit late now. I'll go next weekend. no gigs or anything planned, so I can head out on friday, hopefully get in a session with the RFA, crash somewhere friday night, get up on saturday and check around town for this and that, catch up with this girl I like and take her to a sushi dinner and dollar pints, crash somewhere that night, head back on sunday at some point. I LOVE going to rochester, because I've got so many friends there that I can just crash around and hang out with people and have a little weekender. I feel like VIP when I go there. The last few times I've gone in for sushi, my friend who works there has given me a bottomless pintglass of plum brew beer, which is SO good.

Things are getting settled around the new place. I'm getting my crazy landlord to start taking care of some necessary shit (like providing me with a space heater, giving me locks for my doors, getting trash off the front porch, etc) and the place is starting to feel a bit more homey after those first few rough nights. I'm glad to have my internet to connect me to the rest of the world again. now, to start stitching again. alan underhill, your bag is first. then, who knows?
