Had a short session with Fred yesterday, just worked on challenges and tiltless strings. It was good to have a session that was focused on strings instead of just one or two moves, but it was freaking exhausting & I sweated out a few buckets. Then I started to feel sick towards the end and had to bail on the session.

EDIT: Kicking today after work (approximately 5:30 - I should be able to leave at 5 & I don't think it'll take me too long to get there, unless there's a cubs game or something). Kicking at Oak Street beach.

Kicked Tuesday with Meinard & Thursday with Freddie.

Its too bad it didn't work out to have a larger session on Tuesday. Stupid weather. We kicked in front of the Roosevelt U. dorms, under the overhang by the entrance. I started working on smear>ducking butterfly but had problems getting it sealed as well as I would like. Did my usual stuff, some tiltless strings, some double-dexes to start runs... attempted barrage for the first time, think I can hit it soon, but I'm worried about what all these double dexes are gonna do to my knees. But then again barrage and pdx barrage are really cool...

Yesterday Freddie brought his camera to the session, and I played like shit while it was on. I felt really tense and stiff, partially cause my lower back is hurting a little, but mostly I think it was mental - trying to play really great on camera but not playing to my strengths.

So the tape ran out and I loosened up and eventually started to play better. I footed flip DATW while muttering "tricycle lunches," but I had to use "Gabba Gabba Hey" for the seal. Yes this makes no sense. Apparently the look on my face when I hit it was pretty hilarious. Hit flip terrage, all the other usual two-dexes, also hit Parkwalk again. Worked on smear>ducking butterfly some more, started to get it pretty easily with a seal. Also smear>ducking mirage, smear>dimwalk & smear>ducking clipper.

Some little kid fell off her razor scooter. Too bad that wasn't on camera.

New trick  : flipside symposium pixie.

Also worked on flip DLO & backside smear.

I need to work on:

 BOPs
 Throwing some 3-adds into my tiltless strings
 Guiltless combos (I'm thinking smear>ducking butterfly, ducking mirage>dimwalk, pdx mirage>PLO, & DATW>butterfly would be good places to start)
 Bailing to butterfly instead of clipper, and bailing to pdx. mirage instead of ss mirage

As we were walking out of the park, a clearly very intoxicated young woman and her friend(s?) were walking towards Freddie & me. The drunk one squeezed my arm and said "you're sexy." I had to try not to laugh, because the first thing that I thought was "skanks for the memories."

And this, my friends, is as a good an explanation as any for the dry spell I'm in. Goddamned standards... for solace I will quote the immortal words of KRS-ONE: "girls look so good but their brain is not ready - I don't know! I'd rather talk to a woman cause her mind is more steady, so here we go."

Also, I'm not a musical maniac, nor am I a b-boy fanatic.

So Taste starts today, I've got my gear with me in case people are gonna kick. But if I don't see anything on modified or hear anything from anyone I'm just gonna go home after work and maybe kick in the 60618 depending on what Freddie's doing. Yes I guess that is an ultimatum. If I don't get a response to my ultimatum, I'm gonna nuke Japan!!!

How many times has that happened now? It is a shame. Its the great shame of our nation... no wait that's Dick Cheney. Or is it the Supreme Court gutting Brown v. Board?

Or is it... fuck, what's the great shame of our nation again?

congrats on the challenges. The drill is legover to opposite foot> set plant same foot legover> repeat

Ah. Cool, then I can do it. Haven't worked on any Tapping or Atomic concepts much yet.

Kicked Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I guess I've got a lot to summarize so this post is gonna be long. Prepare yourself!

Friday was a 60618 session with Freddie and Tom. I worked on my combos mentioned in some post up yonder, hit all the following:

 smear> ducking butterfly
 smear> ducking clipper
 ducking mirage> dimwalk
 pdx. mirage> plo (should've worked on this both sides but forgot)

Felt pretty good to be like "I need to hit these combos" and then just bust them out that night. They weren't that hard, but ducking mirage> dimwalk is more challenging because I'm not that consistent with my ducking mirages. Hit all my two-dexes except flip DATW, (and I guess Phoenix, but I'm not counting that one yet). Bailing to butterfly after those two-dexes was pretty easy... its all mental, as long as the set is OK.

Also had two four-contact guiltless strings: butterfly> pdx mirage> plo> butterfly; plo> plo> butterfly> butterfly. Those are my longest guiltless strings yet.

There was a movie being shown in the park, and a PA system was pumping a bunch of hits from early 90s rock radio. Nothing too atrocious, but a lot of songs I've heard a few thousand times too many. Still, its nice to kick to music. Freddie got his video camera out and we all took turns trying to bust big on camera. I was less successful than Tom or Fred. I tried Backside Smear a bunch but it hurt my leg. Tried some other shit but nothing too spectacular. Did hit PS Mirage with a weird seal (didn't come off my foot) and it probably looked like shit. Also walked like a robot.

Freddie hit a new five on camera - pixie ducking osis. Tom hit spinning paradox whirl (I think?). Meanwhile a bunch of skaters showed up and were skating around behind us while we kicked. I'm looking forward to seeing that footage.

And then Saturday was crazy. I was awakened at about 11 by my phone ringing, it was a friend of mine who wanted to know if I'd help her move. She was moving out of a third-floor walk-up (when I sprained my ankle I hopped all the way up those stairs, which sucked a lot more than this would). So anyway, I helped her get about 3/4 moved out and then another dude showed up so I decided to head to Taste to kick. But first I ate at Flash Taco. Mmm-mmm.

On my way to Taste I was standing up against the doors on the Blue Line, because it was so crowded. Maybe I was leaning against them too much or just bumped into them, because the doors opened behind me while the train was moving. Everybody else noticed before I did - before I knew what was happening a bunch of people grabbed on to my left arm to pull me away from the door. I held on to the railing with my other hand, which basically held this woman (with a baby in her arms) in place, and I tried to kick the door shut (didn't work).

I tried to get loose of the people so I could get the doors closed, but they were pulling me away from the doors... I was like "this isn't an airplane, I'm not gonna get sucked out!" But you know thankfully nobody was hurt, it could have been pretty horrible, but everybody was fine. Looking back, I'm really grateful all those people grabbed me (and the other folks near the doors), and wish I could find some way to show my gratitude. Sky-writing, perhaps?

So after possibly nearly dying (I do it all the time), I got to Taste, and hacked with Zeke and some good kickers: two high-schoolish-aged kids who could toe-stall & flying clipper, then another guy who could atw & pendulum. After a while the atw/pendulum guy was like "do you know the Inner Circle?" 8) He had talked to Tom via MySpace or something like that, so that's how he knew.

After about an hour of hacking, I had to head out, cause Zeke's Reile & I were going to the Violent Femmes. They were great. Totally worth waiting through the godawful opener. Dave Tamlin or something like that... if there was a vomiting smiley, I'd use that right now. The Femmes played a few songs I recognized to begin with, then a bunch of stuff from their newer albums that I didn't recognize, then closed with a bunch of stuff from their first CD, which was pretty terrific.

I'm really happy with all the concerts I've been to lately: TV on the Radio, MC Front-a-Lot, Heiruspecs, Bjork, Superchunk, Violent Femmes... maybe I'm forgetting something? And, Pitchfork and Aesop Rock are still coming up. And Cracker's playing at Taste so I'll probably catch them for free. Oh yeah.

And, finally, I was at Taste yesterday for about six hours - played maybe three hours in a hack circle, which wasn't that bad, just really big at times. And of course my friend Churney was there, pissing me off. Somebody said something like "this guy's a pro" (referring to me) and Churney was all "no, he's an amateur. The pros are way better than he is." Technically true, you dick. Then I kicked somebody in the chest, one of the hackers I've kicked with at the fests for the past three years - think his name is Giovanni - felt pretty bad about that. Wish I could've kicked Churney instead. Then I would've felt great.

Meinard & Freddie & Freestyled after that, guess I played OK. Just couldn't get flip Terrage for some reason, like I forgot how to do it. Oh well, my legs were pretty tired by then anyway. Other than that I played OK, had a 16 contact tiltless string towards the end of the session. Freestlyed for a little under two hours I think. My legs aren't that sore today, more like 'fatigued'. Still planning on kicking after work in the 60618, though. Now I gotta do some work.

Oh hey, sorry for the short notice - what are people doing for watching the fireworks? Because I've got an open invitation to watch them from my company's Michigan Ave. building - impeccable views. I can bring friends & family, but I've gotta let them know by noon tomorrow who will be coming.

If you want to watch them from this building (Michigan & Van Buren) then you have to let me know by 11:30 tomorrow.

I will be looking down on you and the rest of the masses. Harumph!

I will also be drawn like a New Yorker Cartoon.

Drilled BOPs last night! After lots of talk I finally buckled down and did it. Probably close to 100 attempts at weakside butterfly, maybe 15 - 20 were decent. Some flip osii as well, maybe like 40 attempts with like 5 good ones. If I can just keep doing this like 3 times a week for a while, I'll get there.

Freddie shot more video. I'm looking forward to seeing the eventual result.

EDIT: My friend Tyronne's birthday is this Friday, some kind of celebration to be held Saturday, so I'm going up to Wisconsin this weekend. No Tasty Taste after all. Probably kick Wednesday, Thursday & Friday though - location depending on if people go to Taste & what else they've got going on for the 4th.

EDIT: This is now complete.

Wait, is this ^ one challenge or three? If its three challenges then I've hit the first part (pixie muted clipper) and could probably hit the last tonight. Been working on ducking legover... getting closer but still haven't had that "a-ha!" moment. Where I get pulled through a mirror and run from a motorcycle gang in a comic book.

Kicked last night for about an hour, drilled BOPs. Weakside butterfly mostly, which is getting better. I think I got clued in to the motion for osis a little bit better, but I'm still having a hard time actually physically doing it on my weakside. Need to open up a jar of ankle-crank. Or trucker crank, possibly.

Had a lot of energy for some unknown reason. All the trucker crank? Yeah right. Once I was up all night on Dexedrine, writing a paper, and tried to kick a hack in the morning. I thought my heart was gonna explode. Can't imagine playing footbag on serious stimulants. Or doing anything else on them... well maybe humping.

The session ended before I got through all my double-dexes, which is fine. I need to re-think that aspect of my drills anyway, and I'm sure my knees won't mind a few days without Terrage & DATW.

New links:

 Osis> far osis> far legover
 Osis> near pickup
 PLO> weak butterfly

Kicking at Taste after work. I'll be there between 5:30 & 6. Go check out Fred's video!

Fun session at Taste yesterday, Zeke, Freddie, Abe, Meinard, Tom, and myself. I played for about 2 hours & 45 minutes. I think Freddie got there at like 4 or something & played until almost 9... that's fucking ridiculous.

I had a tiltless string that was just under 20 contacts. Can't remember exactly what I started it with, I think there was a ducking clipper, a far osis, maybe a diving clipper or something too. When I got to around 7 or 8 contacts I went into my tiltless drills, got through like 11 more contacts with those before I dropped. Definitely my best string to date.

Actually, I had quite a few 10+ contact tiltless strings but most of those relied on my drills. So on the one hand the drills benefit my game. On the other hand I know its making my strings repetitive.

Did a lot of far osis stuff, having fun with that move. Also worked on some guiltless links: symp mirage> symp pixie, smear> all kinds of shit, various 2-dex> butterfly. Had a hard time with ducking mirage> dimwalk again.

Hit the usual group of 2-dexes. No flip DATW, Parkwalk, or Phoenix, though. Tried Barfly, Barrage, & Double Fairy. They're all like DOD, I can get the dexes but have no time left to re-position my body (if necessary) & seal the move. Barrage is probably the most likely - I think I can fix this by setting the bag back towards/across my body. Not sure about Double Fairy, I came as close as I ever have and it was painful (in the hip/butt). Read whatever you like into that last sentence. Barfly is way off, DOD is closer but I need a better flip clipper before I start to work on it seriously. And BOPs are more important to me right now anyway.

At the end of the session I finally hit  Ducking Legover. I tried around 15 attempts in a row that were all agonizingly close, footing it, overdexing it, etc. Really satisfying to hit it, but my left hip hurt like a bitch and I was finished. Well, actually did one more move afterwards: PS Mirage.

Then Tom, Freddie & I went to Potbelly's. I'm gonna have to switch over to the Pizza sub. I ranted about the recent stress from my job for like a minute and half or something, and then thought "wow, that was nice to get out... and moving on." Whateva.

Kicking tonight at Taste. Then I'm going to Wisconsin tomorrow morning, so I guess I'll miss this weekend's shred & Midwest Regionals. Small chance I'll play Sunday night but I think I'll probably be exhausted by the time I get back into town... I don't anticipate that I'll get caught up on my sleep this weekend.

Oh man, zip code madness. Thanks for the compliment on the blog, Zac! I try to keep it interesting, to compensate for my boring trick selection. It helps me keep all my footbag thoughts organized, too. Like my 7th grade trapper keeper:

Thanks Tom! I was really happy with it too, especially because it started out without links I've drilled to death. Nice & spontaneous.

Greslie, I left a message in your blog about this weekend. I'll give you a call, it'd be awesome to kick with you. If we do kick, can we both wear cheese heads? You've got your state-mandated cheese head and back up cheese head, correct?

sadly... we don't have cheeseheads. We just have bear heads. Real ones. From the Bears we've killed over the years out of pure and utter hatred of the ursa family of mammals.
