if anyone ever read the stuff I hit way back when... I was mostly wrong about alot of it. like, osis bsos like mad, that should have been "scooping behind the back throw bsos like mad" etc...
on the other side of the coin....
coming to worlds has given me a different perspective on footbag. I'm thirty. one darn trick can take me so so long to hit once, let alone in a string. these dudes are hitting stuff mid string that I will most liikely never hit ever. for the last couple of days I have been thinking footbag retirement. after this last night at worlds I was convinced I was done. then Dylan Fry invited me to victoria to come shred with him. soon afterward I met Up with Jon Paige and he tossed me the bag, not knowing what was going on in my head. he made me hit pdx whirl. and he hit blender. it was fun. I know that when I go home, I will once again be solo.
at first when I began seeing the pros and am's pulling off effortless sevens, I thought it was so fantastic to see. later I felt so inadequate to be there. when on command these guys can pull off real awkward PS tricks first try or second, and I fight as hard as I can for osis or pdx mirage or some other 2 or three add... gee...
im thinkin... yeah, I may have some natural talent at footbag, and I may be above average at footbag compared to most other human beings and practice enough to get consistent at some of the tricks, still I am below average compared to most other FOOTBAGGERS, even with practice. occasionally I will bust a new trick and it is fun.... but practicing the daylight out of some 2 add and making little progress OR trying to get a string to work with very little progress is so so so so frustrating.

Just don't let it get to you.
I decided that if a kid could spend a year picking it up this fast, then with the right stretching and personal discipline I could too. I kick a lot myself and it is helpful. Kicking with others though, having them challenge one another- that is important too.

Sorry to hear about your revelation, but sadly its a common one. There are a few threads about people losing interest after going to a big footbag jam.
It takes soooo many hours to get good at footbag. I've calculated that I've played probably around 350 hours (1 year) of this game. But that's nothing. I'm sure people like DC or JM have played like 3000 or more. Am I really gonna have to play 10 more years to get as good as them? I don't know.
But for some reason I keep playing. Its something to do. Its good exercise and I like endorphins.
If you can find something better to do with your time, go for it. In the end footbag is just a game. You don't have to take it seriously to play. I think we tend to take it too far for some reason.
Just have fun and stay healthy!

yeah, I like footbag a whole lot still. I don't know about quitting. I also don't know about trying to progress to the uttermost either.

Do you play for your own enjoyment, or do you play to impress other people? Do you only enjoy things if you're as good/better than the other people you play with?
If you do play for your own enjoyment, and you don't need to be the best to enjoy things, you should obviously keep playing. If you play for other people, or to be better than other people, I don't really care what you choose.
Anyway I guess the real question you should be asking yourself is; "Why do you play footbag?"

If you enjoy how you feel when you play, then play.
If you enjoy playing because you're better than the other person in the circle (although I know you are the lone shredder where you are from), then quit. There's always someone better, at anything.
Personally, I play cause I like it. My strings or my tricks don't always click, but when they do, I smile. It feels good.

i finally arrived in combuco in north brazil...really enjoy the beach, the weather, the wind and hopefully soon kitesurfing (still some troubles to get my equipment from austria) !
now i had time to read your blog again...and i have to say - i'm shocked

i have met, not as many as you, but still some of my footbag idols in the short 3 days i have been at worlds...but hey DUDE - you showed me the kindness of the community - you insprired me most on this worlds...not because you made me this (unbelievable) gift...NO - your MOTIVATION inspired me soooo much - after i had to leave...i told myself - damn...i should shred like paul...he's the first on the eventside and his footbag motivation is AMAZING...i should take him as motivation idol !
probably guys like us will never shred like vaska...but that's not the reason to play footbag...it's just about fun and pushing your own limits!!!
i saw your firstday video...hitting pdx whirl fs - props! i thought thats maybe possible...i tried it hard and finally hit it first time!
