Paul Austin's footbook
heck yeah man. congrats again on blender. hit it flip.
at worlds I hit:
DYNO BS
WHIRLING RAKE (It was supposed to be whirling mirage... I guess tim said it was more rakey than miragey)
FAIRY CLIP
FIARY MIRAGE
FAIRY OSIS
CLIP>WHIRL>MIRAGE>CLIP>WHIRL>MIRAGE
TAP
CRISPY TORQUE
BUTTERFLY>RIPWALK BS
PDX WHIRL BS
SPINNING CLIPPER
BLENDER>OSIS
if anyone ever read the stuff I hit way back when... I was mostly wrong about alot of it. like, osis bsos like mad, that should have been "scooping behind the back throw bsos like mad" etc...
on the other side of the coin....
coming to worlds has given me a different perspective on footbag. I'm thirty. one darn trick can take me so so long to hit once, let alone in a string. these dudes are hitting stuff mid string that I will most liikely never hit ever. for the last couple of days I have been thinking footbag retirement. after this last night at worlds I was convinced I was done. then Dylan Fry invited me to victoria to come shred with him. soon afterward I met Up with Jon Paige and he tossed me the bag, not knowing what was going on in my head. he made me hit pdx whirl. and he hit blender. it was fun. I know that when I go home, I will once again be solo.
at first when I began seeing the pros and am's pulling off effortless sevens, I thought it was so fantastic to see. later I felt so inadequate to be there. when on command these guys can pull off real awkward PS tricks first try or second, and I fight as hard as I can for osis or pdx mirage or some other 2 or three add... gee...
im thinkin... yeah, I may have some natural talent at footbag, and I may be above average at footbag compared to most other human beings and practice enough to get consistent at some of the tricks, still I am below average compared to most other FOOTBAGGERS, even with practice. occasionally I will bust a new trick and it is fun.... but practicing the daylight out of some 2 add and making little progress OR trying to get a string to work with very little progress is so so so so frustrating.
brain divided. crossroad reached. decision at hand.
I don't know
either way...
Lee, I wish I could have said goodbye to you... I hope you make BAP and make your footbag dreams a reality. give others hope.

Hey man,
My name is Ian. I am 29 and I have been playing footbag for over 14 years. I know how you feel though because I took a few years off during my associates degree, etc, and came back. I went from feeling like an part of a community to a pita. It really got to me that kids kicking under a year were hitting harder tricks than me.
Just don't let it get to you.
I decided that if a kid could spend a year picking it up this fast, then with the right stretching and personal discipline I could too. I kick a lot myself and it is helpful. Kicking with others though, having them challenge one another- that is important too.
I have posted repeatedly in the last few months about how frustrated I am about not being able to hit my left side world. I am jealous that you can hit P-whirl and blenders!
Your videos of worlds were great but even the videos of you putting yourself out there to get feedback was a big help.
Keep your head up soldier! Nice ta' meetcha.

Sorry to hear about your revelation, but sadly its a common one. There are a few threads about people losing interest after going to a big footbag jam.
It takes soooo many hours to get good at footbag. I've calculated that I've played probably around 350 hours (1 year) of this game. But that's nothing. I'm sure people like DC or JM have played like 3000 or more. Am I really gonna have to play 10 more years to get as good as them? I don't know.
But for some reason I keep playing. Its something to do. Its good exercise and I like endorphins.
If you can find something better to do with your time, go for it. In the end footbag is just a game. You don't have to take it seriously to play. I think we tend to take it too far for some reason.
Just have fun and stay healthy!

yeah, I like footbag a whole lot still. I don't know about quitting. I also don't know about trying to progress to the uttermost either.
Like, kicking with Lee Van Sickle was so great, but then again, it was like, dude, I don't think I ever seen him miss an osis, no matter how far of a reach it was or whatever. just little stuff like that... It's like, that is little stuff ... and I don't get it. sure I can do like.... 1 out of 3 osis.
whatver, enough blah. so before, I was all talking about ... AM I WILLING TO DO WHAT IT TAKES?
no.
them guys are though.
the question for me really is: AM I WILLING TO GO ______ FAR?
maybe that is every single one of them guys question.
am I willing to do what it takes to hit ________
and then
am I willing to do what it takes to hit ________
you fill in the blank.
if the answer is yes, what IS what it takes? then do it.
if no. where do you go from there?
smp same side paradox.
LOL
by the way, i flew home to michigan from florida and left my car, work, and house keys in orlando.

blow blow blow!
Anyway I guess the real question you should be asking yourself is; "Why do you play footbag?"
Do you play for your own enjoyment, or do you play to impress other people? Do you only enjoy things if you're as good/better than the other people you play with?
If you do play for your own enjoyment, and you don't need to be the best to enjoy things, you should obviously keep playing. If you play for other people, or to be better than other people, I don't really care what you choose.

If you enjoy how you feel when you play, then play.
If you enjoy playing because you're better than the other person in the circle (although I know you are the lone shredder where you are from), then quit. There's always someone better, at anything.
Personally, I play cause I like it. My strings or my tricks don't always click, but when they do, I smile. It feels good.

Sounds like you figured out one of my favorite aspects of footbag, the tight community. Sounds like you liked it too.HXCFOOTBAG wrote:let me tell ya,

It was way cool having people I've never met, whom I look up to in footbag, ALREADY KNOW WHO I AM!!! so pimp.
yeah, thanks for reminding me. that was so incredible. that pattern kept happening through the week at worlds. kind of a reverse of that happened.
I sat next to a guy, he said, "hi, I don't think we've met" I said "I'm Paul"
he said "I'm David". "Nice to meet you david" I replied. "my last name is Clavens" he said. "Oh, I've heard of you before. cool." LOL

DOM!
good to hear from you!
OK, the retire thing....
I realized what was going on.....
let me direct a statement toward the one who was discouraging me.
"I now know why you were discouraging me. It is the same reason you have discouraged me in all of the other areas in my life. Your devices have worked in the past and it almost worked this time. I will continue to make differences in people's lives. I will continue to use my gifts and talents to change the world for the better. I am not sorry to say that I will not quit"
so today I hit MONSTER

OOPS.
sorry. I will have to put that up tonight.
MY BAD. getting home was hecktic (lost my keys in florida)
but for now I have to leave.
anyone remember I put up a post about how osis really should be?
well, I should have learned from paul gressett. he really does understand osis. he just had to take some of his own medicine.
REAL osis school:
clip>osis>mirage>far clip>osis>mirage
clip>osis>whirl bs
butterfly>osis bs
HOLLY thank you, and it was Nice meeting you as well, and concerning Lee, I totally agree. have you made any modifications to moshers tail and called it "Holly's Tale" yet?

I've tried to upload the circle comp.... three times and it fails every time.
something is wrong, I must figure it out.
sorry that it's not available yet.
footbag dot org always says that I either pressed the back button or that I am trying to "hack" thier website and that they do prosecute. uh, I'm just trying to do what I have always done....
