Crossbody doof? (Nope, it's scary monster!)

Post by Mathochist »

Here's something I've been toying with. Since I can't hit doof, I can at least attempt the position and then wrap the bent ankle behind the support leg into what I believe to be a crossbody position, in a sort of outside monster.
Some questions for the forum:
Is it crossbody?
Who else has hit it?
In the admittedly unlikely event I hit this first, is it an invention/do I get to name it? (If so, it's "dragoon".)
Otherwise, what's it called?

A pic and a vid for your discernment:

The video quality is less than ideal so I included the pose pic.
What do you think?

Fuck yeah -- that's the sickest stall! 8O

I've conceptualized this many times but was nowhere near flexible enough to do it. Jon Schneider told me a while ago it was called 'scary monster'. Not sure if he's hit it but that's the impression I got. Maybe ask him.

Props Rob.

Yeah, awesome!

I was frame by framing that like crazy. Looks so bizarre.

That might be scary monster, I'm not shore though, I've never seen scary monster before so I couldn't tell you. It is not cross body, i know that. That is a really cool stall, props to you.

Yep, its called Scary Monster.

Nope, I've never really hit it. Not to my satisfaction anyway.

What some of you may be missing from the video and picture is (if I am not mistaken) which way his head is pointed when doing this. In the photo, for instance, its over (or under) his right arm. If the same applies, then in the video, he'd be looking over (or under) his left arm. In my opinion, this particular body position is BEYOND cross-body. I've often thought that a stall like that should perhaps be thought of as a DOUBLE CROSS-BODY.

Think about it for a second: with some move elements, you can obvious do more than a single example of that element in a given trick. You can do a single DEX, or a double DEX. You can do a single BODY element, or a double BODY element (like a double spin, for instance). With some move elements, though, this would seem to never apply. How could you have a single move that had mutiple delays? Or a single move that had multiple unusual surfaces? Or a single move that had multiple cross-body elements? I don't know, but I think Scary Monster kind of approaches an answer to that very last question... You've got to wrap your leg across your body in front of your leg (wouldn't ordinarily count as a cross-body, I know) but then bring the same leg across the body again behind the support leg. That one stalling leg goes in front of then behind the support leg. Across in front, and then across behind.

I used to try to practice this, and quickly gave up when my knee started hurting. Very nice job, Creel. Keep it up, make it smoother, more consistent. Own it. Hit it at random in the middle of a string of shuffle-moves and blow some minds. But not if your knee starts to hurt.

Yessir that's a Scary Monster alright. That's ooooolllllddddd sssccchhhooolll. Kenny Shults invented it way back in the day. I saw him hit it so nicely back at CSS2. He hit it straight to a stall and stopped though. I like how you get it to flow.

It's not cross-body per se. Keep in mind though that when you are talking about cross-body you are talking about a "body" movement that adds difficulty. So while Scary Monster isn't cross-body it is a body movement that adds difficulty.

Thank you, Splint, for answering the "who's hit it?" question. I mean, if it was named then someone has to have hit it, and I really wanted to know who.

My thoughts on crossbodiness:
What defines crossbody is that the delay foot is not in front of but behind the support leg. This is clearly the case in both clipper and scary monster. Suppose without loss of generality that I catch the footbag on my right foot. In clipper form, my right leg would pass behind the left leg in the natural way. In scary monster form, my right leg would pass behind the left leg from the other direction, going the long way around. They are both crossbody. QED

Jon's comments had me consider this from another angle (ha!). I don't think it counts as double crossbody any more than inspinning counts as double spinning. Just as inspinning is harder than spinning in the gyro direction, scary monster is harder than clipper, but not enough so to merit another add.

Thank you all very much for the props. It means a good deal for me as an intermediate type shredder to get such recognition. I'll see if I can get some video soon that shows where my head looks to clear up any confusion.
