I'm not interested in supplements or anything, and like I said I don't know anything, so I've been eating meat and whole grains after. Should I do something different?

Also I had heard the thing about working out when you wake before eating, and that it burns 300% more calories or something? But then I also heard that this doesn't work for cardio, just weight-training... something like that. Can you clarify?
"Is it best to have protein and carbs after a workout?
-Yes, you need to replace lost protein and glucose stores.

"I've been eating meat and whole grains after, should I do something different?"

-It's good your eating both protein and carbohydrates after a workout, however your choice of protein and carbohydrates may be far off. Post exercise, the body requires a quick source of both. For protein, a whey, milk, chicken, or egg meal works best because it digests faster into the bloodstream. For carbohydrates, a naturally sugary source works best like sugar, white bread, gatorade, or fruit.

"Also I had heard the thing about working out when you wake before eating, and that it burns 300% more calories or something? But then I also heard that this doesn't work for cardio, just weight-training... something like that. Can you clarify?"

-Upon waking, glycogen stores are depleted and low because sleep requires massive amounts of stored energy to replenish tissue and damage taken during the day. If, prior to breakfast and replenishment of these carbs, you lift weights, run, or play footbag; glucose cannot be a sufficient energy because of it's lower state. Thus, fat becomes the most readily available energy source because it's atp (energy) yield is higher than proteins. So technically your not burning any more calories while you exercise, but your source of fuel is changed. Therefore, some people will think or have the realization that they are burning "more" calories. The truth is your not, it's just taken from fat and therefore feels that way. (Note: If you exercise this early in the morning you will continue to burn more calories even at a resting state throughout the rest of the day.)

I recently pinched/strained a nerve in my neck, such that I cannot turn my head quickly to the left, and even when I turn my head slowly, it feels weird. What's the best way to recover? I took a few days off, and have started doing neck stretches, but I am curious if you advocate me eating anything in particular or taking more time off. Thanks Pee Wee.

Aaron, I just wanted to jump in real quick and say that I think it's cool that you're willing to take some time to give people your opinions on these topics. Props.

For a 10 day race, is it feasible to eat a pound of butter and a handful of crackers each day ? Are there health consequences to such a diet, or is it okay for short term use ?

Is there any way to reduce muscle size besides getting your body to basically eat it's own muscle?

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

If you do not use the muscles they will atrophy. Why would anyone ever want less muscle though?

I wanted less muscle before. Apparently I build up pretty well if I work out just a little bit. I didn't like being an Amazon woman. But now I feel like I'm losing too much strength. I want to get back into it some.

Only getting your nutrients from crackers and butter for ten days in a row in itself is extremely restricting. In addition, running the entire time is going to require even more calories and proper nutrition. My guess is that a person following this diet and trying to do the race wouldn't last past day four. They simply wouldn't have the energy from those two substances.

Yes. Muscle size can increase and decrease depending on the amount of blood in and around the muscle cells. If you are running and have large muscles, they will shrink temporarily so your cardiovascular system has the blood it needs to oxygenate the body. I recommend training a muscle or muscle group from 12-16 repetitions if your goal is muscular endurance and not size. Losing muscle with reduce your resting metabolic rate, or the number of calories you burn per day. Muscles run the show when it comes to metabolism.

I can't diagnose this one Ken. There are many small muscles in the head, neck, and shoulder girdle. Keep in mind, a nerve problem is serious and is usually related with uncontrolled numbness or tingling, in which a neurologist should be brought in. A strain is when a muscle is pulled beyond its elasticity /flexibility, a sprain is when a ligament (bone to bone connective tissue) is pulled.

This is the first time i've checked in on this part of the forum for quite a while, and the first time i've seen this thread. other than the little slip up above, Aaron you're doing a great job! Do you plan on taking your Kin degree into the education field? Seems like you have a knack for it.

Hah, I guess that's what happens when you second guess yourself and hit post. lol. Thanks for the support man. I'm totally into fitness these days and loving helping other people out with at least as much information as I know.

yo whatup hey i was wondering what kind of cross training you recommend for footbag that isnt lifting or weight training or anything like that. i go jogging once or twice a week and do some bodyweight excercises while i stretch to warm up before a session but i dont really know exactly what i should be doing or when. in general i think i need to work on my core strength and maybe some uppper body as well because those muscles dont get much attention from footbagging alone. thx in advance

I'm not a vegan myself, or a nutritionalist, but good proteins without meat in them that I know would include:

Soy, Nuts, Legumes, Seeds, Beans, and Avocado.

Diversity is extremely important. You should eat a variety of foods each and every day. Not all foods present the amino acid profile necessary to completely use all protein in a food. An egg is the best example of a complete protein, but other foods can be combined to form a complete protein. Like beans and rice. Point said, each a wide variety of carbohydrates and protein each and every day, don't worry about too much fat intake. Fat from these sources is generally healthy and necessary for the body.

What's your breakfast routine, and if that's radically different from somebody who's NOT a bodybuilder, what would you suggest for someone else. Pretty much everywhere I look there's conflicting information at breakfast.

I pretty much eat oatmeal with a bit of brown sugar on it with either eggs or whey for breakfast. My biggest recommendation is just eat something, the largest meal should be breakfast.
