kicked last night in the barn. it was effing cold out again, but i started the heater enough in advance that I was fairly comfortable. sadly, I will have to wear foo foo running tights going forward. even sadder, because i kick so often, the running tights usually only get washed once per week. they're quite "ripe" by the end of the week. i know, i know, too much information. :?

anyhow, i just did spins the entire time. god they're annoying. it's like this: i can spin well enough that most players would say "bob can spin", but i know the truth... i'm a spinning faker. a sham. a lie!!!!!!!!! woah is meeeeeeeeee. My spins are jive. Lame.

[Now, picture some inspirational movie music with a "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going" type of feel to it.]

Spins! I will own youuuuuuuuuu

ha ha.. yeah, so I'm taking tonight off from footbag. I'm clearly not 100% right in the head at this moment.

omg, i'm still cracking up.. "little bitch of the year" is like the greatest jab ever. that is instantly part of my vocabulary. I'm honestly thinking of situations where I can use that tonight. ah shit, that's funnnnnnnnny

had a nice weekend

Friday night, got some free wood pallets from beer distributor.. poplar! beer dist has good pallets (either oak or poplar usually) because of the weight they have to carry. I have some good free wood built up for my business now.

Have really been refining my barn renovation plans. It's funny how if you give your mind a lot of time to work through an idea you eventually figure out better and better ways of doing something. The mind is an amazing thing. The plan I have for the barn at this stage is so useful, cost effective, efficiently designed, value enhancing... it's just really a good design, and a doable design at this point. I need about $4,000 to get it done (well... $4000 and a ton of manual labor). Aiming for spring time.

Saturday, finished a long list of 'get ready for winter' chores that i had. And played with kids a lot.

Sunday, shredded with drew. Barn is better for practice than for shred. Just because the limited space makes you a little bit wary at all times. But it was fun. My legs were pretty burnt from way too much footbag last week (I think it ended up being something like last Friday through Tuesday every day, skip wednesday, thursday and Friday again, skip saturday, shred sunday.. that's like 7-8 sessions in about 10 days.). Between burnt legs and having spent the last several sessions repeatedly spinning, I wasn't having mega runs, but overall, wasn't too bad. Drew is making tons of improvement, and he takes instruction very well. I also explained to him how your game can be built entirely around a couple moves for starters - especially if they're the right moves. He'll be a natural whirl, torque, dyno, and drifter player. Those are good ones to build a game around, so he'll be skooling some drills I gave him.

caleb is going to shred with me in pittsburgh end of this week! unless that biznitch bails  ha ha, he won't now that I called him out on it in my safe lil blog. So I guess I should shred the rest of this week instead of practicing spins. That's cool because I was getting bored of spinning.

i dunno what else

I also don't have a car cause I'm poor...

Haha, so....yeah, I'd need a ride. I'm going to be internet-less from pretty much tomorrow morning till saturday evening too, so let me know. Or, I'll just call you guys on Saturday and see what's up.

Hopefully something works out. I'd love to play footbag, even if it means having to hang out with you, Riefer.

shut up you skinny fuck

I pm'd caleb to try to work it out - I'm hoping he can pick you up on his way out to my place. I'll call you later too, I still have your phone # saved from my last trip.

Totally unrelated topic:

Ok, so I'm officially quitting the rest of the forum as of today. There are certain areas that I will probably continue to read for awhile, but I'm done posting anywhere other than in my blog, and in the blogs of a couple of people that I've become friends with. I'm just sick of the assholes, the idiots, the drama queens, the "I'm good at hacky sack, so I rule" types. etc.

I'm a pretty disciplined guy, so I think I can quit this vice too. I'll give it some time, see how it goes, and I think I will eventually move my blog out of here too.

In which case, I'd have to start emailing with people I'm friends with. Which is funny because I never email anyone anymore really. At least not in the footbag "community".

Playing footbag is so fun, so much of the rest of it is such shit. Funny how your opinions of some things in life come full circle back to their original points of view. The good news is that you can continue to play footbag without having to subject yourself to all the other shit - they're mutually exclusive. Thank goodness.

Please don't move your blog. Now that the Hackrifice guys are gone, the only blogs I regularly read are yours and SCFs. And other than blogs, I only really look at the vid section, and its been slim pickings there lately too.

And while it's probably not necessary to say this, I just wanted to remind you that modified really doesn't reflect the footbag community. I hung out with Ian and SCF last weekend, tomorrow I'm spending thanksgiving with Age, and next weekend I'm hanging with Bruce and NYFA. I think the community just comes off badly on modified because kids are bored, and sometimes language barriers make the international players come off sounding harsher than they are. I guess the point I'm getting at is that while I understand (and share) your frustration with modified, it's important not to equate modified with footbag, or vice versa.

kicked with caleb while in pittsburgh. was so great to see him, we haven't hung out in a LONG time. was great to meet his girlfriend and chill afterwards. we both played ehhhhhh whatever. But that wasn't the point, just having fun, catching up.

off to san fran on business tomorrow. ugh. I hate being away from my family. It's only 1 to 2 times per year though.

anyhow, no kicking until the weekend, and no blogging either. later modified

hi everyone, i'm back home after crazy week of travel for business. kicking tomorrow and looking forward to being back on normal schedule of exercise, food, sleep etc.

still haven't smoked

12/09/08
kicked last night.. 28 degrees outside, 40 degrees in the barn.. had to wear full gear to be able to play. but it was fun. almost busted my other ankle, but I was able to fall quickly enough to avoid really cranking it. switching up my practice style again. I think it's actually good to keep the body confused by continually trying new practice methods.

Anyhow, my new method is basically that I wrote down about 20 tricks that are staples to my game (or should be staples) but are either weaker than they should be in terms of being able to link them, have a major weak side, or are not quite 9 out of 10 in terms of reliability. When I was playing with Caleb, I was annoyed by missing certain things (and I was also really bored at how few tricks I actually have... it's more noticeable when you're playing with someone far better than you are... but this is to be attacked after my current learning phase). Then I realized that the things I'm missing haven't really been focused on, they've just sort of been included in what I do. So now I'm focusing just on those things.

Example.. I can't hit weakside stepping ss mirage. But last night I hit about 20. Or, my weakside blur takes tons of effort and is very inconsistent. So I hit a bunch of them. Weak drifter isn't terrific, and toe set drifter on both sides isn't that great. So I did a lot of them. etc.

worked out this morning.. ehhhh... cold and dark in the morning = not that motivated

eating well, abstaining from alcohol appropriately (i.e. weekends are ok to drink, rest of time is not), still not smoking

christmas tree and outdoor lights are up.. train around tree is a source of fun and frustration for the kids.

Penn Mutual (my previous company) called me out of the blue and wants to meet with me about a position. whatever, we'll see what they have to say.

Looks like I'll get about a 3-4% raise at year end, and bonus will be about 5% of annual pay (instead of 10%). Not great, but considering the economy, not bad either.

kicked last night. it was 55 degrees! with the heater, 60+ degrees no problem. It was really nice to not be freezing.

continued with my 'list of staples' approach which is really a 'list of things that SHOULD be staples' approach. it's a good approach for right now. I'm sick of not being great at these things, and therefore I never feel quite ready to start the next thing. After awhile, I'll practice some other way I'm sure, but right now this seems like an approach that is working (and isn't too frustrating... my 'winter brain' is not nearly as patient as summer/spring/fall brain).

man, all i can think about is the barn renovation. but it's so hard to come up with the $$$ that I need to do it right now. Although I did find out that my family is going together to get me an air compressor and framing nail gun for christmas. So that's a big saver for me, and a crucial tool to being able to rebuild the barn. the barn is going to be so freaking cool when it's done. urgh.

job sucks still. whatever. just a paycheck. although my boss did get smacked down by one of the owners in a big meeting yesterday. that was really satisfying for everyone. ha ha

wife and I had our annual finance planning session last night, and it (as always, but especially so this year) was stressful. So afterwards, we decided to have a couple drinks and do christmas stuff. Specifically, I made the needed alterations to Keegan's existing train table (basically, I swapped in a temporary top so that I could take the existing top and build the new train set on top of it so it will be ready for the big day). Then we spent the evening watching TV, and setting up his train set. It's one of those "Thomas the Train" wooden playsets. It has bridges and houses and hills and a fire station and crossings etc. We glued everything down once we had a configuration that we liked - this is a time consuming but necessary step. For one, it's more fun to play if the tracks aren't sliding around. For another, younger sister = godzilla. That is, she likes to wreck shit. And nothing makes Keegan more upset than when his trains get all fucked up. So, now she can't do that. It turned out awesome, and playing with kids' stuff was just what we needed to bring our stress levels down. It was just a fun, wholesome night.

See ya

heyo Bob!

Seems you're doing well, good to hear. The tips you gave me on butterfly's have helped tremendously, I've also gotten into the habit of starting strings with infinity and linking out. Big progress I feel!

Did you happen to find a shred symposium shirt I may have left in the barn from last session? Can't seem to find it, was one of my good shred shirts :?

Going to be free at all for shred in the upcoming weeks? I'm free from around the 20th of Dec. until at least second weekend of January, maybe longer. Let me know!

peace

yo drew, I'll double check for a shirt like that, but I don't remember seeing one like that (and it would stand out since I don't have one like that).

kicking - I'm home from 12/25/2008 - 01/04/2009!!!! Let's KICK!

oh, and weekend of 20th would probably be open too

-----

saturday, did yard work. ha ha. it was cold, but it had to be cold. I was killing major poison ivy in this HUGE bush that we have (like 6 feet wide by 50 feet long row of forsythia) and I needed the oils to be dormant before I could try to pull the vines out etc. Took me 4 hours to finish trimming and carting away the branches etc. Looks way better.

sunday, kicked. lots of good stuff. still the '20 staples' practice routine for now. It's helpful and is making me sore, so that's good.

holidays are definitely affecting my schedule. food and drink are OK. kicking is pretty good. but sleep and morning exercise isn't 100% great. oh well. it'll be fine.

still not smoking. 38 days down

-----

kids really put you in the christmas spirit. more specifically, Keegan is now old enough to really be pumped about the big day, santa clause, christmas songs, decorations etc. Emi is just sort of awe struck. But keegan sort of gets it. And that's cool. He's also finally old enough to be excited about the **contents** of presents rather than just the wrapping paper (emi will be most interested in the paper and bows etc.). So it's really fun to build it up and be creative trying to make it a fun time of year for them. The train table I made for keegs is amazing and he'll love it.

Last night it was snowing so I took keegan for his first sled ride. Last year he was too little to get any real speed going. He LOVED it. He was uncontrollably giggling throughout the entire thing. I basically just pulled him all around our yard and the neighbor's yard and down some small hills. So much fun. Brings me way back to loving the same thing when I was a kid. I can remember having a rotation of mittens and boots next to the fireplace so I could continually change into dry warm outfits, and get right back out to sled riding. We'd ride until we could barely walk.

After kids were in bed, kicked in the barn. 20 staples practice again. I took inventory of the 20 staples last night - I still believe these are all things I should have down 9 out of 10, but I can now easily see that I'm nowhere near that good at the present time. Sort of sad to realize really. But also motivating. And I'm improving fairly easily on each thing, so this is a good way to attack right now. Eventually, I'll pull easy stuff off and replace with something else.

I think with footbag, it's really easy to focus on what you can do instead of what you can't do. But if you attack something you can't do, it's amazing how fast you get better at it. It's just getting up the nerve to suck at the sport again for awhile that's hard to swallow sometimes. Example.. weakside eggbeaters. I am a total complete absolute spaz when trying this trick. But, I bet in a couple weeks I'll report that I can do it. And a few weeks after that, I'll be pretty darn good at it. And a year from now, it'll be solid. All starting from a spazzy beginning.

It's slow time at work.. Holiday shut down basically. So I discovered the joys of facebook.

i'm so confused :-) I want to see chicago style throw down video! how do I see it?

facebook... last name = r i e fer (people often search for me by e i, but it's i before e except after c blah blah blah)

drew, yes, kicking this weekend, will call you later

kicked last night. 20 staples routine. ouch is that tiring. it's basically an entire practice of stuff that's doable, but not owned. so every portion of my practice takes tons of effort. I've been sore every day after one of these practices, and I almost never get sore. Stuff is improving. I told my self I'd go through the entire list 5 times before figuring out how i want to practice next.

decided to skip pushups/situps etc. until after the holidays. i'm so wiped out and winter blues are upon me. so cutting myself some freaking slack is ok once in awhile.

my son keegan has his first ever christmas show tonight. he's 3 years old, and he goes to preschool 2 hours a day, 3 days per week. so the preschool does a christmas show and keegan sings a song in it. so cute.

keegan is also "pooping in the potty" as we like to call it at the riefer household. and boy is that good fucking news.

----
friday 12/19/08
facebook is amazing.

keegan's christmas show was awesome. he was so clueless. he didn't pick his nose. he sang his little heart out. priceless.

just counting the minutes until christmas vacation.. 11 days off... oh yeah.

debating whether to kick tonight or not. i'm really exhausted. but sometimes kicking can energize.

----
Monday 12/22/08

pretty good weekend overall. friday night, i was too tired to kick, but had a nice time just hanging with the wifey and kids etc.

saturday, had a session working on the 20 staples some more. they're all improving, so that's cool.

sunday, kicked with drew. he's getting better at a fast pace, you can tell he's been putting the time in. he takes coaching well too. i played well - last time I played with him, and when I played with Caleb recently, I really kind of sucked. which was weird because I'd just recently been posting that my shred was great.. good string length, good difficulty etc. And then I sucked 2 sessions in a row out of nowhere. Anyhow, back to normal now, and I shredded really well. long strings jammed with good links (good for me at least). low bops, decent both sidedness. the work I've been doing on the 20 staples helps my game already.

then, went and got case of beer. they had a mix case of 24 different beers. i couldn't pass it up. It has everything you can imagine in the case. my wife and I are writing beer reviews for each beer in the case so that we will have gained sometihng (besides calories) from drinking this case.

I'm ready to get back onto major health kick again shortly. holidays have derailed some of my progress. I won't get on the scale right now, but I'm sure I'm up 5-10 pounds. and just feeling kind of pudgy. wife is a little soft right now too. so we're going to do the next year's worth of our plan together this time. individual goals and plans, but in a friendly contest with each other. I'll kick her butt I think. but in the end we'll both be healthier.

45 days without smoking

3 day work week this week. basically a waste. then 11 days off. plan to play a lot of footbag, play some hoops, take the kids to indoor pool, go to longwood gardens, go to the 'please touch' museum in Philly, see a bunch of friends, sleep too much, drink too much, and get ready to get really skinny immediately after the 11 days is over.

---
Tuesday 12/23/08

God I'm bored. I'm always bored at this job, but it's way worse than usual because our industry basically shuts down for Christmas. So there's NOTHING to do really. And my momentary fascination with facebook seems to be over. And I've surfed to the end of the internet and back already. Ho hum. The agony of awaiting our year end bonus is rough right now too. For me, this year, the bonus makes the difference between continuing to do fine, and launching the next phase of economic lifetime growth. If bonus is one amount, ehhhhhhh. If it's a bit more, my strategic plan for 2009 and beyond is far different (yes... I do an annual strategic plan for our finances and personal goals). So yeah, we'll see.

btw, I got the greatest ever case of beer the other day. (edit: ha ha, I didn't realize I told you about this already... oh well, this is a better description of the wonderous case of beer) Seriously, it's unbeatable. Basically, the owner of my local beer store put together a case of 24 different good beers. I don't think it's even really legal for him to have done it, but there was no one else in the store, so he hooked me up quietly. There are so many excellent beers that I already love in this case, and all the rest are beers that I've wanted to try. Very exciting. It would take me years to try that many beers (in PA, you can only buy full cases.. cannot buy single beers or six packs like in other areas). So, to take full advantage, we have been writing beer reviews each time we open a new beer. This way, we'll be able to determine which ones we might want to buy again in the future. So far, there's Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and a outmeal stout (can't remember name right now) that we both really loved. Very cool.

Really looking forward to the next wave of our health kick.

Also, really looking forward to the barn project. As I've said before, if you let your mind chew on a difficult topic for awhile, it magically figures things out. So the plan is getting really good now. Also, I'm a big believer that more than 50% of the effort of any well done job is the preparation that is done before the job even starts. Over my vacation, I'll be doing a lot of planning (materials planning, outline of steps, approximation of time expenditure etc.).

kicked last night. worthless session. super super cold in the barn, very tired and ready for vacation. but i got out there and played so that's good.

off at 2 p.m. today.. no work for 11 days thereafter. longest vacation in about 5 years or so.

--
edit, oh yeah, I forgot.. here are my new years resolutions. I purposely have tried to set goals this year that I think are really easily attainable. It's not worth setting overly lofty goals that I'll never even attempt. So here they are:

fitness/health
- continue/recommit to no alcohol on weekdays thing
- cut out the "salty snack" from lunch. otherwise, continue eating as I have for last year.
- at a minimum, average 25 pushups, 50 crunches per day.
- increase footbag session time from 35 minutes to 40 minutes.
- continue to play footbag 3-4 times per week.
- when warm weather returns, begin using basketball as cool down activity for each footbag session.
- with all of these goals, we're hoping to be 195 pounds by end of 2009.
-edit: continue to not smoke (currently on day 47!)

home
- write barn renovation plan
- lock down barn renovation costs, itemized list
- restructure first floor of barn, have new concrete floor and foundation poured.
- finish shred space and workshop as much as possible to allow for winter exercise next year.
- installing vinyl siding will have to wait until 2010.

career
- hold onto your job, wait out the economy
