I like this thread :D I can understand both points of view. They have their advantages and disadvantages. It just comes to experiencing them personally so you can actually create the priorities in your life. Like I said earlier, I went through being blind and it scared the shit out of me not being to hear music again. You can always find a sucker to put you in the position to play music, be it guitar or drums. I was also thinking today you could shred without being able to see. I think most footbaggers have thought of playing footbag with your eyes closed. It's sooo legit. I'm confident in my decision of being blind

EDIT:

$25,000

Ok I have one - You are an average looking person. An incredibly good looking person of the opposite (or same) gender falls in love with you. It turns out that they're blind. Is this fail, or win?

Not sure how something like that could just "turn up" down the line, but regardless, that's a solid win in my books.

Agree, win all the way.

And I'd take the $25,000.

Deaf: I'd much rather be able to see and take in life that way

Rocket balls: self-explanatory

$25,000: you can just practice to get the moves

Win: could be considered a moral fail, but if it works out fine, then you're good

It's immoral to have a relationship with someone who's blind AND attractive? It's win all the way.

Yeah I wasn't thinking of it those terms. I was more thinking, if you can only pull hot girls who are blind, it's an insult about your looks, but if you can pull hot girls who are blind, it's a compliment to your personality. Obviously it's win to have a hot girlfriend either way :P

blind, not only can you listen to music and hear the world that you are in and wont have to live your life inside your head but from a survival standpoint when it comes down to it all you need is your hearing...if i can hear you coming from hundreds of feet away than that is all you really need. the down fall is playing footbag would be near impossible unless you were the daredevil of course

This is one we talked a lot about at NYJ three years ago I think.

Would you rather:

Have two ears on your head and another ear (fully functional) where your genitalia normally is

OR

Genitalia plus two extra genitalia (fully functional) where your ears normally are.

vision is much more important for survival and our normal way of life.

getting jobs
transportation
more options for sports
more types of entertainment

i can only see someone logically choosing blind if their entire life revolved around music.

being able to hear the oceans waves and not actually see it would make me very depressed.

That is entirely debatable.
Considering being congenitally blind or deaf, since it wasnt stated in the topic, being congentially deaf you would be at a serious disadvantage in developing the concept of language. This may be hard to understand, but of course sign makes sense to speaking folk because they can communicate through language, which ever language that may be. And think about how most people think and all of the inner dialogue going on. Without being constantly exposed to language (even pre-birth) your development is seriously at risk here.
And even without being congenitally deaf, think about how much more you can hear than you can see. Shut your eyes and you are still quite functional.
I think becoming blind or deaf would be a major drag, but would be nothing compared to being born that way (although Im in conflict here as well. Would it be easier to not see never knowing what seeing is?). Its easy to imagine not seeing or not hearing, but its practically impossible to truly imageine Never having seen or Never having heard anything.
I could talk about this for quite a while, lol.
Edit: Being blind definitely affects your independence, but I think being deaf is much more of a social detriment than most others would think.

Deaf

Vision is wayy too important to not have, and it is so much more conducive to daily life (as mentioned above^^)

ALSO  Beethoven was deaf... you can still experience music through vibrations you can feel (though clearly limited)

Vision, on the other hand, is impossible to experience even remotely through any other sense

Try not to diminish how extraordinary Beethoven was  I'm not deaf and I could never do what he did.

i wouldn't want to ruin the magic of family matters. I would get sick of it after a week non stop. So I'm going for the shake-weight.

point was --> he obviously was able to perceive sound through vibrations he felt, which is why he was able to appreciate/compose music. there's no arguing he genius, was just citing an example.

there is at least some crossover between auditory and cutaneous senses ("feeling" vibrations-cutaneous- CAN be a crossover from auditory stimuli, hence why Beethoven was able to understand music)
vision, though, can not even be compared to any other sense and there is NO crossover between vision and another sense (i.e. you can't experience even a distorted sense of vision through taste, touch, sound, or smell, whereas you can (to some extent) through sound & touch)

very long-winded, but that's what I meant. But then again, of course I have no idea what is truly is like to be blind/how they perceive the world. It has always fascinated me to think of this; if you have never experienced vision, how do you "see" (sense) the world. It's an amazing concept
