footbag.org is down

Post by webmaster »

Folks,

I swear this happens every year when I go to Worlds -- but this year it seems even worse. I'm on my way home from Montreal, and landed in Atlanta for an hour, and discovered that footbag.org is completely dead. I went and looked (via ssh) and the hard drive seems to have had a failure. I did a file system check and rebuilt the drive (it's supposed to be a journalling filesystem but maybe Linux has bugs in that stuff) and it's completely hosed.

The good news is that I have backups (of course -- I wouldn't be a good webmaster if I didn't) as of 8:24am this morning so once I do get it back up, I don't believe any data will be lost. However, it could take 24 hours to restore it because if the hard drive is really hosed and not reformattable then I'll have to go buy a new one (argh).

I hate my life. :-( I haven't slept at all and now I have to stay up all night restoring the site.

Anyway -- very important point -- my e-mail is obviously also down. So please don't e-mail me at footbag.org until it comes back up (in fact, all people whose addresses end in @footbag.org or @worldfootbag.com or other domains I host will be held until the site comes back up). Instead, if you need to reach me personally, please write my Google account at [email protected]

Thanks.

I am sorry to hear what happened. But on an off note, thank you for your dedication towards your site. Many others (including me) would have said "oh well I'll rebuild it later". However you are going to stay up all night restoring it. YOU DA MAN!!!

Thanks again.

p.s. Good luck. I wish you smooth sailing through those pesky htmls (if that is what you use). :D

Back Up!

Post by Allan »

Okay, so we're back up and running. Thank god Steve keeps good backups, as it was a nasty crash.

We'd like to ask that people refrain from uploading any media to the gallery for a day or two until we stabilize everything and make sure it's good to go.

Thanks for fixing it Steve and thanks to everyone for your patience.

No problem. I was able to restore from a 5am backup yesterday, which assuming that the problem started at around 8am (all Pacific times) then I'm pretty sure we didn't lose anything. However, if you uploaded any vids/photos or posted to the forum yesterday you should make sure it's still there and let me know if not. I actually have backups for my backups, so some stuff may be recoverable still.
