Thorpe beats Phelps in 200m.
Tomorrow:
US women's soccer to take on AUS women. Again we will meet Jeremy. . . for the first time . . . for the last time. Jeremy vs. Jeremy in a battle of true olympians . . .

what would i rather have 10 mill or the respect of the world?
10 million because being the best in the world at some spotr doesnt make you respected by anyone. at the end of the day they are just games. i dont see why it is so many of these peoples ultimate life goal just to win a gold medal. they dedicate there entire life to it. i would imagine that once they win the gold medal they feel kinda empty, like "wow im the best in the world at this sport or event, hmm now what am i going to do with my life?"
but thats just my opinion, i think about that when i hear how these atheletes that spend 10 hours a day training. it seems like they waste there lifes. but i do enjoy watching the olympics alot.

Lets remember that you have over ten times the population to choose from than we do, and are a richer country as well - so I'm claiming a win if the US don't get at least 10 times as many gold medals as Australia

an olympic gold medal. there are more 10 millionaires in the world than olympic gold medalists. i mean, money just gets given away, check the super 7 jackpot every friday, but i don't see them giving away olympic medals nearly as often.

Do you have any goals in life? Being the best, being a champion is a goal that a lot of people have. They strive for it. It's their achievement of a lifetime. I'd rather accomplish something that had an amazing feel when it happened and something that I could be proud of for the rest of my life than get lucky and win some money in the lottery.

EDIT: Andrew's got some awesome points. They spend 10 hours a day training because they love what they're doing and enjoy every moment of it. How's it a waste when you're doing something/working for something that you enjoy.

Men's 100m Freestyle final tonight (with TWO South Africans in the final). It looks like a showdown between Roland Schoeman and Pieter van den Hoogenband, although Hoogie has to be the favourite. Ryk Neethling and Ian Thorpe could also upset, but they have really bad lane placings.

No Americans in the final!

Damn, the "Flying Dutchman" (van den Hoogenband) won the 100m freestyle, with Roland Schoeman just 0.06s behind the world record holder. Atleast its another silver to South Africa. Ryk Neethling did OK, coming 4th behind Thorpe.

Hopefully Schoeman can have another good showing in the 50m freestyle. His reaction time was again the fastest, which should set him up to atleast medal in the 50m freestyle.

sorry to bring up this played out topic again but if Finland wants to make it to the finals in an event, get footbag in. Lord knows the US has no chance of convincing any officials of its worthieness, but you Europeans claim to be able to swarm the masses. The true test of European power, put footbag at a world level.

hahaha sorry just got done watching some corny action thriller.

PS- gymnastics this year was awsome. Probably the only sport as technichanly difficult as footbag, maybe diving too. Maybe I don't have a well trained eye but it seems like the gymnastics haven't been progressing much over the years. WR constantly fall in the pool and on the track but I don't see any ground breaking moves in gymnastics? Maybe they go conservative in team competition?

last night I came home after going out for a beer and turned on the telly. I watched a soccer game between Iraq and Morrocco...yawn. Seriously, I never thought I'd see a game where I could care less about the outcome. Pretty shitty game as well, nil all when I hit the sack (bed not shred)... Olympic soccer, mmm, gets in the way of club football and therefore must be banned! Sir Alex was pissed at not having Ronaldo or his new Argentinian defender Hienze for the opening game against Chelsea and I don't blame him. His squad was severly depleted without these 2 running off to play in a meaningless tournament. Olympic soccer means fuck all in truth...

In the end, Schoeman could only manage a bronze. But still, major props to him, coming away with a gold, silver and bronze (he is now the South African that won the most medals at a single Olympics, ever). So yeah.

Next up : Jacques Freitag in the highjump. He should medal, but he is struggling with an ankle injury on his takeoff leg... Hope he does well.

Carly Patterson rocks. I watched her compete last night. I think shes like the second women from the US to win the all around. I think, or maybe it just hasnt happend for like 20 years. Its one of them.
