I was expecting some screams of astonishment of my country. Of Lithuania's basketball. The guys go through the tournament without a loss, today completely beating China and successfully punching the shit out of USA the other day. Dude, we're european basketball champions. Gold is reserved

Additionally, we have one gold medal in disk throwing and silver in women's 7fight (don't know the english name).

I think these 3 (yes, gold in basketball

) medals are a higher achievement than some of the larger countries'. Go us!

hey swampy, i was talking to my grandfather the other day about lithuania beating the US. he doesn't speak much english, but he understood when i said lithuania, basketbal, and gold in the same sentence, hehe.

Lithuania is definitely one of the strongest teams in the tournament, but I wouldn`t say gold is definite. Argentina or the US could give you guys a hard time. If lithuania wins gold, I wont be surprised at all, but I wouldn`t say its definite.

Incidentally we lost. Noone excepted it from Italy. In fact, everyone expected GOLD only. And right at the moment I'm writing, Lithuania fights USA for BRONZE.

What is interesting, we never went to the final match in 3 or 4 Olympics consequently. We always lost in the semi-finals. They call it "damned semi-finals" here

.

Many enthuziastic basketball fans have cried in here. Not me though, I wasn't that much into this sport, but as any other lithuanian I enjoy watching the games and keep my thumbs for the team

. They call basketball a religion here!

One might doubt that it's basketball finals. Italy and Argentina. One might think it's a soccer game.

i heard making the medals for everone in every compitions cost a total of 400,000. and thats just for the metal. to engrave them cost more.

Holy shit, thats alot! Just think of all the good that cold have came to the world if wes spent all of the money all the countrys spend for the O. Think of all the people we could have helped....

Well the other teams have pros as well. And most of the athletes in other sports in Olympics are also professionals so why should basket ball players be amateurs?

Crappy Olympics for the Finns, by the way. Two silvers so far, on skeet and roman-greek (sp?) wrestling.

Exactly!! And because it's slightly relevant although completely off topic but I try to take every opportunity to say this - one day of the US Military budget could make sure the entire world has enough food and clean water for 6 months!!!!!!!!!!!! But of course the US government would rather spend the money on killing people or developing better ways of killing people than on saving people...

Lightning you do realize that other countries use pros as well right? Maybe not a pro stacked team, but Arroyo from Puerto Rico and Ginobili from Argentina are some examples. They US players aren't playing like pros now, that's for sure.

Oh course I know that! I not stupid thinking the us is speacial or something. Also, I know the world use pros in many other sports.

I was just saying, that I don't like how the world use pros. Like in hockey. The whole team made out of NHL players. The world use NHL or "pro" player if they have any. I think they should not accept "pro" players to compete. It gose agaisn't the foundatin of it.

But it doesn't matter what I think, so I should just shut up

but these are the OLYMPICS! Not some amateur competition! It's supposed to be a show of the greatest athletes on the planet! And nearly all of the World's best athletes aare pros in their respective fields... I'm not sure an "amateur Olympics" would garner that much attention.

On a slightly different subject, I always thought they should have some events with NO drugs-testing.. Morally and ethicly very wrong.. but I'm sure the results could make the crowds go crazy.. Maybe some underground olympics with teams of athletes and doctors (a bit like in cycling actually).

They used to have a rule that only amateur competitors were allowed to compete. The rule was removed in 1992 I think, simply because there's not that many athletes that are not professionals, they have to live somehow. Especially team sports, how many players would you get in hockey or soccer if you weren't allowed to be in a team that payes for you to play..

Exactly. This is a professional event. A huge one that is only once every 4 years. Most of the athletes are professionals. The soccer teams are chalk full of professional players. It's not like they all play in one country though because soccer is more spread out and hasn't caught on much in USA. The best athletes in the world are in this event and they're mostly professionals in their respected sports.
