They actulaly aren't used to treat pain. They are used to prevent future wearing of the joints. They help the joints become more flexible and lubricated, relieving stress on them.
Actually, my father had them suggested by his doctor as a long term pain reliever. And they do lessen everyday joint ...

OK i actually read the article and i see what thier main point is. Stretching can be detrimental to people who don't have the muscle to support the now looser joints so injury can occur. I dont buy anything that says stretching is bad in any way. I rock climb 3 days a week and not stretching beforehand makes a huge difference in how quickly i get tired, how easy it is to transition from one hold to another, and keeps me from getting muscle cramps if i have to hold myself in a funny ...

I guess it's different for everyone, i smoke a bowl almost once a day and i hold a good job, have a wife, live in a nice big house, work out regularly, etc
