I think we (entirety of the footbag community) should all encourage females to shred. I think that the best way to do that is to take the female members that we have already and get them to promote it.

Or get CK and Ambercrombie & Fitch looking guys to promote it.

One or the other.

Some thoughts...
-------------------------
Is it sexist to host a site for representing women's freestyle?

Is it not sexist that almost every footbag video and website does not represent a single female shredder? In fact, so seldomly that most of you didn't even know any women existed in this sport until you ran into Shreditas or another girl voicing her opinions on this forum...or if you were lucky enough to attend a tournament that *might* have had a woman competitor. Is it not sexist that women open brackets are not judged as well, with as qualified judges, or taken as seriously as men's open bracket?...or even men's intermediate bracket for that matter!

Are you feeling under-represented or discriminated against as a male in this sport? Sexually objectified perhaps?

Shreditas.com is to promote, not to discriminate. Sorry if you have been personally afflicted by the women shredders that you have witnessed on Shreditas.com...that was not its intention.

Shreditas does not put down any demographics.

It's funny that running this site has made me have to come off as some women's rights activist type. I'm just trying to promote women's freestyle so it doesn't dissappear and so that the level of play is intensified. I'm not really into activism, so I probably wont defend anymore than this.

It's interesting to hear what people think though. I think there are some other similar threads on this forum.

Ok, staying on topic so that the thread does not get locked - if you want to discuss this - start your own topic about it.

I think you've done an amazing job Jane (and all the other shreditas who have worked to promote woman's footbag). When I started playing I knew of maybe 5 female players. Now there's maybe 10 times that. Just waiting for some to start playing in Melbourne...

When I first started playing I knew of Carol W. But I had no idea how unbalanced the sport was/is.

I think that Shreditas.com is one of the best things to happen to this sport since Kenny Shults!

Keep it up Jane.

On the bad news side, though. We had a shredita here in Queensland (also named Caroline), but to my knowlege, she doesn't kick anymore. She was just starting to learn pickups and was working on legovers, when she just vanished! Last I heard, she's got some pretty serious work demands, so she obviously doesn't see footbag as a priority in her life.
It's a shame.

yeah, I completely agree with everything Jane said.
I am really really new at this, but most of the reason that I didn't get as involved sooner (along with the fact that school and everything was hectic) was because girls were not represented very well, and often (it seemed to me) discriminated against in this sport. and I was very repelled by that.
I mean, I did not necessarily want to devote my time to a sport where, if I got good enough, I would only hear "she's really good for a girl". and I have heard that A LOT. even from my boyfriend, who I would say is pretty good with girls playing footbag (teaches a group twice a week, and is really pro footbag for everyone) so I don't know if it is a mentality that has just become accepted here, but saying stuff like that is sexist, and I am sure has made more girls than me reluctant to join the sport.

but that's all I have to say about that for now. just be careful about what you say sometimes, and remember:
when you are the minority, it is really hard to stay involved with something unless you have a community in which you can be specifically that minority (that is what shreditas is good for...amoung other things of course). I am saying that it would be really hard for girls to be footbaggers when they have to face a majority of males in the sport, unless they have a place to improve without worrying about that. so no, the shreditas website is not sexist, just essential to making everyone feel comfortable with the wonderful sport of footbag!! anyways, have a good day. oh, and PS, it's my teddy bear.

i see no reason why anyone would feel shreditas.com is sexist, thats such a ignorant view, although I dont think its a view that many people in the community hold, so we shouldn't waste so many posts trying to counter it because I really dont think its that big of an issue, most of the people I talk to are really open to all shredders especially those of the female persuasion :P

ps canadian girl, where in canadia are you?
